Do you still hear the start up?

It could probably just be the video configuration. Did you switch cables, or move the PS3?
You should always consider these factors before messing with any of the internal settings.

A bit more detail could help us figure out what the issue is
    It's just a flesh wound.

One site says that you should remove the HDD itself and see if the PS3 boots up correctly. If so then your HDD is corrupt. If it says "disc not found" when you boot then it isn't your PS3 and is the HDD. You should then try to connect it to a PC so it will auto-format. You would lose all your data but not have to scrap your PS3.

Try using the hidden boot menu: (From random website)

    to reset video input:
    1. shut offf the ps3
    2. press and hold the power button until system beeps twice (once for on, another for resetting video settings)

to get to the restore menu:
    1. shut off the ps3
    2. press and hold the power button until the system beeps twice AND turns off again
    3. press hold the power button until the system lets out two fast beeps

Supported Features of 2.50 Recovery Mode
    The current Recovery Menu supports:
    - Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
    - Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
    - Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
    - Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
    - Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
First restore file system, if that doesn't work, rebuild database. Try other methods if you need to.
DON'T restore PS3 system unless you've given up all hope of keeping your data!
