pr-owned is fine for a game. I`ve traded in controllers before because they dont work, maybe the X button or a shoulder button and they take it! Fulltrade! I will NEVER buy used hardware again. games on the other hand, well thats different, as long as there isnt an online activation code thats used up
For some, sure. For me? Uh uh. I don't want someone else's problems. Though, it goes both ways. It's like buying a used car. Let's say you go for a 1992 Honda Accord. They look the same on the outside, same mileage, etc., but one was taken well care of and the other had the piss driven out of it.
Great news for sure, just not for me.

A model or two down the track, I agree. I own three second-hand Slims and a 3DS XL that I bought from EB Games and they've all been flawless, which says something about their hardware policy. But I'd be hard pressed to buy a launch model second-hand.
We need a year or two to identify any major manufacturing faults in launch models that tend to be fixed in subsequent iterations, such as the accursed YLoD. I don't know anyone who still has an original, untouched Fatty in good working order. I still own one, but it's a refurb from Sony.
the problem is theres too much dust inside it so it overheats. im afraid of opening the thing.
My guess is you're a pretty light user, so it should still be working. But for anyone who uses it a few times a week, even if it's just to watch movies (e.g my father-in-law), they're either toast or on the way out. If yours ever shuts down from overheating, that's a bad sign.
Opening it is not a problem. I've stripped down a couple of Fats and Slims maybe a dozen or two times and the worst I've done is partially strip the head of a screw. They're just like LEGO...the connectors only fit in one slot.
