[top]Introduction

Drinkbox studios has been proving itself as one of the best indie developers as of late. They started out with their 2-d platformer on PS3, Tales From Space: About a Blob and then perfected the formula and PS Vita with Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack. Now they have moved out of that series and have created a new game. Guacamelee. This game is very different from the Tales From Space games and is yet another hit from the up and coming developer.

Guacamelee is a 2-D metroidvania sidescroller meaning that the game takes inspiration from the likes of Castlevania and Metroid. So in other words you be exploring a large "labyrinth" type area with many areas blocked off. Throughout the game you will find new abilities that can let you access these new areas to find more abilities to progress further etc. The game's protagonist is a luchador failure who lives alone in his peaceful town. The game takes place on Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) which is a Spanish holiday in which citizens honor their family and friends that have fallen by using sugar skulls and marigolds. On this day the evil Calaca returns from the world of the dead and kills Juan while kipnapping his one true love. Now Juan must come back from the dead and save his beloved.

The game has a really comedic mood like past Drinkbox games to it and you will constantly encounter Easter Eggs to other video games (especially Metroid), movies, comic books and internet memes. The combat system has some very unique taste to it and you will probably spend a lot of time exploring the map of this elaborate game and finding all of the hidden secrets. I hope you have fun with the game. Enjoy the guide

[top]Trophies

[top]
Guacamelee! Platinum Trophy
Your Luchador mask is in the mail.

The platinum trophy will be earned after punching, suplexing and headbutting your way through the rest of the trophies.

[top]
Viva La Ressureccion
Become a Luchador

This is a story related trophy and cannot be missed

This is right at the beginning of the game. You will start out by waking up and going to a church where a local citizen is in need of help. Then the girl of Juan's dreams walks in and asks for help over at her place. When you arrive Calaca, the game's antagonist will be introduced. He will kill Juan with ease and you will be sent to the world of the dead. Here you will find a statue of the great luchador before you. Take the mask and put it on. The trophy will pop.

[top]
We built this city on Guac and Roll
Discover Santa Luchita

This is a story related trophy and cannot be missed

Santa Luchita is a large town in the middle of the map and is sort of the midpoint of the whole game's map. There are numerous sidequests to be done here. You will start your venture here after leaving Pueblucho. You will then have to make your way through the Forest del Chivo. After your travels, you will arrive in the peaceful town and the trophy will be yours.

[top]
That's one big Gato Frito
Kill the Alebrije.

This is a story related trophy and cannot be missed

You will encounter the Alebrije for the first time towards the beginning of the game. He is impossible to miss. Just look for the giant colorful beast. Now this is not when you kill him. You will do that later. Encounter X'tabay a couple of times and you will climb up into an area. The fight against Alebrije is more so like a chase sequence. Just keep running to the right and make sure he does not catch up to you. Remember to roll to avoid oncoming skeletons. At the end of the chase sequence you will kill the Alebrije like Mario would kill Bowser and get the trophy.

[top]
Cock of the Walk
Defeat an enemy as a chicken

This is a story related trophy and cannot be missed.

So to get this trophy you will first have to turn into a chicken. This will happen after you find your damsel in distress locked up in cage with Calaca standing right above her. Calaca will then turn you into a chicken (because for some reason a chicken is a metaphor for what Calaca sees you as) and he will also steal your love. Now as a chicken you must work your way through the small tunnels in the walls until you come to enemies that you must fight in order to progress. It isn't hard at all, it will just take awhile. Peck at the enemy to death until they drop dead and the trophy is yours.

[top]
X'tabay - Bye
Redeem X'tabay

This is a story related trophy and cannot be missed

This is the first boss fight in the game. Once you are turned into a chicken by Calaca you will meet a giant mystery chicken who will tell you that you must find X'tabay because she can help you. You will find her in Sanata Luchita in the dead world. Manuever to the basement of her house and it will seem as though she wants to help you. Oops she tricked you. It turns out she actually wants to kill you. Now the fight will begin. X'tabay is a fairly easy boss and has three main stages.

In the first stage she will be floating in the air and throwing projectiles at you that come out of her in a circle. Wait for her to shoot her projectiles and then dodge them. Next uppercut her and give her a few punches as well. Maybe even bodyslam her if you are quick enough. At some point throughout the first stage she will float to the top of the screen and turn the ground into spikes and a platform will appear above you. Make sure to jump onto the platform that appears to avoid being hurt. Continue to do this and she will eventually fall to the ground. Now it's time for stage 2.....

