Finally got a chance to play the demo to ascertain whether or not I'll buy the game. I'm big on first impressions and only played it for 30 mins which is enough to get a feel for the game engine.

The character creation system is pretty impressive. The custom heads don't look like the munters you find in Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2 or Skyrim and there's a great deal of variety in stature, physique and facial features. I quickly created a 7ft tall Viking warrior and his 6'9" mage pawn brother, which is a nice touch for roleplaying. I could easily get lost in character creation for hours.

The character movement and combat is a lot faster and less clunky than depicted in the videos. It's not as clean and crisp as Demon's / Dark Souls, feeling more like Dragon Age II's frantic hacking and slashing than DS's defense-oriented battle tactics. There are shades of DS in there, but it's more of an ARPG combat system.

The AI worked and behaved pretty well and looked nothing like the stupid, stiff mannequins in the gameplay vids. I was particularly taken by the grabs friendlies made on foes to let you make a quick-time kill. Pawn assists were also pretty cool.

The camera could use some work - when there's a lot of on-screen action it can be difficult to figure out where the next foe is on the battlefield.

Other than the minor camera criticism, it looks like a solid game and it'll be easy to adapt to any shortcomings. Overall, my impression is much more positive after playing the demo than watching the videos.

I'm sure the full game will be even more impressive... not enough to sucker me at full retail price, but enough to warrant a purchase in the near future.

Btw, I hate that rotten sorry scoundrel of a pawn of Chambers. >:F used him once.. he ran and jumped off a cliff into the water and was taken by the Brine >:F >:F >:F. I had to go with only my pawns from then on.
*didn't help he jumped cause I grabbed him and kicked into the water, but not the point of the story*

Glad you decided to give it a whirl, and everything you just said I agree with

You can turn off some of the stuff that pops up on your HUD, mainly the stuff that your pawns are saying during the battle.

It be alright Chambers, least he returned safely to the Rift after that .

Nice post Ant, pretty much point on. Combat does remind me a bit of a more refined fighting like DS but I haven't played DAII to know how it seems with it. I'll ask Davey on that one.

Glad to see everyone loving it and no one that particularly hates it. Just doesn't want to spend big bucks on it. I'd gladly pay more honestly

liking it so far about 4 hours in, one death from a bunch of bandits that kept appearing out of nowhere, still getting a feel for the combat since its a little different from pretty much anything else ive played, pawns can be a bit dumb at times by going after a rabbit while im getting ganked by 3 wolves but they are overall fairly useful, cant believe how much stuff there is to pick up, keep dumping tons of stuff into the storage for use later, dont want to sell something i might need later on

There are small conveniences they could have done to make this game better...its still a fun game, but it can get annoying walking everywhere....Overall I don't think it is as good as the DAs, SkyGim or Kingdoms of Amalur.

I would give this game a 7/10 overall

agreed about the lack of a fast travel system but its good that there are shortcuts out of areas back towards the town, also would appreciate the inclusion of a lock on button since combat can get hectic when involving several smaller creatures like wolves

Closest thing to fast travel are Portcrystals and Ferrystones you get in Gran Soren. There is a portcrystal that is near the Pawn's Guild and in the center a free Ferrystone. Using a Ferrrystone will transport you back to the portcrystal. One story quest leads you to a tower and you get a new Portcrystal that you can set where ever else except down in a dungeon. Use a Ferrystone and you can choose which one you want to go to .

Definitely needs a normal fast travel option but for this game and set up it's relaly nice and epic . Some normal caravan transportation or soemthing between towns be cool at the very least.

How is the game being rated by review sites? I'm interested to know if the sites are getting back on the Capcom band wagon.

As an aside I checked the guide and it said 2 magical things to me: Online Trophies: NO! Online Pass: NO!

I'm pretty impressed with the game. I like the item customization... it's simple but effective. I think the item menu could you use a tune-up. It's nice to have 3 pack mules for all of the loot you come across. It's nice that some of the fights are actually challenging... I've probably died more in this game already than in the entirety of Reckoning... and not much more in Skyrim.

My complaints are the lack of a normal fast travel. I like to explore everything, but sometimes I just want to hop somewhere and back. Also, I've failed a couple of initial side missions because they could no longer be completed, and no 'story' reason was given. Most of the side missions are collect or kill this... repetitive, but whatever. The escort missions force you to explore, but I did one to the Shadow Fort last night which was very far from anywhere the game has taken me, and it turned night halfway there. I made it to a Rest Area safely. It was a fun challenge. The structure and range of the side missions could probably be tweaked to be more regional on the map.

I think it has the fun combat of Reckoning, a little of the challenge in Souls, and the open world feel to Skyrim. Rough around the edges, but I'm still impressed with it.

Finally, sometimes the pawns just talk way too much and over each other. Annoying.

I know that you can adjust how much your pawns talk, not sure about hired pawns.

I know. I've already told her to talk less often, but she still won't shut up. I wouldn't mind it as much while we're just travelling but it is annoying in the middle of combat. She doesn't need to tell me goblins hate fire every 10 seconds.

They could have even given us a horse to ride to make the trips faster....nothing more irritating than finishing a dungeon and having to hoof it another 5-10 mins to get back to town while you have limited health and resources and are Heavy from all your looting

You can summon a generic pawn and it counts for this. The byond rift is for any pawn from the rift lol.

Thus why this game will get some love. Although it would be fun to snag some pawns from you guys once I get the game.

Overall a good game, but has some serious issues such as performance issue, mediocre storyline, poorly detailed character models, and lack of fast travel means. Just wrote my review on this forum yesterday: Dragon's Dogma Review (PS3) | Devil May Cry Forums

My own personal checklist for Dragon's Dogma

    - Stock up on cheap Ferrystones from Fournival (for fast travel): Check
    - Ogres made easy: Check
    - Cyclops made easy: Check
    - Golems made easy: Check
    - Chimeras made easy: Check
.... (You got to love the adaptive party AI, the more knowledge the pawns have, the more efficiently they work as a team.)
    - Cockatrice made easy: Pending...

Cockatrice is such a terrifying monster. Hard to grab on, spews a petrifying attack that cannot be cured by magick like High Halidom but only by potions, and only a few potion types at that (Panacea and Softeners). Keeps jumping up and down, draining your stamina fast, and flies everywhere. Not a good day for turkey, but my pawns will learn... And I will bring much more Softeners this time. Petrification really sucks, I must tell you, it slows you down for a period of time increasingly until you are fully stoned and then one hit from Cockatrice splinters you into pieces and death. ^^ Have fun!

I agree with your summary... But you don't even mention the Pawn system in the pros
