Why I Don't Buy Games At Launch

First of all, allow me to say that I really dig this PS3Trophies.com site and obviously I love playing video games. I often follow the latest games that are being released and look forward to getting the newest ones (Max Payne 3, anyone?) However, I've reluctantly admitted to myself that buying games on Day One is a massive fail. Thanks to online consoles, reliance on patches to produce a fully functioning game has become the norm. I think it was Fallout: New Vegas that was the turning point for me. I spent $60 the day it came out, got it home and was disgusted and enraged to find frame rate slowdowns and constant freezing requiring a hard reset. Essentially, the same buggy problems that Fallout 3 had. Some fun that was! I'm not saying it's easy to make a flawless open-world RPG, but as a customer I was less than pleased.

Also, the DLC craze has me ticked off. It's nice that companies are releasing extra content in addition to the game itself, but $60 was already a lot to pay for a game. Now there's add-ons, bonus missions, skins, weapons, etc. that can raise the cost of enjoying a game's full experience by up to $40. I have decided that if this is to be the new normal, I'll choose to wait for price drops so that I can get the game AND the other content for no more than the $60 entry fee. In other words, when the game comes down to $30-35, then and only then will I be willing to shell out all that extra coin for DLC.

Besides, I have a huge backlog of games to play and trophies left to earn in the games I've finished. If more and more games are going to be released basically unfinished, i.e. in need of a patch (Skyrim, Twisted Metal) and then DLC will be added after the fact, I may as well just be patient and play when the game has been fixed up and becomes affordable enough to get all the maps, costumes, etc. without breaking the bank.

    Thoughts?

why i buy games at launch

-exploit the shit out of early launch glitches for maximum gain (oblivion infinite gold glitch and Skyrims Fortify Potion glitch for example)

-Highest Multiplayer Population of a game

-Avoid Spoilers because you already beat the game since you bought at launch.

-overall a better experience because you have a mass of people that just got it too, all of them exploring the game at the same time and setting down road for future players (Strategy Guides, Tips and tricks, etc.)

personally for me if i really want a game and am dying to play it then it's stupid for me to wait for a price drop because one is never guaranteed anytime soon. and i don't feel like waiting months to play a game i really want. and dlc is always extra content that can add to a game but never needed to enjoy a game to the max so sometimes i buy dlc and sometimes i don't. just depends on the real value of it and how much they are charging. i have a huge backlog of games that i need to play too but when something new comes along and i really want it then i get it. plain and simple.

If i have the $ and I want it, I buy it, simple, dont like to wait. The only reason I wouldnt, would be because I dont have the $. FF13-2, J&D HD Collection, ME3, & DMC HD Collection were all bought with a gift card,.......but SSX which i wanted,I cant afford right now so I have to wait. dlc is just a drag when its there at launch but as stated, its not needed for me to enjoy the game.

The only games I preorder are the ones I know I will like... like Fighting games and for all the reasons Ps360 mentioned above! One thing I hate though is that the online server is always shit and the dlc trophies >:F

Why would you want to exploit glitches, what gain do you get from it?
I figured the game itself should be fun and to me glitches take that away.
Also, it can't be that hard to avoid spoilers from a game.
About a month ago I got myself Infamous 2, didn't know anything about it yet until I played.

I never get games at launch cause I gave myself a budget for games of €20 max, else I wouldn't have much left for other things to do.
And I really dislike all the DLC coming out with so much games lately which can actually be a reason for me not to get the game at all.

also glitches are amazing for games. They make them more entertaining when it's a fun glitch.

Why I don't buy games at launch anymore (big titles for consoles usually):
DLC. Fuck that DLC bullcrap. It's obvious, that there is gonna be a GOTY, Super, Ultimate Editions after a while anyways.

and with me having to use my money for other things in life, being ripped off sucks ass.

I still buy PSP and DS games whenever they are launched day one though, since they aren't DLC-added-content-version-prone.

