Destiny Development/Advert Budget is $500 Million

Activision places $500 million bet on its next blockbuster franchise | Reuters

(Reuters) - Activision Blizzard Inc intends to spend $500 million developing and promoting "Destiny," potentially breaking industry records as it seeks to build the sci-fi role-playing videogame into its next multibillion-dollar franchise.

CEO Bobby Kotick revealed the number, which dwarfs Hollywood spending on some of its biggest firms, during the Milken conference in Los Angeles last week. A company spokesperson said on Monday the number was accurate but also included marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and other costs.

good fucking lord activision has gone batshit

GTA V budget was 265 Mil, for comparison.

Given that Destiny has a planned lifespan of a decade, that's really not much money at all - $50 mill a year.

Apparently this is what bungie said earlier about the development on destiny

This is a real operation. We've got shifts that are working 12 hours a day, seven days a week, and within a couple of weeks, there will be people operating our data operations center 24 hours a day, seven days a week - they'll never leave - for the next 10 years. There is a whole team of people who work shifts no matter what, because that's the kind of world we're building. But there will be something new to do every single day and that's cool to think about from a planning perspective. We have the time to do it right. We have a programming chart, which essentially says one thing: there's going to be something new to do every single day inside of Destiny from the moment players light it up for the first time.

aka Bungie is smoking crack. the most high class potent kind.

How does a single fps game have a planned lifespan of 10 years? Or are they saying there will be sequel after sequel?

Fairly confident they meant it as a franchise, in the same way Ubidoobisoft is planning for Watch Dogs.

    WoW Styled i guess.

Base game released, major expansions released every few years with major content patches advancing plot to the next expansion.

Bungie is super secret about their shit till they are ready. Judging their game right now based on trailers and info is seriously too early right now.

Bungie also said each planet in the game that is playable is the size of Halo Reach's entire SP Campaign.

To summarize what Ps360 just said, it means the game will have a ton of post-launch support. How much and how often is anybody's guess, but Bungie thinks it'll be enough to make the game last 10 years without getting extrmeley repetitive.

I wonder what the total size (in GBs) of the game will be by the time its life is over if it does get major expansions every year or so. That standard 500GB HDD will shrink to nothing quickly.

Reach didn't have a very long campaign, but yes, that's rather big for an FPS.

If it is just like WoW, most of the gameworld will be on their servers, not on your HDD
