PS4 May Get Backwards Compatibility with PS1/PS2 Titles

Industry insider and tipster Ahsan Rasheed has revealed via his Twitter that the PS4 may get backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 titles in the near future. Additionally, there will be native 1080p rendering for select titles.

    Be excited: 1. Local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p rendering for select titles. 2. Bluray+Media Player updates— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
By all accounts, Rasheed is known to be pretty accurate when it comes to the information he's leaked in the past. So while there's a strong possibility that the information is true, Sony has not released any official comments. There's speculation that this functionality may coincide with the launch of the PlayStation Now service, which will allow the streaming of PS3 titles to your devices.

In addition to providing backwards compatibility, future updates will provide bluray and Media Player enhancements.

Isn't backwards comp a hardware thing? Why does it seem like they are talking software-wise?

You shut your mouth!!! That would be a nice little addition and would warrant a purchase from me. Sure, I still have my old systems, but I like being able to have the option.

No, there are lot's of software emulators out there, ranging from Commodore 64. All you need is a powerfull enough hardware to run it on.

Didn't Sony patent something that makes it possible to add trophy support to PS1 games, a while back.

    I hope they include this.

I'd rather PS3 games to be backwards compatibility now. I have so many games for PS3 that I'd like to play again even when I get a PS4.

Ofcourse I'll keep my PS3 but it would be more convenient and take up less space to just be able to put the discs in a PS4

I'm interested in this solely because the article states the BC will be 'local', meaning no streaming/cloud-based service is involved.

But only streaming for PS3 games? Why can't it just be done in the same way PS1/2 games would be, not very convienient for people who may have sold their PS3's to afford a PS4/games...

Interesting, but I have a PS3 phatboi, I'm able to play PS1 games on it, yet I haven't done so for a couple of years now.

The idea that trophy support could be added to some PS1/2 games has been patented got my attention. A Crash Bandicoot yes please!

I hope it isn't just for the U.S. version of the PS4.
