The internal fan should spin at all times while the console is power on.

the fan spins all the time but if your fan is starting to spin erratically, and make a hell of a noise then your console is more than likely on its way out, that's what happened to my last fat PS3, a month or so later i got YLOD.

Mine was fairly nosiy and has been for a while, then it finally gave up not long ago. Fortunately, nothing lost and got my game back. However, if your trying a repair, perhaps it may time to look for a new one because I've read almost everywhere that even the repair isn't really a viable one so maybe time to look for a replacement one. which is what I'm doing, I'm going to get a 500gb super slim when I have a few more pennies . But good luck with your repair
