My maternal grandfather was in the Royal Air Force in England as an armaments loader for the bombers attacking Germany. His worst injury was a broken ankle as a result of a bomb rolling off a trolley onto his foot during a fight with a fellow soldier. He died at a ripe old age in Australia after migrating here after the war.
My paternal grandfather fought for the Australian Army in North Africa. He lost all of his mates when a bomb struck an anti-aircraft emplacement. Being the sole survivor haunted him for the rest of his days and he died an alcoholic in his fifties.
Their fathers, brothers, uncles and etc along with all of my grandmothers' male relatives fought in either WWII or WWI for England or Australia. There was no getting around it in those dark days - it was better to die in battle than be called a coward. Unfortunately their history is lost to me.
My father was a year too old for the Vietnam War draft in the late 1960's. His younger brother fled to Canada to dodge the draft and has lived there ever since.
My sister's ex-boyfriend is one of only 32 Australian soldiers to have died in Afghanistan, leaving behind a wife and two young kids. RIP Grant.