I only buy games at launch when:
-There's no online mode (Dead Space)
-I know I'm not getting DLC for the game (Little Big Planet)
-I really wanna play the game (BioShock Infinite, when it's released)

Otherwise I wait for a price drop. I have many games that I have yet to finish and/or even play, so waiting 2-3 months or more won't really hurt me. I have yet to get Uncharted 3, Arkham City, Dark Souls, etc.

And games like XIII-2, Mass Effect, Fallout, Skyrim...it's best to wait for the GOTY editions. Or at least for all the DLC to be released first.

I know the feeling. I've waited for months for Fallout New Vegas Ultimate edition because I knew there was going to be a "Ultimate or GOTY" edition. But, for the rest I like playing, if I really want to play it, then day 1 buy for me (Unless I reserved it, then even better )

I know exactly what you mean, but the main reason why I don't buy games on Day 1 alot is simply because I can't afford it at the time they release most of the time.

To be honest, I get my games through gamefly. I got tired of buying a brand new game, just to beat it, trade it in, and oh wait. There's dlc, which means I have to pick it back up AGAIN to knock out the dlc stuff. That's bs. And then, some game never come out with an all-in-one edition (Star Wars: FU 2 - afaik). I've purchased a couple games multiple times because of dlc and it's pretty frustrating. I'm not going to keep a game for over a year while waiting around on dlc, so I'll either pick it up cheap (if no dlc) or get it through gamefly and offer my support by buying trophy based dlc. Dlc is here to stay, might as well accept it.

Oh, and offer my support by getting the online passes as needed.

I usually pre order my games everytime I have the money, especially if I really look forward to the game. The only time I was disappointed is when I bought Dragon Age 2...

Cool. I was curious how others feel about the "launch day purchase or not?" question; thanks for sharing. My decision not to buy games on Day One wasn't an easy one. I do love to play the newest stuff and it's hard to wait and wait, while trying to avoid spoilers. I used to have Gamefly but cancelled. Like others, if there's a game I absolutely have to play immediately then I might still buy it right away. Bioshock Infinite will likely fit that category. And I bought Arkham City the first day, no regrets. I just hate seeing how prices drop so quickly and knowing if I had just waited I could have saved a ton of cash and gotten three games instead. So I'm sticking to my "Don't Buy Games At Launch" strategy. The basic philosophy is: if a game is great, it will still be great three weeks, three months or three years from now.

I agree. Besides, here in South America games tend to cost a lot more, so it's not like I can afford launch prices.
For example, a friend got MGS4 just last month, and I was at his house amazed at how great the game looks and plays after all this time. I even own the game and still I get impressed.
Same with Shadow of the Colossus.

I agree with a lot of people here. Unless its a big series I always like to play, I just wait. It helps that I am living in Korea so it forces my hand, but with all the DLC we ALL KNOW a Game of the Year/Complete edition will eventually be released, which is just cheaper and smarter to buy in the long run.

I'm with you on some aspects. One there are so many sales, and like a month after a game comes out you can usually get it for $10-$20 cheaper. Then there's my backlog of games I'm trying to play catch up with. Also, I can rest easy that when I get a game a month or more after it's launched (sometimes even like a year later) all the bugs have been fixed and the experience is going to be the best it can be.

There are downsides. Spoilers, as mentioned before. (For example, someone spoiled the end of Portal 2 for me, and I only starting playing it last week). Also, if the game has an online component, most everyone is around the same level at launch. I played the Uncharted 3 beta and loved it, but I just started Uncharted 3 in January, and everyone has already hit max level. I am not enjoying it and will most likely sell the game or trade it in because of that. (I also hated the single player, but I was hoping the online would be more fun.)

There are some games I NEED to buy at launch. Assassin's Creed is one. Dead Space would be another (like, if they announced Dead Space 3) and main MGS games. (Not Revengence or the PSP titles. I can wait on those). That's all because of the story. I am very invested in those games' fictions, so I just NEED to know what happens.

    Good thread man.

I try to always buy at launch, then if it goes on sale a month later I go and get the money back since I get 45 days at Best Buy because of the Reward Zone ...
