All your trophies are synchronized to your PSN account after clicking onto your profile. If you get YLOD and buy a new system all your trophies that were synced will show up on your new system. They're attached to your PSN not your system.
Lots of members on here have lost their system but their trophies were fine. You only lose your game data, which you can back up on to a thumb drive if you're worried.

No problem and if you're worried about it happening in the near future you might want to consider selling the system to someone else BEFORE it breaks, as you'll have more money to put towards the new system that way.

Don't be that guy who sells a near-death electronic to someone else.

If it's a Slim, the YLoD is not a problem. YLoD is related to the solder in the original Fats and was resolved by using a different compound in the Slims. Slim PS3s still die, but the casualty rate is far, far lower.

Also, backup your Game Saves either to PS+ or USB on a regular basis. Given Trophies sync to the PSN (select the "Use an Existing Account" option when signing up to the PSN on a different PS3), the only thing you risk losing is your saves. It's major a ball-ache if you're on a 100+ hour grind and the PS3 shits itself before you get the trophy.

I had the ylod on my 1st one and it is caused by solder melting on the main board you can fix it but its never the same again (I prolonged mine twice b4 it was unfixable) and yes the game saves r the important bit recommend getting plus and sync to the cloud as ant said.

I've only had my PS3 for..... Hey! It's 2 days its a year! Look at that.

Anyway, what do you all think are some signs or symptoms of your PS3 aging?

I regularly pull her out of her little space and dust her off. Give her a good polishing ya know?

Is there something I can do internally without breaking her open?

I've had my PS3 for I think 6 years now and it's still going strong Only symptom for me right now is that discs wont eject everytime I want to.
Other than that it's working pretty good. (40Gb HDD) xD

I use the vacuumcleaner once a month to get a bit of dust out of it and thats about it.

That's a pretty good run. The vacuum is a great idea! Suck all that dustyness out of the vents. I'll have to do that.
