Sony's PS Plus humiliates the game industry

Plus Points: Sony's PS Plus humiliates the game industry - Destructoid

PlayStation Plus is one of the most consumer-friendly, convenient, and worthwhile ideas to hit the PlayStation 3. More importantly, in an industry where publishers are trying to take more money than ever for less content, Sony's the guiding light in how to draw a steady payday from users in a way that makes everybody happy.

The company recently revealed Plus' discounts and giveaways amounted to a cumulative $2,472 in 2012. While it's unlikely a customer downloaded absolutely everything required to get these savings, it would be quite easy to at least make back the $50 entry fee in content.

Compare this to Microsoft, a company struggling more and more to justify its subscription service with a straight face. The Xbox 360 owner has systematically worked to hold its content to ransom in an increasingly futile bid to make Xbox Live Gold look worth its fee. The biggest feature is, of course, online play -- something available for free on PS3, Wii U, and PC. The company took something that was already a given, and held it back.
It's done this with practically every feature on Xbox Live Gold. Netflix, Amazon Video, and (before retirement) social apps like Twitter and Facebook all require Gold subscriptions to use, despite these items being freely available on almost every electronic device on the market. Hell, my television can access Netflix, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, and a Web browser, and they're all better than the Xbox 360 versions -- they browse faster, they stream more consistently, and their search functions blow the 360's pathetic offerings out of the water.

It's disgraceful that Sony's PS Plus philosophy is such an anomaly in the videogame industry, that choosing to reward, rather than punish, the customer is downright unique in contrast to Sony's closest rivals.

Cue backlash where folks say they own all the games already, the games are terrible, the service is terrible, Sony are terrible, Sony did this right but everything else they do is pure Villiany and other such things.

Plus is a bargain, pure and simple. More so with both a PS3 and Vita in your collection, this month alone in Europe we get Sleeping Dogs, F1 Race Stars, Quantum Conundrum, Wipeout 2048 and Lumines. Add that up even at the cheapest retail prices and it pays off a years subs in a month.

All I can say is What the heck... given that Sony gave us free games by subscribing in PS plus is a great move for all I care.. We gave them our support through ups and downs especially when they were hacked by Anonymous. Also it's not like we can play the games for full when our subscription ends, that's need to subscribe again in order to play them again.

So good luck Sony and B**** much Microsoft?

I buy the 90day trial every time , if its a month when your subscription is out and there are no games you like , then just hold off on getting it again until you fancy something , whether you like PS+ or not , it is optional and not forced upon you , there is nothing in it which makes it essential but plenty that makes it worthwhile well done Sony

I will concur with this post. Ever since I had PS+ it really saved me money on certain games. With Madden 13 being under $30, I dang for sure wasn't about to cough up retail price for it.

It makes up for the games on the Store that are triple the price of actual retail copies.
But yeah, after getting PS+, there are some good free games occasionally.

When they offered it me for free after the hack, I wasn't remotely interested in a subscription service for something that I couldn't really see the benefit for when the games expired (granted I should have researched it). But ever since someone (sorry, can't remember who it was, but you got your +rep) on here gave out a free code, I have loved it. The shit you get for free, or at least no extra cost, is fucking amazing each week / month and it has given me the chance to get some great games that I would never have played before hand - Bulletstorm, Double Dragon Neon, Bioshock 2, and now Sleeping Dogs (well in Feb), not forgetting a backup copy of Arkham City
Since then, I have bought 2 months and a year subscription and will continue to do so. Never used the online save features or whatever, 'cause never had a need to, but it's nice to have an extra option.
    Long live Sony.

Always released later today, and I don't see the problem, it is a wonderful idea, all PS owners should have it!

Nice to see a critic "get it right" about Sony for a change. When my entire block laughed in my face following the hack, I knew I would laugh harder in the end. I've seen the benefits of Plus from the beginning and it will keep getting better. To Sony, to Sony!

Yeah , its a fucking mystery to me why I would be expected to pay 60 for e.g Far Cry 3 and wait a couple days for it to download and have no physical property , when on the other hand I could walk into town and get a bit of exercise , get some fresh air , a bite to eat ...........................ooh and save 20+ and actually have the game .

I look at it this way. How soon must you have that game? Where I work I see people come in from time to time and bitch about how an HDMI cable in store is $20 on up yet you can get em online for as cheap as $5 and they ask me about it. As I always tell them, it all boils down to "how soon do you need it"? If you need the cable today, they got you by the balls. If you can wait a week or whatever due to shipping, always go that route.

I know that it's reverse in the sense that the digital game costs the same (sometimes more than) the store counterpart, it's all about "how soon do you need it"?

Let's face it. Most of the players of our beloved forum are trophy hunters. Right? Why they want a game to last forever?
As a player, what I love most in the world is to play everything that comes out, give it a try to every game and PS + allows me that.

    Sorry my english xD

One of the many reasons I ditched XBOX for a PS3. All my friends say, "you have PS3, you suck...haha." Then I ask them if they get their online for free. They are the suckers!

I've had Plus for a little less than 3 months (subscribed to try out the service) and honestly the titles we've been getting haven't been so great. I know it's because I've only used it for a few months but still. Of course we get cool games like LBP2 or Infamous 2 but those are kind of "must have" for PS3 users anyway.
In any case I just paid less than $20 for the 3-month service and I already got Darksiders which is $20 among other good games. I know I kinda contradict myself, what I'm saying is that the US service could offer better deals.
