The Video Game History Quirks Corner

I'm starting a new thing here. I (as most people here) love video games, and I love them so much I research history about it too. That may sound lame, but all of the small coincidences and choices really did make a huge difference. There is so much to this, that it is actually kind of incredible. I'll be making these small... I guess "articles" about certain parts. Any feedback and ideas for next topic would be very appreciated. I'm starting out by writing one and will write more as we go.

I was born 83, I still have memories of the Atari and the 64 . I remember the way the consoles looked more than the games, its crazy the way gaming has went, mobile phones are like super computers compared to those oldies nice trip down memory lane mate .

Good read Gyro, great idea to start that. I remember playing Atari when I was little, but we used cassettes not cartridges. Games like River Raid or Spy vs Spy, Bruce Lee. Or that game that u play chess but when 2 enemies clash, there's an actual fight, I don't remember the name of that game. Reputation for this thread dude

Don't know how often I will update this... I was thinking twice a month or something. And I could do a mini-article every once in a while when I feel like it. This will just be a fun little sidegag for when I'm not writing a guide or working for GDT I suppose.

Nice idea, gyro! I enjoyed the Atari history lesson. I had no idea how much they had gone through. If history tells us anything about the future it seems like they might try to make another bounce back. I've never played the Atari, but I did see one that my dad had packed away in the attic when I was growing up.

I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread, great idea Gyro.

As someone who was born in '73, I remember a time before video games. Atari was the first console I ever owned. I remember playing Moon Patrol and Defender all the time. I also remember the controller and how cheaply made it was. Literally just a stick and a button, I must have broke 20 of those things.

Well, this is free . It's a great book, but it's mostly just about numbers and sales, but it does give a nice perspective of things.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback guys.
By the way if you have something you'll like me to cover then just tell me. I'm looking for good subjects (but don't worry, I have enough to go on for a little while).

Trip down to memory lane. I played the Amiga Commodore and Atari Lynx myself ( remember some of the games from the Lynx really well), so it was really nice to read what happened with them.

History was my fav subject in school and it still is, I have not read much into the video game history, so this should be interesting!

A good read I must say!

That was interesting to read and I didn't even grow up with Atari. Sad to see a company try so hard and keep getting slapped down. They did pave a few ways though and those involved should know that impact. Great idea gyro!

Mini-article: "The Tragic Tale of Spore" is done and uploaded (on release too ).

This one hits a bit home with me, since I was incredibly hyped on Spore and my 12 year old mind just cracked over.... two depressing tales out of two... good thing the next one is about Kirby.

Great article. Oh man the Atari 2600, what a good time to be a kid. I will keep reading if you keep it up. Good job.

This is pretty good Gyro! I remember really wanting Spore for ages ever since it was announced in 2005, and once I eventually got to play it round a friends house, just the sheer disappointment I had.

Keep this up Gyro, i always like to learn a bit more about gaming's glorious history. Seems apt as we near another era of gaming so very soon. ( Wii U doesn't count ).

Another interesting article Gyro. I remember hearing about Spore and getting excited. I didn't have the computer for it but it was cool to see PC games go in that creative direction. Sad to see such great ideas get snuffed out by EA and it's profit-focus. I would leave Maxis too.....

Cool article, Gyro. I've never heard of Spore as I wasn't gaming at that time, but the original concept sounds cool. Too bad it was a flop due to EA.
