Sony Experimented with Xbox Layout design for DS4

Sony flirted with Xbox layout for DualShock 4 design | Polygon

During development of the PlayStation 4 hardware, Sony experimented with a DualShock 4 controller design that was similar to Xbox 360, manager of the product planning department Toshimasa Aoki told GamesBeat.

"For the analog sticks, we did test having the analog sticks on top, since the Xbox has the left side on top [above the D-pad]," Aoki told GamesBeat "Especially from the shooter teams we got feedback that that's what they wanted. They knew that consumers liked the 360 for shooters."

"The feedback from the user test team said that we needed to test this version, the Xbox version, and this version," said Aoki. "[But having the two sticks symmetrical on the left and right sides] is kind of in our DNA. The prototype team, myself, and also the management team really felt that having this look is the PlayStation look, and we had to keep that."

Lead architect Mark Cerny previously revealed that the DualShock 4 controller went through several prototypes, including one that sensed players' stress through sweaty hands. PlayStation 4 will support up to four controllers at the same time, while the Xbox One will support up to eight controllers at once.

    TL;DR

Sony beta tested xbox-styled analog. People said they really liked this. decided to stick with old design because "hur dur playstation DNA"

i have no problem with the current layout. im sick of people comparing the two controllers and bitching about what one is superior. my brother recently switched from 360 to ps3. he wasnt used to the ds3 so he went out and bought a controller like the 360 format.

They probably kept the controller basically the same, because after running the numbers. It was probably just cheaper to keep the same style. You can tell one of Sony's intent was to produce a console at a lower price point than MS. Building a controller from scratch wouldn't have accomplished that. Nintendo is probably the only console manufacture who makes a new design for a controller for every generation.

it's better to innovate than stick with the same design

I honestly couldn't play a shooter with the left stick above the D-pad. It felt very awkward whenever I was running, aiming. My reaction time was far less responsive with that as compared to playing with a DS3. Glad they didn't change the format of the controller. If people want that type of controller, then those 3rd party type/afterglow controllers are good options.

PS4 is only gonna support 4 controllers and Xbone supports 8, WTF? that's stupid since the PS3 supports 7, and 360 supports 4.

We are in the internet age. Who here actually bothers playing co-op with friends using 4 controllers? let alone 8? What game actually supports 8 player co-op? And I don't really see how the xbone supports 8 controllers when they're shoving kinect down our throats. Disappointing nonetheless.

    HURR DURR "shooter teams"

That's the only game where the controller has ever felt comfortable anyway.

So you're going to sit there and honestly say that if the DS4 was redesigned to be similar to the xbox controller, you would call it innovating?

Nah, you would just say they copied off someone else.

I'm glad they didn't, the XB layout is not compatible with my hands.

Why didn't you mention Sony also tried to "copy" the Wii U Gamepad?

Sony experimented with a touchscreen but decided that was shit too because gamers really don't like looking down. So they went with a touchpad instead.

I think it'd be interesting if Sony offered multiple controllers for the PS4. A DualShock 4 as standard and for those who prefer an Xbox controller they could have something like that as well. Personally, I much prefer the DualShock over any other controller and I'm glad they decided to improve on what I believe is the greatest controller ever made, but it'd be nice for those who prefer another controller layout to have a quality first party option instead of having to rely on generally shitty third party controllers.

Why does the ps4 only support 4 controllers? The ps3 supports 7! Why would they make it less

How many times did you play a PS3 game with 6 other people? That's why the PS4 supports 4 controllers.

Exactly my point. When there are hundreds of games that support 7 people at the same time it might be worth including in your console, when it is one dead series that supported it, you have no reason to include it.
