AT&T Unveils Data Plans for PlayStation Vita | News & Opinion |

AT&T on Monday unveiled the data plans that will be available for the PlayStation Vita when it debuts in the U.S. on Feb. 22.

Gamers can purchase 250MB for $14.99 or 2GB for $25 on their 3G Vitas, the carrier said. Users can also tap into the free Wi-Fi available from AT&T's more than 29,000 nationwide hotspots.

Both plans will be month-to-month and will not require a contract, AT&T said.

"The data plans for the PlayStation Vita will give gaming enthusiasts a convenient and seamless path to connect to a nationwide mobile broadband network while gaming on the go," Glenn Lurie, president of emerging devices at AT&T, said in a statement. "We are looking forward to providing PlayStation Vita users the ability to experience a new era of portable gaming through wireless integration. This introduces an entirely new gaming experience, with access to popular social networking sites, right on the device."

That includes services like Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, and Twitter.

The Vita will also have a location-based "near" app that will let gamers find out what other gamers in their area are playing and which games are most popular. The feature will also allow for "gifting," where you can share virtual game items by checking in at various locations.

"For example, in the popular kart racing series ModNation Racers: Road Trip, PS Vita users will be able to collect rare gift items provided through the game when visiting specific points of interest in 45 major cities around the world," AT&T said. "They can then share them with other PS Vita owners through the 'near' application."

With "LiveArea," meanwhile, players can get the most recent information about games via the PlayStation Network. "Users can check on their friends' accomplishments with LiveArea when they're playing the same game, triggering real-time communication," Lurie said.

The PlayStation Vita lands on Feb. 22, but those who purchase a special bundle can get it a week early. The 3G version will be available through AT&T for $299.99, while the Wi-Fi-only option will be $249.99.

The PlayStation Vita made its debut in Japan last month, and sales thus far have been somewhat sluggish, according to reports.
