External Hard Drives - What are the facts?

so before the PS4 came out, they were saying you couldn't use an external HDD to get more space, but does this mean you can no longer connect an external HDD to the console and run video files from it?

after they said this, someone on the comments on another site said something like "so what, the PS3 and 360 didn't either" what's he on about?

also on vids of the HDD being upgraded the guy clearly has a USB stick plugged in for the update, how does that differ from external HDDs?

if we can't use externals, how are we meant to backup our PS4s, if we're swapping the HDD?

Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on PS4?
No, this feature is not supported on PS4.
The only reason you're able to read the information off a USB stick is because it has an update file tailored to the PS4 OS, where as media and other data isn't recognisable by the OS, at least not yet.

Sony has stated they're looking into adding those types of features later (so far I only know of MP3 playback being confirmed), yet they have launched with a very bare-bones OS. They even admit to this when talking about MP3/DNLA support - it's not that it was removed, they simply had other priorities to get to for launch.

The PS3 OS changed drastically over the years, so do not expect what the PS4 is today to remain for long.

You could connect an External HDD to the PS3 but you couldn't actively save to and pull saves off of it. The External HDD were for backup data for the PS3 game data which was useless after PS+ and the Cloud Storage.
