    Mass Layoffs Hit Prototype Developer

Prototype developer Radical Entertainment saw a "significant reduction" in staff today and will no longer develop its own games.

The news was confirmed today on Twitter by senior audio designer Rob Bridgett, who formerly worked for the studio. "RIP Radical Entertainment 1991-2012," Bridgett wrote.

IGN News: Mass Layoffs Hit Prototype Developer - YouTube
We received the following statement from an Activision spokesperson:
"Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience. Radical is a very talented team of developers, however, we have explored various options for the studio, including a potential sale of the business, and have made a difficult conclusion through the consultation process that the only remaining option is a significant reduction in staff. As such, some employees will remain working for Radical Entertainment supporting other existing Activision Publishing projects, but the studio will cease development of its own games going forward."
Separately, Radical posted the following statement on its Facebook page:
"Hi everyone. Yes, there's some unfortunate news to share today. This morning Radical Entertainment went through a significant reduction in staff. We're very proud of what we achieved with the Prototype franchise, but unfortunately, the Blacklight virus didn't spread as far as it could. For PC gamers, rest assured that the PC version of Prototype 2 is still going to launch on July 24th as planned. And a special 'thanks' to the Prototype Army and all our extremely loyal and passionate fans for supporting Radical Entertainment. We couldn't have come this far without you."
Prototype 2 debuted at number 1 on the NPD Group's monthly sales chart when it was released in April. In addition to Prototype and its sequel, Radical previously developed The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Crash Tag Team Racing and even SNES educational game Mario is Missing. A full list of the studio's library of titles can be seen here.
We wish the best of luck to anyone affected by today's news.

Damn, that sucks big time. You never want to see anyone shut it down, but I guess things didn't work out for them. All the best to the whole crew.

I have yet to play a Prototype game, and I'm doubting if I ever will. Might try them eventually

Great so there goes my hope of them ever re-releasing The Simpsons Hit & Run in HD with trophies or as a PS2 classic.

Hopefully the developers can find a job with another gaming company. I never played the Prototype games, but I always wanted to try them. Heard they were pretty good games.

Man I would have loved to play Hit And Run again with trophy support if it ever happened but now it looks like that will never happen . Such a shame whenever a game developer shuts down.

You see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push

They made two of my favourite PS2 games.
Simpsons Hit N' Run and Scarface.
Never played prototype though, nevertheless this sucks.
Another awesome sandbox developer bites the dust, just like pandemic a few years back.

Can't say that I'm bothered that no more Prototype games will be released, but it's never good news when a developer shuts down. None of their previous titles really stand out to me either...

Strange that their official site says they're recruiting

Losing [PROTOTYPE] doesn't sway me much, but nevertheless a sad day. Hit and Run was fun. Maybe as a swan song they'll rerelease it. Unlikely, but...

I'm not good at keeping up with which developers go to which games. However, always said to here that another one has gone out
