Vita Won't Support Flash, but HTML 5 is supported

Gamasutra - News - Report: PlayStation Vita Browser Supports HTML5, But Not Flash

Sony's upcoming PlayStation Vita will not support Adobe's Flash platform in its web browser...at least, not at launch.

According to an article published in this week's issue of Weekly Famitsu in Japan, the Vita's web browser will support cookies, JavaScript 1.7, and part of the HTML5 standard when it launches in Japan next month.

While Flash will not be a part of the launch, the magazine's editors imply that there's a chance support will come in future firmware updates, according to a translation.

Sony's previous portable, the PSP, also launched without Flash support. A firmware update nearly a year-and-a-half post-launch added basic support: however, implementation was based on version 6 of the platform, initially released in 2002, making the PSP version five generations behind the desktop client. As a result, some Flash content can not be utilized on the system.

Support for Adobe's now 15-year-old platform has fallen by the wayside in recent years. Most famously, Apple's iOS-compatible devices do not run Flash content in their native browsers, with late former CEO Steve Jobs blaming its occlusion on "technology issues."

Additionally, Microsoft announced that a future version of its Internet Explorer browser will drop support for all plug-ins, including Flash.

Flash continues to be the dominant platform for games on Facebook. However, the company recently launched its first round of HTML5-based games.

And this would be why I don't use iOS devices or Internet Explorer.
Oh well, not like I'll be using my Vita for web browsing. That's what my Nexus S and pc are for.

In this case its not nearly as big a deal to me as it is with the iPhone, since I won't be using the VITa to browse the web.

I find it funny that they put "technology issues" in quotes though, because lets be honest... Jobs didn't include Flash in iOS because he didn't want people playing free games online, he wanted them buying them from the App Store.

Sites like Kongregate could have sucked off alot of money from Apple.
Gauss's Piracy Uncertainty Principle: When you pirate a game, that act inherently changes the results of what is to come after your pirating. You can't make any statement with any certainty regarding what would have happened had you not pirated the game.

    Gauss's Rating Rationale:
0-1: A game whose very existence is abhorrent to all things creative and intelligent.
2-4: A just plain bad game.
5-6: A game that has alot of mistakes, but is atleast playable and has some enjoyable sections. Good for a rent.
7: An average game, should be played at some point
8: A good game, should buy at some point
    9: A great game, day-one purchase
10: A game that goes above and beyond the generation, its transcendent.

From what I read Vita wasn't going to support Flash from launch, but they were going to patch it in later.

Doesn't really bother me and anyway it's say's that:

Sony's upcoming PlayStation Vita will not support Adobe's Flash platform in its web browser...at least, not at launch.
So chances are that there would be a patch update for Vita sometime in the future which would allow Flash support.

it's disappointing to see another device drop flash support, especially with some of the new things that flash 11 is capable of.

Flash is something that I don't need on a mobile gaming device when it does better games than anything Flash has provided on the market. Also considering the fact that 64-bit Explorer 9 doesnt support Flash (for some reason I dunno know why), I'm not at all surprised that Flash is slowly being unsupported.

Kinda hard to drop flash when it doesn't have it. But like others have said, it might get a FW update with it included. The PSP and possibly the Ericson are the only playstation devices to have it, PSP after a FW update. Doesnt bother me either way. I almost never surf the web on the PSP or the Ps3. I use it for what it's intended to be, a gaming machine.