The second stage is a little bit harder. Now she will be on the ground for the rest of the fight. She has three main attacks. The first is that a cloud will appear above her head and rain of death will pore down upon her. The second is she will just whip a flame at you. And lastly she will jump up a little in the air and slam on the ground. All three of these are easy to avoid. The best idea for this fight is to wait until she attacks and then roll over to X'tabay and perform a few attacks on her. Don;t forget to body slam when you can. She also teleports around so make sure that she doesn't end up behind Juan and pull off an attack.

Okay stage three is probably the most difficult part, but is still very doable. It will start out with two X'tabay's on the screen. One will have a green shield and the other a red. They both have the same three attacks as the last stage so the battle is basically twice as deadly. It doesn't really matter which one you start out with. The red one needs to be uppercutted to take away it's shield and the green must be frog slammed to take away it's shield. Try to focus on one at a time because if you leave one untouched for too long it will get it's shield back. Neither of them have that much health so once one is down the other is easy. After you defeat those two a third X'tabay will appear. This one will have a yellow shield. The yellow shield can only be taken away by performing a headbutt. After taking away the shield just beat down on her for a little while and you will have defeated X'tabay.

The trophy will now be yours.

[top]
Snuffed Out
Defeat Flame Face

This is a story related trophy and cannot be missed

Flame Face is the second boss you will meet in the game. You will learn that Calaca is planning to sacrifice your girlfriend atop a very large mountain. You will meet Flame Face once while in this area and lucky for you, he is out of ammo. When you reach the top of the mountain, Calaca and Flame Face will both be standing there. Calaca will once again turn you into a chicken and tells the pestering Flame Face that he can deal with you. To Flame Face's surprise, you have the ability to turn back into a human. The fiery bandit will try to tell you his story, but lets face it, who cares? So Juan will just knock him down and now the fight begins.

Flame Face will take a few more tries than the previous boss, but he is still very manageable. Also unlike the previous boss, he does not have phases. Usually the first attack he will do is he goes up top and rains bullets down on you. This is easy to avoid simply be pressing the dodge button to maneuver through all of the shots. Sometimes he will also fill the room with lava. Change dimensions to stop yourself from being burned to death.

His ground moves are a little bit more difficult. Probably the most annoying one is when he forms into a ball and charges across the screen at you. You need to get the timing down right and jump over it to avoid hitting you. Sometimes when he comes out of this roll he will pull out his revolver and shoot at you. The bullet comes fast so be ready to jump. After he shoots his pistol is a fantastic time to attack him. The best things to do is to hit him in the air and try to get a combo on him. His health bar is up in the top and it falls rather quickly.

After defeating him he will want to be left alone in his final moments with his alcohol. The trophy is now yours.

[top]
Wheeee
Teleport through an Olmec head

The Olmec heads are set throughout the game and act as fast travel points. Most likely you will just run into them without even trying and will probably be using them a lot. You will need to find at least two to be able to teleport from one place to another. Once you have found two go up to one and talk to it. It will ask you if you want to fast travel. Select yes and then choose an Olmec head that you have already discovered on your map. Once you have selected one you will be fast traveled and the trophy will be yours.

Boom-Shack-Calaca
Defeat Calaca

This is it. The final battle against Calaca. You have beaten all of his minions, chasing him own to finally face him at the top of an ancient temple. You reach the top and see your girlfriend tied down. Her platform will raise and then the fight will begin. Calaca is a very dangerous foe and the hardest fight in the game. He has two main stages, the 1st being fairly simple while the 2nd being quite the challenge.

Okay so here is the first stage. This is just Calaca's normal old self. He will be teleporting around the place like a madman. He will attack as soon as he appears. Just keep rolling around the floor and you should be fine, expect when he jumps from the ceiling, you should jump in the air to avoid that attack. After he attacks hit him with whatever attack cancels out the colored shield that is currently surrounding him. That is really all you can. There isn't any time to avoid, you have to get ready for the next attack. This stage is pretty easy and won;t take more than a couple of tries just to merely get the timing down right.

Good work! You've beaten Cala-...... oh wait nevermind the ritual just completed. Now he is a giant fire demon. Okay let's begin stage 2...

Okay this will probably take you a lot of tries. All of his attacks take down a lot of health and he has a shield that is constantly changing. Just learn his attack patterns and you can get this. You are going to want to wait after every single one of his attacks except for the one where he spits those blue balls at you. After this attack is when you go in for the hit. Destroy his shield and you should be able to get two cycles of attacks in before he goes after you again. Here are some other attacks he does and ways to dodge them.
  • When he stands up tall this means he is about to slam the ground. Just jump in the air before he hits to avoid this.
  • Calaca will back up occasionally. This means he is about to breath a stream of fire across the screen. Simply duck down to avoid getting hit by this devastating attack.
  • Sometimes you will see lines appear on the screen. Calaca will send two pillars of fire in a set direction. Standing in the middle is always a sure way of staying safe.
Following these rules will help you defeat Calaca. After you beat him your journey will finally be over and trophy will pop. Now the area is free for you to explore.

