blu ray drive is dead :(

the bad news is my blu ray drive has died on me. i can't play blu rays, dvds, or disc games. i'm stuck with psn purchases only at the moment.

the good news is it can be fixed at a local computer store for about $110

more bad news is i can't afford to fix it right now so i have to wait.

more good news is i have games like GTA IV and a few others i've downloaded and have been waiting to play

anybody else have this happen? i don't have the ylod or anything like that. it's just my drive has crapped out on me

A friend of mine his 60GB ps3 first suffered a YLOD than 3 months later the disc drive died on him while he was playing uc2 back in 2009. If I had choice i rather have my disc drive day because I have enough ps3 purchases to last me a while. My ps3 is almost 3 years old so anything is possible.

    Oh no, I'm getting scared

How long have you had your PS3, and what kind of PS3 is it?

well it's an original fatty that has had the hdd upgraded and i guess it was just its time. thought i agree i would rather have this problem than ylod. much easier and cheaper to fix as far as i understand.

I hope you get it fixed.

Damn consoles, the more technology that goes into it, the easier it is to crap out on you.

Drive failure is a precursor to YLoD.

Rather than pay $110 at a local shop (that may or may not be qualified to handle the request), you can simply purchase the part yourself (about $65) and install it in about 15 minutes.

i appreciate the heads up but this local shop is MORE than qualified to fix my ps3. i've done a lot of research on them. i wouldn't just let anyone open up my baby.

Happened to me in Feb. '011. I sent it into Sony for less then your appraisal, $90 out of warranty. The only down side it that it took a good 3, 3 1/2 weeks to get back to me.

Yes, it happened in the Christmas eve of 2009, and I paid like $80-$100 to get ir repaired. The dude even said it wasn't the first time someone had this problem and that, like the YLOD and RROD, it was a manufacturing problem.

Also, to what dj said, it wasn't a precursor for my YLOD since that crap happened almost 2 years later, and it was, funnily enough, even cheaper to fix (like $50-$60).

I still remember the game I blamed for this: Fallout 3 GOTY.

That seems reasonable to me. Your PS3 lasted five years and you must of gotten plenty of use out of it. I would be very happy if my current PS3 slim lasted another 3 years and then died on me. I know electronics should be built to last but the PS3 has moving parts which make its lifespan unpredictable.

The motor or the lense? And either way, it's an easy fix and you should do it yourself bro. $110 is outrageous....

If you decide to take the venture of repairing it yourself, I will provide links for you. This is not a difficult task. I did it myself. I highly recommend you take out the drive before ordering your laser. Put the PS3 back together (after all, you still want to play your PSN games). Then take apart the drive to view the laser. REMEMBER TO EJECT YOUR DISK before you do any taking-apart. I made this mistake (completely forgot one was in there) when I did it and let me tell you, it's a bloody nightmare to get things back in order once you've fucked that up.

    KES-400A
    KES-410
    Required Screwdrivers
Taking Apart Your PS3 PT 1
Taking Apart Your PS3 PT 2

Ok. So I did some work looking for some of this stuff. I had about half of the links bookmarked already, however, I had to hunt for the Ebay sellers and YouTube videos. Least you could do is look at this stuff. I hope this helps you.

Note: I already had the tools necessary to do this work. I just figured I'd give you the link in case you do not.
