10 Game Franchises That Deserve Their Own Zombie Mode

Players have an endless army of enemies to kill, but few are more satisfying to take down than a herd of zombies. These skin snackers have been invading our consoles and computers since the beginning of the industry. Lately, the virus has spread, and it's only a matter of time before it infects the rest of the industry. When that day comes, these franchises should be the first to get the bug.

    [top]10. Mafia

It may not be the most popular open world game on the market, but imagine what would happen if the army of the undead dared to cross paths with the army of one of the country’s most powerful crime families. There would not be enough Febreeze in the world to get the stench of death out of the city.
Since another Mafia game is already in the works, 2K Czech might consider working on a zombie-infused DLC story to go along with it. The juxtaposition between the supernatural zombie horde and the super-PO’ed crime syndicate could make for an interesting, B-movie style match-up as one mob squares off against the other for total domination of the city and, quite possibly, humanity.

    [top]9. Thief

No one seems to be 100 percent sure of the status of the new Thief game. If it does ever get released, the developers could make up for the time we lost waiting for it by packaging the undead as a bonus mode.
Thief, of course, is a stealth game and any veteran of a zombie apocalypse will tell you that being able to move quietly and not draw attention to yourself is the key to survival. Just imagine chaining together 20 straight stealth kills on the hapless walkers.

    [top]8. Portal

Valve’s groundbreaking puzzle game may not offer traditional enemies or even a real gun, but a zombie add-on to the popular game could offer some unique, brain-teasing challenges. Chell or some other unlucky test subject could use the portal gun to prevent shuffling zombies from reaching them by shooting them through wormholes that spit them into conveniently-placed, cleverly-designed slaughtering devices courtesy of Aperture Laboratories. Now that we think about it, maybe this idea is better for the next Saw game.

    [top]7. Gears of War

We admit, this one's a little cheap because the locust are just a few gene strands shy of zombies already, but few weapons are as satisfying to use on an enemy as the Mk 2 Lancer Assault Rifle. Not only does it pack a massive amount of projectile firepower, but it has an awesome chainsaw bayonet that can help you carve up your enemies just in case that bullet to the head didn’t make your point clear enough.
Imagine the damage you could do to a whole mess of walkers with one of those things. Just the thought of being able to slice and dice zombies in a Gears of War-style experience made me want to put the actual gun and a zombie apocalypse on my Christmas wish list to Santa this year.

    [top]6. Burnout

It might be awhile before Criteron puts out another car crashing celebration since it has moved on to other slightly less reckless racing games. However, adding a zombie element could be worth the wait.
A massive ton of twisted steel that can go from zero to “haulin’ ass” in less than six seconds may not sound like much of a challenge, so in this case it's all about zombie volume. Since we can't get another proper Carmageddon (no disrespect to the Kickerstarter game), this is the next best thing. Just imagine the ridiculously detailed car crashes that the game can produce. Now throw shuffling corpses into the mix and you have the exact reason the Havok physics engine was created.

    [top]5. Assassin’s Creed

When the zombies come, most of us will probably run to a friend or neighbor who owns the most guns. However, guns are loud and noisy and they only attract more shuffling flesh piles long after you’ve run out of ammo. If you’re smart, you’ll flee to the guy who owns a collection of swords and a retractable wrist blade.
Setting some zombies loose in the worlds of the Assassin’s Creed games might not be kosher since it’s not very historically accurate, but a lot of fun could be had if it was part of a special download or separate DLC. Having to get up close and personal with your putrid prey to make a kill could put the “survival” element back into the “survival horror” genre.

    [top]4. LEGO

Decapitating a once-living human while its chewing on your leg isn’t going to earn a game an “E” rating, but replace the appendage with a cute little pink LEGO block and suddenly you're golden.
The recent spate of LEGO games that pay homage to Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman and The Lord of the Rings could help more-impressionable players learn the joys of destroying the undead without all the mess. LEGO could have a lot of fun with goofier fare like "Shaun of the Dead" or "Zombieland." Just the thought of a LEGO-fied Bill Murray cameo has us falling to pieces.

