Valve: If we have to sell hardware, We will.

Valve: 'If we have to sell hardware we will' -Destructoid

In an interview with Penny Arcade, Valve's Gabe Newell said that they would get into the hardware game if it became necessary. Valve wants hardware production to move forward with technology, and would be willing to develop hardware if it came to that.

"If we have to sell hardware we will," Newell said to PA. "We have no reason to believe we're any good at it; it's more we think that we need to continue to have innovation, and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that's what we'll do."

Newell says that he would rather leave the hardware to the specialists, though:

"It's definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we'd rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it's important enough that if that's what we end up having to do, then that's what we end up having to do."

Wouldn't that be nuts? A Steam console?

I'm not going to lie, I have been PC gaming more than PS3 gaming lately, and I am really enjoying PC gaming more than PS3. It just seems smoother, and easier.

Agreed. I'm tired of blowing several grand every few years on a new gaming PC and don't use a PC for anything but gaming.

Gimme Steam in a box for under a grand and i'll be happy.

Wow. You guys do realize that a game console (PS3, 360) IS a pc that is scaled back so that it can just play games, right? And that if Valve made a "PC" like that, it would be a game console, right? Do you know how ridiculous this sounds? I think what you guys REALLY mean is that you want digital distribution as good as steam on a console, otherwise you guys are just spouting nonsense. I mean, PC gamers talk so much shit about consoles, but Valve mentions something about possibly making a console and you're all throwing money at your screens.
Hey. Hey. Look. Look at me. I'm playing video games.

I'd like to add that besides Steam's Console would be an scaled down PC, it will have to have some form of an closed system to work. If it does than Steam can still entrice Indie Developers and all sort of the good stuff to thier console.

Actually, Valve would be creating a PC that you could use to browse the internet, troll idiots, watch porn, listen to music and play games (like any other PC), not just to play games. They make games for the PC and thus, they'd be creating a PC, not a console. Why? Because their makert is the PC market. Their fanbase consists of PC gamers. They wouldn't alienate them (and shoot themselves in the foot) by creating a console.

It would be cool if it was a console with the ability to upgrade without being forced to pay $599 every 5-10 years.

There's a tonne of games that are on PC that aren't available on console. Take almost the entire Strategy, Sim, MMO and Indie genres for example.

Steam collects a wealth of hardware data and no doubt uses this info to set performance benchmarks. Valve is in a stronger position to know what gamers play and what they play it on than any PC manufacturer. It makes sense for them to use that knowledge to create their own gear, with the potential for cloud-based resources for both hard and software.

Some of us also have large PC game collections, many of mine are in Steam. If Valve producing a "PC console" means I get to keep playing PC games alongside my 360 and PS3 without blowing thousands on an entirely new rig every few years, what's the problem? Spouting nonsense indeed...

Steam should buy out OnLive. Bringing their game collection to a system like OnLive would be amazing.

but onlive is bringing major competition to steam due to the fact it can be played on mobile tablets and smartphones. there's almost no way to buy onlive now. too late. the ship has sailed.

more competition = more batshit steam sales

They can partner with Gaikai though to show off demos on steam (walmart uses them already on their site).

Thanks, OnLive! I could never use it. As soon as I tried to run it, it'd close saying my internet sucked lol.

So this sounds like a cheaper PC? Meh, no biggie. The PC market is all based off of time. Wait long enough and soon things will become cheap enough to play and cheap enough to upgrade.

If you read the full interview, Gabe basically says thats his goal.

This I find incredibly interesting, particularly when you consider if they go with these SoC-based architectures. You can get away with having the same core architecture for several generations because something like Freescale's iMX, nVidia's Tegra, or TI's Jacinto keeps the same socket/interface.

I think you could get to a point where you could switch out a board to upgrade and then just have a software update to take advantage of the new functionality.

Very cool idea, although I am going to be brutally honest... Valve won't be building/developing the HW. Most likely this will be an Apple-situation where they will get someone like Samsung to develop and build a Valve branded device.
Gauss's Piracy Uncertainty Principle: When you pirate a game, that act inherently changes the results of what is to come after your pirating. You can't make any statement with any certainty regarding what would have happened had you not pirated the game.

    Gauss's Rating Rationale:
0-1: A game whose very existence is abhorrent to all things creative and intelligent.
2-4: A just plain bad game.
5-6: A game that has alot of mistakes, but is atleast playable and has some enjoyable sections. Good for a rent.
7: An average game, should be played at some point
8: A good game, should buy at some point
    9: A great game, day-one purchase
10: A game that goes above and beyond the generation, its transcendent.
