Developers of Hotline Miami 2 tells Australians to pirate the game because it was banned

Hotline Miami 2 developer to censored Australians: “Just pirate it” | Ars Technica

Following the Australian Classification Board's recent decision to refuse classification to Hotline Miami 2, effectively barring the game from sale in the country, designer Jonatan Söderström has a piece of advice for people affected by the decision: "Just pirate it!"
Söderström's suggestion came in response to an e-mail from a concerned Hotline Miami fan, who asked if there was a way for him to obtain and pay for the game given the board's decision. "If it ends up being not released in Australia, just pirate it after release," Söderström wrote in reply. "No need to send us any money, just enjoy the game!"

The response was subsequently screencapped, posted to reddit, and confirmed as authentic by representatives of Devolver Digital. "He’s said similar things in the past and yes, I can confirm he wants people to enjoy the game," a Devolver Digital PR rep told Ars. "That was him," Devolver tweeted by way of further confirmation through the fictional Fork Parker CFO account.

This isn't the first case of a developer explicitly encouraging people to "pirate" a game for one reason or another. In 2013, developer Patrick Klug seeded an altered version of his Game Dev Tycoon to many torrent sites, forcing would be pirates to play a version in which their in-game studio inevitably fails because of... piracy. Developer Sos Sosowski used The Pirate Bay as a promotional vehicle for his game McPixel back in 2012, and dozens of indie game creators got together last year to distribute "The Pirate Bay Bundle" of 101 free games via torrent.

Still, a developer suggesting piracy as a way for potential players to get around government restrictions on a game's regional sales is relatively unique, as far as we can tell. One thing's for sure: we'll at least be able to avoid endless debates on piracy's effect on "lost sales" among Australians this time around.

Or you could buy it from a UK or US Steam, PSN or XBL account. But I suppose that'd be morally objectionable to bypass local censorship law instead of a criminal act . It's not illegal to own unclassified games in Australia, it's just illegal to sell them in Australia.

This has been totally blown out of proportion. The dev responded to one email telling one guy to just pirate it if he couldn't obtain it legally because he lives where he does. Now everyone's losing their shit thinking it's great to pirate games. Calm the fuck down guys.

This is obviously the best route. I would highly suggest it too since the game will most likely be amazing like the first one. 10/10 must have.

The Game Company publishing it also confirmed thats what the devs want.

no one said it was good to pirate games and to not buy devs, but anti-consumerism in australia did that.

I love how they just told their Australian fans to pirate the game. Hotline Miami 2 is going to be GOAT, just like how the 1st one is.

I think this is a statement against censorship rather than support of piracy.

At the end of the day, every dev wants to ensure their game makes its money... Otherwise they wouldn't be bothering in the first place. If you read what he said, I take it as "this censorship is hurting the games industry as a whole, better to subvert this censorship for the greater good than protect my self-interests"
Gauss's Piracy Uncertainty Principle: When you pirate a game, that act inherently changes the results of what is to come after your pirating. You can't make any statement with any certainty regarding what would have happened had you not pirated the game.

    Gauss's Rating Rationale:
0-1: A game whose very existence is abhorrent to all things creative and intelligent.
2-4: A just plain bad game.
5-6: A game that has alot of mistakes, but is atleast playable and has some enjoyable sections. Good for a rent.
7: An average game, should be played at some point
8: A good game, should buy at some point
    9: A great game, day-one purchase
10: A game that goes above and beyond the generation, its transcendent.