    [top]3. Max Payne

If gaming’s most depressed and down-on-his-luck character thinks things can't get any worse, imagine the unbridled rage and self-loathing that will spew forth when an army of zombies comes knocking on his door.
This addition of bullet time to zombie hunting would represent a whole new paradigm shift that might very well explode our brains. Max Payne 3 had one of the best enemy damage models we've seen, which kicks the gore quotient up near the breaking point. You need gritty with a zombie game, and Max Payne games have it.

    [top]2. The Marvel Universe

Zombie games might be on the rise, but compared to the comic book genre, they make the G-virus look like the common cold.
It might sound a sacrilege to stick such a tired comic book cliche into games that star some of its most storied characters, but the Marvel universe actually did just that, sort of. They turned their most storied characters into zombies. Making the good guys go bad in a video game could make for an interesting mash-up of zombie and comic book hero games. It’s also twice as convenient since both could use something revolutionary to resurrect them from tedium.

    [top]1. Star Wars

We've come across more bizarre races than we can remember while watching all the Star Wars movies, but none of them have even closely resembled an army of reanimated corpses. This landmark film, video game, TV, theme park ride and breakfast cereal franchise has also been one of the most reverent to its source material, especially when it comes to video games. It's time for a change.
If an entire race of straight-up undead is too much of a reach, a batch of zombified stormtroopers will suffice. Believe it or not, it’s not that much of a stretch. The novel “Death Troopers” imagines this very scenario with all sorts of gleeful gore and vivid violence. With Uncle George selling the IP to Disney, it's admittedly not likely, but I'll bet my blasters it would make for a great video game.

    Please don't.

The whole concept of a zombie apocalypse game is such a turn off now, because it's been done too often...

And to be honest, none of those 10 games sound any fun with zombies added into the mix.

While I wouldn't want to see zombies in any of these franchises (zombies were completely ruined this gaming generation and we DO NOT need more), there is an Aperture Science map for Killing Floor and it's quite fun.

If anything the only game I wanted to see with a zombie mode was Red Dead Redemption and it already happened. Now that's a GOOD example of proper DLC.
We definitely need a Stubbs the Zombie sequel.

NO.....MORE.....ZOMBIES!!! Man, I don't want to see anything else that has zombies in it. It's become way overrated in the past few years. Need a fresh direction to go in. For once, let them die and never respawn.

If one more zombie game comes out...

I do agree that the zombie thing is getting a bit out of control. Why not replace zombie with something else. Although I do have cool idea:

-I wish Resistance would've added Chimera horde mode, it should play like COD Zombie but replace zombie with Chimera.
    -Uncharted should try something similar

Like I said in another thread a couple of days ago, the whole zombie concept has been done to death these last few years. Everywhere you look now, zombies are rearing their f***-ugly heads, and it really has become a case of too much too soon. Admittedly, the AC concept sounds somewhat intriguing, since having to fight the undead without the benefit of assault rifles and rocket launchers would really ramp up the danger factor, but it just wouldn't feel right in the AC universe.

    Too many damn zombie games.
Like, enough with the bullshit. All of the zombie games now-a-days just have survival modes, and small maps. I like games, kinda' like Resident Evil or The Walking Dead, where there's an actual story line to it. Not just, oooh, kill some fucking zombies. It's not even fun anymore. I still like zombie apocalypse movies and such, but now, the games... It's just a big turn off. And oh my God, all these games don't suit zombies/zombie survival what so ever.
    Just, just stop.
I think the only remotely fun sounding one on that list is Assassin's Creed. The rest... No. Like, Mafia? What?

Rocksteady's Batman games. Nothing more satisfying than using your bare fists and bat gadgets to fight the hordes of zombies. Plus it'd be interest to see what Batman would do in a zombie apocalypse. Hell it doesnt even have to be a throw-away mode like many other franchises do, Rocksteady could make it into a whole side mission/story with a believable story.

I usually hate zombies being thrown in where they don't belong. From this list, the only one I would want to see would be Legos, and that's because it would be a standalone game made for it. Really, I'd love to see a Legos take on The Walking Dead.
