Lara Croft won't be swimming in next year's Tomb Raider

Global Brand Director for Crystal Dynamics, Karl Stewart, did a quick Q&A session on the official Tomb Raider twitter account this morning, and revealed an interesting design decision that will affect fans of aquatic exploration. The Tomb Raider reboot won't have any underwater shenanigans during gameplay though not because the new Lara Croft has forgotten how to swim, thankfully.

Video game characters often have issues with the backstroke; Grand Theft Auto: Vice City protagonist Tommy Vercetti could famously survive gunshots, but wouldn't last more than a second in waist-deep water. In contrast, some of our fondest memories of Lara Croft involve diving through secret, watery passages.

well i for one think they now have a big whole of game to fill. i didn't like every water sequence in every tomb raider game but they had their place. so with this now gone from the new game i feel they are going to have to come up with something cool to make me forget about it. your thoughts?

Lol! Haven't played a Tomb Raider game since Legends, but I guess this is a big loss for the big aquatic exploration fans.

Lots of open games you can't swim in so I am OK with this.

Not one TR was without her swimming somewhere, maybe AOD, but TR 1-4, Legend, Anniversary , & Underworld all did, i cant remember for certain if Chronicles did or not. The new TR looks to be an amazing game, so no swim, no biggie. But it will be the first to not have it in, all good, im sure they have something planned on the sequal.

If it doesn't mess up the gameplay or the story, I'm fine with it. Some of the aquatic exploration were good, others were not. Some of them were, to me, just put in the game, not to enhance the story, but because "they've always been there" sort of feel. It's like the "Gunner Missions" in CoD, where you are in a Chopper or AC130, for no other reason, than "it's part of the franchise" aspect.

I generally do not enjoy swimming sequences in games... so I'm not too sad about this.

The article mentions that Tomb Raider won't have underwater "shenanigans". This could mean fighting or killing creatures, not necessarily swimming.

If they do remove the swimming portion, the Tomb Raider game appeal will lose its flavour, as some of the underwater sequences were pretty cool.

And of course, no Tomb Raider post could be complete, without pointing out a rather busty point...forget the back stroke, what about the breast stroke ?

I haven't played a Tomb Raider game since I had a PSOne, so I don't know what you guys are missing out on. I can imagine for a Tomb Raider game though that underwater gameplay was fun-ish. It's part of the exploration I guess.

In Davey's defence, isn't it the major reason this news is even brought up?

Sounds to me like i'm going to be cursing less due to shitty controls and camera angles causing me to get lost and drown under the H2O, thank God

Well this is a huge disappointment I guess they were serious when they said that they wanted to make Lara Croft into a more sophisticated character.
