Sony Didn't Drop the Price of the PS3 So As Not To Upset You

Usually, when a new form factor existing video game hardware debuts, there's a corresponding change in the asking price. But the upcoming re-design of the PlayStation 3 seem to buck that trend, with the 250 GB bundle announced this week set to go for $270. Prices on older models—a 160 GB version starts at $250 and a 320 GB sibling at $300—aren't moving either. Sony's explanation says that consumers don't want a price change. Say what?

In an interview with Engadget, Sony exec John Koller cites that consumer feedback as the reason they're holding fast on the MSRPs for the PS3:

"There's no price drop formally, but the thing that's been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there's been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we've heard from our consumer, 'Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value.'"

    Sony logic.

Did Sony hire a combination of Microsoft's and Nintendo's executives during the past few months or what?

It's like they took a comment from current PS3/Vita owners talking about software, and applied the logic to hardware bundles most of them wouldn't be interested in now that they already have the hardware.

You're right, I'm not gonna buy a PS4, I'm gonna revert back to being a Nintendo fan and buy a Wii U.

being that when the ps3 first came out every console they sold cost more to make than it sold for i think they have earned the right to make a profit,i wonder how much the wii u costs to make,im sure alot less than what it is selling for.

Make sense. Also makes sense to make the slimmer and newer model cost more than the previous models? What?

If Sony even dared lower the price I would fling my Playstation out the widow and become a Xbox fan

The price doesn't bother me at all. I am alright witht he pricing of the system. As for being mad if it lowered, I think that's not really accurate of the picture but whatever.. no one is going to be "mad" that something is cheaper. That's just dumb. lol.

but the price seems fair to me completely. Guess they get some profit in from it too now.. or least a bit more.

    Err...what?

Sony's lost billions on their computer entertainment division for years. They're cutting cost in an effort to get back to profitability. If they don't achieve that in the next few years, there's a very real threat of dropping out of the console market completely.

Um...Why would they need to drop the price exactly? If they are selling well, good for them for making a profit. The more money Sony makes is good for Sony. Which is good for everyone who likes Sony. I would be worried if they felt they needed to lower the price to sell their product.
