So... Dead Space?

This is a discussion on So... Dead Space? within the General PS3 Discussion forum, part of the Everything PlayStation; I hear that Dead Space 1 and 2 are really great games, but... I get scared. How scary is it?...

The first one scared the hell out of me. It just has a creepy atmosphere to it. And some situations are generally scary. But it's mostly just jump scares after a while.

Dead Space 2 however isn't as frightening, but more action packed. Which didn't bother me much.

If you're gonna get scared, it would be when you're playing the first one. I asked someone if Dead Space was scary and he said sometimes it can be. Which is what I'll say to you.

But after you play it, it isn't that bad at all.

It depends, Dead Space has its moments and is definitely scary at times but if you played the first three RE games imo those are alot scarier than DS so you should be fun. Remember play with the lights off for the best experience with the game

    Buy Assassin's Creed 2.
Dead Space took the 'fuck you fanbase' route.

I've played up to chapter 3 of Dead Space on another account. It is creepy and it sets the atmosphere up with ambient sounds and lighting effects. Plus you aren't the most nimble person, and you can't pause when you need to go into your inventory to use an item, and those necros can get pretty fast. It's all pretty gruesome and gory too, and you feel alone all the time. Quite a few shock moments to get your pulse beating.

So the overall experience is well.. pretty creepy, not for the faint hearted. But after getting used to the atmosphere and mentally blocking out things that don't matter, it becomes manageable. I imagine by the second or third playthrough you probably wouldn't feel so freaked out most of the time, especially if you know what's coming.

If you dislike being scared then I would say don't buy them. Especially not 1. However they are extremely good games. I love being scared, so I love Dead Space.

I agree with Vulgar, the first one is scarier. DS is one of the few games that has actually scared me. I played it with the lights off and my surround sound volume up on my first playthrough, i wouldn't recommend it. DS2 is more action packed but there are some tense moments in it too.

I played through both and never once did I jump or feel in any way scared.
    They both lack atmosphere.
In fact if anything I was bored out of my mind for the most part.
    I just liked shooting necromorphs.

So bored that you Platinum'd both Dead Space and Dead Space 2? So bored, that you sat through Hard Core mode? Okay tiger

Dead Space has a really good atmosphere. It also kind of has that old school survival horror feel where advancing is tense because you don't just mow the enemies down. Dead Space 2 went way more action orientated and lost a lot of the atmosphere. Both boil down to jump scares, though, in the end.

I have to mention it in every type of thread like this but for a true horror experience play Silent Hill 2. Even now and knowing what happens it still creeps me out. Plus there's a wonderful HD collection that has number 3 chucked on there as well.

And yes it does lack atmosphere.
Look at old school resident evil, it had atmosphere for ONE reason only.

Not many games are more atmospheric, only the very, very best of the survival horror genre.

Dead Space to me was never survival horror.
Resident Evil took that crown to it's grave, dead space is just some shoot em' up tps set in a dark environment.
I'm waiting for Shinji Mikami's next game codenamed Zwei, been waiting for some sort of announcement from him for over 5 years.
