I haven't swapped mine out, but I did read somewhere that you had to format it to the PS4 before the PS4 would recognize it.

    ^ This.

Format the drive and the PS4 should recognize it right away.

I didn't see an option for that. It wants me to update to 1.5 via usb. When I do that it say a serious issue occurs and it gives a code.

Don't call Sony, you're using an unsupported HDD. This one's on you to figure out.

Put the original HDD you got with the PS4 back in, then run the 1.5 update. THEN install the new HDD.

Your problem *might* also be that it's SSD. Not sure why you've gone that path, the performance benefits will be modest at best and as you've found out, there's likely to be hardware compatibility issues.

IGN have a PS4 running with an SSD, so there shouldn't be any problems there. As has been said, format the drive before installing it. There is an abundance of guides on this very issue all over the web, so I suggest you go find one

The error code is why I'm suspicious about the HDD compatibility. There were similar issues with the PS3 and third-party HDDs.

I'd still go with the original HDD as a starting point. Does the PS4 have a Recovery Menu?

Just figured out that I was using the wrong update. I was using the 300mb file when I need to use the 800mb file. I missed the fine print on the Sony website. Everything is all good now. Btw after the instal I had over 800mb free.
