I'm happy with the prices right now... I only buy games on release day for full price if I know I'm gonna keep it. The others I'll wait until the price drops or rent

The price isn't the problem, it's the quality of the game.

Uncharted 2 gets sold brand new for 15, but yet just because COD4 is overly spent for, they keep the price at 40?

I know it's actually a benefit, but that just shows fucking greed, man....

I wish most companies will drop their prices around $20 just to make it so I can buy one extra every so often

Ok Gabe, I want you to release whatever new game you'll release soon $10-$20 cheaper than you'd price it at release, even if it's a digital copy.

This problem is universal to every market your country is dealing with...
Why can't a macro problem be applied to a single country's economy, particularly when the situation here is far worse than it is in Europe and the USA when it comes to the price of video games? Despite a relatively strong exchange rate, a lower median household income and weaker purchasing power of our dollar, we still pay almost double for our games!

As an example - on the USA PSN store, Tiger Woods 2012 is listed at $60. In the Oz store, it's $110. Our import laws and taxes do not account for an almost 100% markup on a DD game that has no product package, no shipping and significantly lower distribution costs. That price is determined by how much these companies think they can charge us and still get away with it, and it's starting to backfire on them with the proliferation of online shopping. The promise of cheaper DD games is yet to materialise, but importing significantly cheaper retail discs is certainly an option.

    As a sidenote -

Australia's intelligent handling of the economic crisis was -
    a) Sell more dirt to China. Without our mineral resources our economy would be in the shitter along with the rest of the world. We have a two-speed economy scenario where one sector is booming when all others are in or close to recession, particularly the retail industry.

    b) An incompetent Labour government blew through the largest surplus coffers in our history within 2 years that the prior Liberal goverment spent 10 years to accumulate, after paying off the earlier Labour government's mountain of debt. We're now at our highest government debt levels ever thanks to fucking ridiculous schemes like school playground improvements, roofing insulation (both of which ended up as massive rorts) and 'The National Broadband Network' (which to date is billions of dollars of vapourware) to stimulate an economy that didn't require it. The current government has the lowest approval rating in history thanks to royally fucking our economy due to their excessive spending.

Now lets say that new games cost only $50. That same person could buy 4 new games for $150.

Lets say games cost $30 new. That person would buy 5 new games a month for the same $150.

If new games were cheaper, more people would buy them new. It's that simple. Sure you'd make less money per unit, but wouldn't it make sense to make $30 per unit on 5 million units than $60 per unit on 1 million?
Yes but you have to figure out that if Uncharted 3 sells at 60$ Sony doesn't see 60$. They have to pay for shelf space, the cost to print the game etc.

DD has a lot cheaper overhead, thus they can sell the game cheaper.

Not to mention the map packs only have like four maps and they're extremely overpriced. ($15)

Oh, not quite my point. My point is the problem isn't caused by the video-game industry, but the differences in the economy between the US and the AU.

I am saying MOST of your goods should be going up in price.

I should have put intelligence in quotes or something, I was joking completely.

Your country is one of my shining examples as to why socialism just doesn't work, socialist concepts need to be heavily weighted against capitalist ones if there is any desire for long-term propserity.

You had a relatively level headed government for decades, then a socialist government comes in and wreaks years of work (as you pointed out) by fucking with things that the government has no business fucking with.

Yes, thats retail costs, keep in mind though its all about preserving profit margins in a for-profit business.

For example, Sony may have a 10%/$6 profit margin on a $60 game after development costs and distribution is taken into account.

Sony can sell a $60 game for less and maintain the same profit margin by using DD because the distribution costs are significantly less, for example Sony may be able to sell the same game for $45 and still see a $6 profit margin, and actually increase their profit percentages, thus increasing the overal buying power of the company relative to its usage.

Actually going back to my earlier response to ant1, its the one thing all socialists seem to miss. That $6 profit Sony makes on a copy of R3 is how they are going to pay for R4 to be made. Its also why used games hit publishers so hard.

If Sony can make games cheaper by saving loads of money on distribution, but they are making the same physical profit off of them... They can make more games, hire more people, do more things.

Games do not need to be charged as much in Australia, i dnt care for anyones reason who wants to object. charging double is pathetic and not needed. the only reason is for greed, Americans ( as most of the good games are from there that i play ) are sitting there laughing their arses off at us. hence why i dnt buy games now but use the 7 day money back guarantee and get all my money back as long as i finish the game in 7 days

Who laughs there ass of at you? Besides maybe a few on this site, I don't know anyone that thinks this is a laughing matter. And actually a lot of us feel bad for you because of your lack of choices to purchase games at a reasonable price. I couldn't imagine paying those kinds of prices. I even refuse to pay the prices that the US charges. I buy everything online to save money. I save thousands of dollars a year buying all my games and stuff online.
