That's really what separates New Super Mario Bros. U from its "New" predecessors: It adds something to the Mario formula. It's exciting and full of inventive ideas. Until now, the New Super Mario Bros. games have been a fun but mostly mindless reminder of how great Mario was back on the NES or SNES.

New Super Mario Bros. U actually feels like it's from that era. It's where the series would have gone next if the transition to 3D had never happened, and it feels great to be back on that track.

This final view of a trinket-covered Nintendo Land is a metaphor for the game. It's massive, but disposable; grotesque, yet striking; commodified, but affecting. Not everything in Nintendo Land works, but what it does well, no one else is even trying.

I'm also describing Nintendo itself.

I played Nintendo Land surrounded by two dozen co-workers at Vox Media's video studio. Most had never heard of the Wii U, and were perplexed and a little put off by the GamePad controller. They'd apologize for walking in front of the TV only to realize I'd been lost in the tablet's screen for the past hour.

Most of them didn't understand how the game or the console worked until I booted "Luigi's Ghost Mansion." Suddenly, it clicked. Everyone was interested and enjoying themselves. They began talking about Nintendo and their favorite characters, and wondered what the hell this weird little machine was. They were in Nintendo Land, some of them for the first time in decades. It may not be the most magical place on Earth, but Nintendo Land is definitely the most magical place on the Wii U.

That is very true. It may not be as creative as I want them to be (because they've done this game a good few times now), but Mario is a classic and always contain a few hours of nice entertainment.

I'm still a bit more skeptical about that Nintendoland... kinda seems like a standard mini-game collection type of game to me. It's probably fun, it just doesn't look mindblowing in anyway to me. I'm still not totally impressed with the WiiU lineup, but Nintendo can still change that at any day now. I still hope that the WiiU becomes a success.

Glad to see to WiiU is getting some decent launch titles. Everyone is still skeptical about this system, but its good to see that some high quality games can be developed on it

Nintendo land is ment to teach the user about how the Wii U works while using nintendo ips. it's a great way to bring in people who don't know about it. Not to mention the games are fun as hell.

Do you know how to read, or did you just stumble into the Nintendo section of this website on accident? Believe it or not, some people actually play more than just the PlayStation, hence the reason we have sections for Nintendo, Microsoft and PC, so why shouldn't Nintendo game reviews be posted in the Nintendo section?

And on topic, I view Mario almost the same way I look at Call of Duty. The games (to me) are always fun even if they offer very little different from the previous versions. I think Rayman looks to be a much better platformer than Mario though.

Rayman is the superior platformer but Mario is always fun.

I think it is ok to post in the Nintendo section as people do like Nintendo stuff too i understand but being on a PS3 site you should spend more time in the actual PS3 sections or this website isn't really the right place for you.

And not to just bash Sony all the time as that just gives you a really bad reputation and people won't like you as we all like Sony here.

Really, reallllyyyy tempted to pick a wii u up. I never picked a wii up so if I did I could play some wii games as well. Just got to avoid Metroid other M. Metroid trilogy on the other hand...

i actually didn't buy the trilogy because i owned all three (I regret it to hell because of the massive collector value it has now)

Still got Prime 1 on the gamecube...might just have to dust my gamecube off instead for the time being.
