    Rankings: Grand Theft Auto

Since the Final Fantasy rankings were a success, I now present you with the Grand Theft Auto rankings. Just like with FF, these rankings were presented by one person. There is no right or wrong answer so please don't bash someone's opinion. Just fun to see what everyone thinks.

Most people have VC as their favorite. Though it has a great setting and atmosphere, SA is my number one. I had much more fun with that game than any other GTA.

This is probably the only list that doesn't have SA in the top 3, hahaha.
    Personally my list is:

    1) GTA San Andreas
    2) GTA Vice City (I enjoyed more than SA and it's my favorite one in terms of setting and year but gameplay is obsolete after SA, I cannot play it anymore)
    3) GTAIV
    4) GTAIII
    5) The Ballad of Gay Tony
    6) Chinatown Wars for PSP (haven't played the DS version)
    7) Vice City Stories
    9) The Lost and Damned
    10) Liberty City Stories

The 2D GTAs are all the same to me and did not enjoy them as much really, so I'm not listing them here.
Also, the San Andreas bootleg mods like GTA Superman or GTA Vegeta are completely awful yet strangely fun to play.

SA is my favourite GTA and one of my all time favourite games.

IV was a disappointment for me, too realistic, thankfully, there's this not-so-realistic franchise called Saints Row.

Gotta give love to 1, 2, and london LOL I hade great times with those as well. But by todays standards they are completly unacceptable.

VC deserves #1 and so does SA to me.

GTA III was a breakthrough on the PS2, so that should be up there.

GTA IV was pretty good too.

I REALLY didn't like LC or VC stories at all but I know that they were good in there own right.

I played the classic GTAs when I was very young. They almost have nothing to show compared to their predecessors but without them, where would GTA be?

(other than NOT bird-eye's view )

    2. Vice City

    vice city always deserves #1

anyone else who disagrees doesn't know how atmosphere and story scale works

big cities don't matter when it feels fucking lifeless. Vice City threw you into the 80s so hard it makes 90s-00s kids nostalgia.

GTA IV is #2, I love New York and I love grand theft auto, so it's a perfect combo for me.

I dont know if you can count expansions, but ballad of gay tony is third.

I'm amazed. After his stupid and moronic picks on the FF one, he comes and picks a rightful #1 this time, and leaves San Andreas, it's crappy wanna-be RPG stats and both it's lifeless and uninspiring setting where it belongs.

Only thing one could say I've got against the list, is that GTAIII isn't above GTAIV, but that's not really bad by any means.

I'd rather gameplay over setting and San Andreas had so much content.

    1. San Andreas
    2. Vice City
    3. GTA IV

Gta IV used to be number 1 till I realised there's barely anything to do after completion unlike Vice City and San Andreas. VC had plenty fun side stuff but not on the scale of SA. I do agree Vice City has best setting but not a dealbreaker for me.

I prefer to be overwhelmed with content

Yes it had multiplayer but in GTA I prefer the singleplayer experience. In GTA IV multiplayer all I really played was Hangman's NOOSE trying to level up. Free roaming with friends is fun for a little while but soon gets boring. I think i'll enjoy GTA V multiplayer for a little bit but stick to singleplayer in the end.

You did? I wonder what kind of character you were, though.
That's pretty nice, and I never thought of doing RP on a free roaming game, maybe I will one day. If only the GTAIV PS3 servers weren't so empty nowadays...

As a side note I did find the RDR free roam was much better though, I spent hours playing with friends and strangers just causing trouble in saloons all over the map.

Thanks to GTA IV PC Hacks, anything i wanted to be.

It claims to be a cheat system, but it allows you to change your player model to anything you want, spawn any car/prop you want, You can even spawn story related NPCS and stuff. For People interested in DND esque Roleplay features this shit is gold.

it also helps if you want to make machinima.

i can pull any animation i want at anytime to, which was nice.

hilarious shit watching old grandmas humping a street pole

here's a example of this in action (if it gets a little boring skip to 8 minutes in):

It's kind of strange that Grand Theft Auto III is pretty underrated. The game, along with Final Fantasy VII are two of the most influential games of the last 20 years, with both being responsible for the mainstreaming of open world features, and RPG elements respectively. I find it unique that some people can put the technical, story, and overall aspects of GTA III in pespective, but FFVII is put on a pedestal by most people and have it's flaws completely overlooked.

Not the biggest fan of the series, even though I own most of the console titles, but the only one that deeply resonated with me after III, was Vice City which captured the atmosphere of 80's Miami culture in a really tight well delivered package. Since then, the games haven't really deviated from those two in ways that I could delve into. Whenever I play SA or IV, I find myself just wanting to goof off and then losing interest in that after 30-40 minute intervals, with the story being an afterthought.

Interesting list, and it's funny in comparison of the Final Fantasy how little variation there is in who likes what best.

Word. GTAIII was in charge of being influential and succeeded, while Vice City was in charge of following it up in a great manner and went beyond everyone's expectations.
