When I first bought my PS3 i swapped the HD for a 360gig. No memory issues anymore and the switch was really easy. However, you do you lose all the saved data you don't backup since it will reformat everything.

I'd recommend you use Cloud Storage for your save data if you are a PS+ subscriber since not all saves can be exported into a USB stick.
If not you can do a system backup into an external HDD and then restore it and not lose anything but I've heard it can corrupt some game data so you're better of downloading/installing everything again, even though it may take way longer.

The few min varies on the size of your old hard drive to the size of your new one. I went from a 500 gig drive that only had about 7 gigs free to a 1 tb hard drive. To back it all up on an external 3 tb HD, put the new HD into my PS3 and then transfer all the data off the 3 tb to the 1 tb took about 6 or 7 hours.

The process of just swapping HD's is minutes though.

You can also delete your install data for the games you are not playing anymore or as often. I'd recommend a bigger hard drive though. It makes it a lot more practicle and less worrying about how much disk space is left. My wife bought me a 750 gig hd last year for less then 70 dollars and installed it in less than 5 minutes.

yep bigger HDD is the way to go, i upgraded my old fat 40GB to 320GB, then my current slim 160GB to 320GB.

extremely easy to do, just make sure your screwdrivers fit snug in the screws or you'll shred them to shit.
