Nintendo's Wii U will not have universal*achievements | Polygon
Nintendo's Wii U will not have a universal achievement system across all its games akin to the Xbox 360's Achievements system or the PlayStation 3's Trophy system, the creative director and co-founder of Scribblenauts development studio 5TH Cell said in a post on NeoGaf.
Posting to the popular video game message board, Jeremiah Slaczka said that the Wii U does not have system-wide accomplishments. Rather, it is up to the developers to decide whether they wish to implement their own system.
"Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of 'Global Starite Shards' which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren't area specific," he said.
The Wii U will release in North America on Nov. 18.
good, now it can be about playing the actual games instead of a treasure hunt.

well no I'm DEFINITELY not buying it. Then again, maybe it's a step in teh right direction to get people back to playing games that are GOOD and not just play anything ot get ACHIEVMENTS/TROPHIES. I mean I played YARIS. 5 year ago me would NEVER play YARIS.

Now I KNOW i'm not buying this. Ugh, Nintendo. Really? REALLY?!?!?! First you tell me I need a day one patch to play Wii games, then you tell me that you're gonna turn my console off if I have to go to the bathroom, then you're going to tell me there's no universal achievement system. Nintendo is Nintendead to me!

Damn, and we were all hoping PS360 would leave this site and go start WiiUShinyMarioHeadMedals.com

everyone brace yourself but for once i actually agree with ps360. trophies have ruined gaming in general. you know it's bad when you ask some one how good a game is and they comment on the difficulty of the trophies first thing. i don't care one bit about trophies. i want to play a fun game hard trophies or not...or if it don't even have trophies all the better. anyone who says they are not buying a wii u just because it won't have a trophy/achievement system is a prime example of what i'm talking about when i say gamers have been ruined.

I respectfully disagree. I finish more games than ever thanks to achievement systems. They allow me to set goals, track progress and log my gaming history...nothing more, nothing less.
I also buy a lot more games thanks to trophies. Multiply that by the number of trophy / cheevo hunters out there and the fact that they're gaming advocates for their friends...that can only be a good thing for the industry.
Without a cheevo system, Nintendo's not going to get more money out of me than the bare necessities. Achievements engender system loyalty - there's no reason to make the switch now for 360 and PS3 gamers.
This just goes to show they're still a casual, kiddy-oriented, shovelware company. That's fine, but it's not how they were positioning the Wii U and they've failed to capitalise on the next-generation lead they've been singing and dancing about.

Yeah I agree with some above, there are quite a few disadvantages to a trophy/achievement system and I'm fine without one for Wii-U.

Total Awards: 4No one's forcing you to play for the trophies. You can play however you want.

Total Awards: 4While I think that Trophies and Achievements are definitely far too important to some people, they add a lot to the game. They make you play in ways you might not have before, find hidden secrets, or just provide a laugh.
Nintendo has always been about light-hearted casual gaming, and this just reinforces that.

Refusing to buy a system because it doesn't have trophies/achievements? I fail to see the logic in that.
I mean what made you buy a PS3 in the first place? After all it didn't institute a trophy system until a few years into it's life cycle?

Total Awards: 10This is refreshing. I'll probably have a Wii U by the end of the year.

you are one of the few that uses trophies the way they are ment to be used. i'm getting so sick and tired of asking people how a game is and the first fucking thing they talk about is trophies. i want to know stuff like does it have a good story, does it control well, how are the camera angles, what's the replay value. stuff like that bro. and i'm tired of people wanting to pass on good quality games because it has hard trophies or only playing shit games because they are easy plats. i mean that's their business but that's why i say gamers have been ruined by trophies. and if game developers offered more in game rewards like costumes, weapons, upgrades, characters, and extras like that then i would gladly play a game in the same way as if i were trying to get plat. because i would rather put time into a game and get all those extras than get a worthless plat. hope i made some sense of this bro

Total Awards: 9I don't disagree with that - some gamers see achievement systems as a pissing contest. I've never been one to piss on my own shoes, so leaderboards mean nothing, but they do mean something to others and I'm not about to begrudge how other gamers choose to play.
Regardless of either of our positions, it just goes to show that cheevos sell games. If Nintendo was targeting hardcore gamers, they NEED a system-wide achievement system. Without one, they've already given up the core gamer crowd to MS and Sony, which doesn't bode well for third-party support for the Wii U, nor for system longevity.

Total Awards: 6Eh, it doesn't bother me. I'm not buying one, but if I was, it wouldn't thwart my purchase.

Meh.
The PS3 not having trophies wouldn't be the end of the world either. At least for me. They're nice to have, but I never take priority in getting trophies if I don't feel like playing the game anymore.
That said, I probably won't get a Wii U anyway because I STILL don't fully understand it.

Total Awards: 8Well this made my day. I was playing Madden 09 the other day and someone on my friend list asked does it have trophies? I said no and he replied with "why are you playing it?" I haven't responded but I did delete and block him. Wii U seems to be great but to not think about trophies would be great. If the games are cheaper then am definitely buying one.
