a crack wont break the ps3, but then again it might not play the disk, so it could just be useless.

I've had that happen to me twice with two of my games. It won't break your PS3 if you put it in, it just won't read the disc so you will need to get a new disc unfortunatley. My guess as to why it broke and with mine too is because of the thing in the case that holds the disc in place which if you are constantly pushing the disc in and out all the time will cause cracks that go along the center of the disc which is the important part of the disc as it is where all the stuff is stored (I think) so the best way to avoid that is put the disc inside the manual or get a disc pouch which have those slip cases and store your games in there.

BTW I've completed MGS collection so am not worry again about this game :p
