    I don't know much about repair costs, but if your current one is old, I'd say the best time to get a new one is now. They're pretty cheap.

    If the tray is damaged but you are still able to play games when you load them, then you should be fine if you can deal with that, if not like harry says get a brand new PS3?

    A repair will cost you $150 if you send it to Sony, but you can probably do it yourself for $50.

    All in all, if you're not comfortable with DIY repairs, just buy a new console.

    Replacing a BR Drive is cheap and it's dead easy. A handful of screws, a couple of cables and you're done.

    There's a bazillion YouTube videos on how to disassemble a PS3. All you need is the right tools, some patience and a desire to learn something new.

    My disc tray is working okay now starting to play my PS3 more often.
