    Apple Patents DualShock-Style Game Controller

With a revenue of over a 100 billion, legions of adoring fans and an iOS empire that dominates the mobile market, Apple isn't a company anyone wants to go up against. That's why Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo might be eyeing a recently published patent with worry.

Filed in March and published today, the patent GR has discovered lists various inputs and interactions between iPhones, iPods and Apple TVs, including FIG. 6, which "is a schematic of a video game controller for the standalone media player of FIG. 4 or a video game system".

FIG. 4 is an Apple TV, which could easily become a video games console with an upgrade, and technically already can play iOS games over airplay. Currently, core gamers don't take the platform too seriously due to the lack of buttons that severely limits gameplay.

The controller is also shown to be able to connect to an iPhone/iPod Touch and presumably will be able to connect to an iPad if it ever becomes real. Connection is shown to be wireless, using Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and NFC tags, rather than the cable depicted.

If the controller does become a reality, it'll likely have a few design tweaks to stop it looking identical to the DualShock, but any type of physical controller from the industry behemoth would send ripples through the gaming world.

Have you guys ever seen a patent before? It's not a design patent, in fact if you read the actual patent you can see what it is that was actually patented. The "drawings" in patents are always hilariously bad, but that's only because their only purpose is to get the point across as simply as possible, so that it can't be understood multiple ways. They just drew a "generic controller" which looks like a dual shock design because everyone who sees that image will know it is a video game controller. If apple does come out with their own gamepad, I can guarantee you it will look nothing like a dual shock, that is way too far away from Apple's design standards.
Hey. Hey. Look. Look at me. I'm playing video games.

You used the same argument in your "Android's totally not a rip-off of the iPhone, they drew pictures in 2006." post...how ironic.

    Agreed.

The end-product won't end up looking like a dead-ringer for a DualShock. I suspect that's just to provide a generic and easily-recognised depiction of a modern gamepad for the purpose of registering the patent. At least four other manufacturers use a similar format. Besides, it's...um...got one more button...ahem. :cough: rip-off :hack:

What I'm interested in is what Apple has up its sleeves for a home entertainment console. Android's got one now in the Ouya, so it makes sense plans are also underway at Cupertino.

And besides the xbox controller is apparently better suited for your hands to play games so if anything microsoft should be worried about apple copying their controller not sony
