File-sharing becomes a recognized religion in Sweden - Boing Boing
Sweden has given official religious status to Church of Kopimism, a faith and philosophy based on file-sharing. The faith's foundational document, ""POwr, broccoli and Kopimi," is available as a .torrent file indexed on The Pirate Bay (natch). It exhorts followers to undertake 100 tasks to attain #g_d (a hashtagged, all-lower-case version of the observant Jewish tradition of writing God as "G_d").
As faith strictures go, these ones are actually pretty good. On the other hand, I'm not much of a believer in Gods, G_d or #g_d, so perhaps this isn't for me.001. Obtain the Internet.

Legally speaking its not that difficult to get anything declared a religion.
Its funny but stuff like this is where I always point to legal and philosophical differences being important. This is a classic example of abusing the legal definition of something for some tax loopholes (or for the lulz).
In the legal community what your core beliefs are is ultimately irrelevant, what your religion needs is some well-defined, organized structure. Its why, to the legal community, something like Atheism or Transcendentalism isn't a religion. This most certainly has all the tenants necessary to fit the legal bill though.
Some of this is because the legal community views religion as an organization, not a personal expression.
Philosophically its almost the polar opposite, the existence of your religious structure isn't of particular importance. What is important is the nature of your core beliefs and principles. If whatever your viewpoint is needs to follow a few simple concepts and answer a few key questions, so long as it does it is a religion.
This is why, in a philosophical sense, Atheism and Transcendentalism all of a sudden become a religion. It meets the criteria, ergo its a religious belief. Its because philosophy considers religion a personal expression. If you are say Catholic, its not important that the "church" exists, but rather the core tenants you believe.

Sweden got it right with their file sharing laws (or lack thereof). Sure it's weird to start a RELIGION over it, but have you read some other Religious doctrines lately?........ it's not that much crazier, maybe even less crazy. I'm looking at you, Lord Xenu.
