PlayStation Vita Sales Fall Below 20,000 -- Andriasang.com

PlayStation Vita sales continued to fall following the holiday sales rush. For the week spanning January 9 through January 15, Media Create reports sales of 18,361 units for the system, down from last week's 42,915 units.

Vita's sales progression since launch looks like this:

    324,859 -> 72,479 -> 42,648 -> 42,915 -> 18,361

Vita wasn't alone in seeing a post holiday drop. 3DS fell over 50% to just above the 100,000 mark. PS3 and PSP also saw drops, but remained above the Vita in overall sales.

Here's the full hardware chart for 1/9 to 1/15, with last week's sales in parentheses.

    • 1. 3DS: 100,668 (240,819)
    • 2. PS3: 30,332 (74,459)
    • 3. PSP: 22,538 (71,033)
    • 4. PSV: 18,361 (42,915)
    • 5. Wii: 14,179 (49,525)
    • 6. DSi LL: 1,515 (3,971)
    • 7. X360: 1,519 (2,738)
    • 8. DSi: 1,206 (3,565)
    • 9. PS2: 766 (1,323)

Sales trackers may have noticed that Media Create appears to have stopped tracking DS Lite. The system was reported last week with just 28 unit sales.

The software chart for the same period show the first new releases for the year. PSP's Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Masou Shinki II debuted at top with 81,896 units. Also debuting in the top 10 were Nintendo and Tecmo Koei's Fatal Frame offshoot Spirit Camera and Namco Bandai's Ace Combat 3D.
Here's the full software chart, with life to date sales in parentheses.

    • [PSP] 01. Super Robot Taise OG Saga Masou Kishin II (Namco Bandai, 01/12): 81,996 <- NEW
    • [3DS] 02. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01): 52,266 (1,369,623)
    • [3DS] 03. Monster Hunter 3G (Cacpom, 12/10): 44,644 (1,128,498)
    • [3DS] 04. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 11/03): 40,154 (1,239,440)
    • [3DS] 05. Inazuma Eleven Go (Level-5, 12/15): 20,777 (346,135)

Am I missing something here? Just because they didn't sell a lot at launch, doesn't mean they lost money, and they still got sales weeks after.
Or, am I missing something major?

I know this is a PS3 site but I love how when sonys consoles dont sell massivly at launch it gets shrugged off but yet last year when the 3DS wasn't selling too well a good % of this site wished it would just fizzle out and go die in the corner.

Now I for one don't want or wish for a console to sell poorly heck I'll probably get one of these when the price drops enough and theres actually a few games released that I'm interested in.

PS3 sales on top of xbox sales 20:1? That's pretty cool.

the xbox is literally dead in japan aint a suprise

only thing keepin it alive was [email protected] (awesome game, basically you manage a big group of pop stars, manage their concerts too, and stuff like that, have a trailer and some gameplay footage where you help them audition) till that moved to the ps3.

Well, now that's sad and worrisome. If they were 40k-50k like last week, I don't think it'd be that bad, but less than 20k? For a new console, whatever it is, that's shit. I wonder what Sony will do about it, or whether they'll simply wait 'till it gets released in EU and US and hope the sales improve.

I guess I should've figured that. The game sounds weak, but I'll take your word for it. After all I attempted to play TV Superstars

trust me from what i seen it's no wonder why it's popular in japan.

there isn't a game like it in the western world.

here's a site to buy the ps3 version (the price is terrible because japan companys love ripping off their users)

Ok, so sales have dropped significantly for all platforms in the 2nd week...likely due to people receiving their post Christmas credit card statements and saying "oh fuck, I'm broke! Best put off buying that new console for a bit". Now in a scenario such as this one, looking at raw figures isn't going to give an indication of how well a console is doing, so I've added each systems fall as a percentage compared to the previous week. As you can see, the Vita faired quite well, only dropping 57.22% compared to the 3DS' 58.20%.

    • 1. 3DS: 100,668 (240,819) -58.20%
    • 2. PS3: 30,332 (74,459) -59.26%
    • 3. PSP: 22,538 (71,033) -68.27%
    • 4. PSV: 18,361 (42,915) -57.22%
    • 5. Wii: 14,179 (49,525) -71.37%
    • 6. DSi LL: 1,515 (3,971) -61.85%
    • 7. X360: 1,519 (2,738) -44.52%
    • 8. DSi: 1,206 (3,565) -66.17%
    • 9. PS2: 766 (1,323) -42.10%
Another thing to consider is the share of total units sold and the variance in this figure over a given period. Out of the 191074 consoles sold in the second week, 9.61% of consoles sold were Vitas, an increase of 0.86% over the previous week. Sure, a 0.86% increase doesn't sound like much, but what it translates to is an increase in market share in a declining market. It's this figure, the percentage of consoles sold, that is the imprtant one to watch. As long as this figure is increasing you can say that it's doing well.