[top]
Lore Master
Complete All Side Quests

There are a total of seven side quests. Each one is listed up above in the trophy guide so find the one you are missing and get them done. The side mission usually take no longer than a minute or two of your time and are mostly found in Santa Luchita.

[top]
Cleaned Out
Buy all the items in the shop

This is not a hard trophy, once you know the strategy. There are all sorts of powerups in the store like increasing your health or buying new moves. Most likely you will have enough or almost enough money by the end of the game, but if not use the strategy for The Never Ending Combo. Keep hitting the enemy until you start to earn money. Every cycle of 300 hit combos nets you some serious cash. Rinse and repeat to gain your trophy.

[top]
The Never Ending Combo
Achieve a 300 Hit combo

There is an easy way to get this trophy. Go up to any enemy with a shield but DON'T break their shield. Keep hitting them to fill up your combo. This will earn you money as well so you could use it to grind Cleaned Out and Shopaholic. Here is a helpful video:

Tip from Faust
If you miss the fight suggested for The Never Ending Combo , you have another chance during the final boss fight. When Calaca releases to stage 2, keep whaling on him with combo - all his attacks are clearly telegraphed and easy to avoid. Wait till you get at least 100 hits before destroying his shields, just in case.

[top]
Up Close and Personal
Defeat Calaca using only melee attacks

The Boom-Shack-Calaca guide describes how to beat him this way so refer to that.

[top]
That was Hard Mode?
Defeat the game on Hard mode

This is it. Hard mode. The enemies are faster and tougher than ever now. Just keep dodging attacks while being patient and wait for opening. By far the hardest part will be the boss battles so here is a walkthrough on how to beat each one. I'm not going to go crazy in depth on them seeing that you can already read the basics in other places in the guide, but the fights do change a little bit so here you go.

Collect every chest in the game

Treasure chests are found all throughout the game. They contain upgrades like hearts and stamina and gold coins to buy stuff from the shops. The chests are mostly hidden in plain sight and none are too hard to find. Often times if you see a colored block, there is a treasure chest hiding around behind it somewhere. Others can only be obtained by traversing challenging obstacles. Here are video guides for each area of the game. Credit to the videos goes to MainGameProduction.

El Savior
Access the alternate ending (collect all orbs)

There are a total of six orbs hidden throughout the game. These are the hardest collectibles to find and one of them can only be found after beating the final boss. They are often hidden behind portals and are often extremely complicated to get to at times. Here is the location of all of the orbs.

Orb 1- This orb is found in Juan's home where you start out at in the very beginning of the game. You must have the ability to turn into a chicken unlocked. Walk into his house and go through a little space that only a chicken can crawl through while switching dimensions and you will come to an area with some hunched over dude warning you about a maze up ahead. The maze is quite large and it requires a little bit of time to traverse to. Must diverging paths will have a dead end right away and won't make you travel aimlessly forever. When you have completed the maze you will find a portal to some odd place. Simply walk to the right and you will get the first orb.

Orb 2- This one can be found at the top of the Tree of Life through a secret way up. Go through the entire tree until you eventually fall straight down on the left. You will see a blue block covering up an entrance right above you. Break the block by using your wall glide. Jump up where the wall was blocking and run up the wall to the very top of the tree. You will reach an area called the Branches. This is where is gets hard. You must get through difficult platforming stages to make it to the very top. Most will take probably around 10-20 tries to complete. When you reach the top you will find a sarcastic chicken and a portal. Go through the portal and you will find the next orb.

Orb 3- This orb is found in an area called the Caverna del Pollo. This can be reached by going to the very bottom right of Santa Luchita. In this place you must make your way through three challenges. Each challenge has ten waves of enemies. None of them are too hard if you are going for this after you have beaten the game. When you beat the third challenge you will drop down onto a cliff with a portal. Go through it to find yet another orb.

Orb 4- The next one can be found in the Sierra Mountains. This one is a little hard to explain, but I'll do my best. Towards the beginning you will come to an area with cacti throwing things at you. Go over to the wall on the left and wall glide to the right out of that mountain. If you did it correctly you should fly straight to a platform with a portal on it. Go through the portal and get the next orb.

Orb 5- This next one will require a lot of speed. Go to the Forest del Chivo and find the skull switch underneath a hill to the upper right of the area. Hit the switch and then exit to the left. Climb up the mountain that you were just under and glide off the higher step to the left. You will hit a block with spikes ontop of it. If you did it fast enough you will fall down into an area with dozens of chickens and another portal. Go through the portal to find the orb.

Orb 6- This orb will automatically be obtained after beating the final boss.
