[top]Tips & Strategies

Most enemies can be launched into the air by your hits. Hit them with upward strikes and dash strikes to keep them airborne for as long as possible. They are totally vulnerable while they are airborne and can't hit you back!

Your character is not very durable and can quickly die if you are caught with your guard down for too long. Blocking will negate all damage but will drain your weapon's Spirit Power so use it sparingly! Rolling around is a great way to avoid damage but you will have to execute it with pinpoint accuracy if you want to avoid getting hit.

Avatar Form is what makes Okoi's fighting style unique. It is incredibly powerful but only lasts for a few moments and has a decent recharge time. Learning how to use this devastating ability will help you overcome any obstacle in this DLC.

Just enjoy the game and get used to playing as the new character. This story is about 1/3 the size of the stories in the main game so expect to spend around 3 hours playing through all of the acts. Before the final boss, remember to switch your game from "Legend" to "Chaos" so you can unlock Fury Mode.

Careful What You Wish For

This step is where you will spend most of your time. Head to each of Momohime's and Kisuke's bosses and defeat them. Also head to each Cave of Evil and clear it. Don't forget to kill at least one boss while in Monster Cat form! The last thing to do is to replay Okoi's final boss in order to view ending #2.

Fear the Furrious Feline!
The Horror... The Horror...

Start a new save file and set the playstyle to "Fury." You just have to play through Okoi's story.

A Tiddle-ating Performance

Start a new save file and set it to "Legend." Speed run through the game. You have to complete Okoi's story in under an hour.

Careful What You Wish For
Complete the grand finale of the Fishy Tales of the Nekomata.

The story is overall pretty short. You will only have to defeat three bosses to complete the Fishy Tales of the Nekomata.

Boss #1
The first boss encounter will also serve as this DLC's tutorial. You are going to be up against The Two Assassins. They will more or less behave like ordinary samurai enemies. Break their blades with heavy attacks and then beat them down. You really shouldn't have too much trouble with this boss, especially if you thoroughly played through the main game.

Boss #2
The Haunted Mansion boss encounter is a multi-phase encounter which will put you up against several "unique" enemies.
  • Phase 1 - You want to keep moving at all times. There will be heads floating around and shooting blue orbs at you. You can kill the heads and reflect the orbs. But the real threat is up above you. There will be a creature floating within a black cloud at the top of your screen. He will periodically come out and try to grab you. You don't want to be grabbed! This is why you should be constantly moving. In addition to grabbing you, he will sometimes stick his head out of the cloud and shoot pink projectiles at you. Reflect these back at him and it will greatly damage him. You can only damage him when he appears from out of the cloud
  • Phase 2 - Your opponent will now be a raccoon. His main attack is hitting you with his large testicles. You can easily dodge/block these hits. Next, he will explode and appear inside a bell. Attack the bell from behind and once it breaks the raccoon will come out. This phase is pretty easy as long as you dodge his explosions.
  • Phase 3 - Now you will be fighting 3 enemies. The first one is a humongous head. You should target this enemy first and take it out ASAP. It is not that lethal and you can easily move out of the way of his attack. He will rise into the air and try to slam into you. Once the head is dead, focus your attention to the two butt demons. If you stay behind them they won't rush into you and you can safely damage them from here. They will also shoot pink projectiles from their butts so reflect these back into them. Once you kill one of the butt demons, the other will grow in size and his attacks will be enhanced. Take out the last enemy quickly to head into the next phase.
  • Phase 4 - This is a repeat of phase 2. Fight through the raccoon until his health bar is gone.
  • Phase 5 - You are up against two demons with large heads and long necks. Their bodies are stationary but will pose a threat to you so you should head to the extreme right of the room and fight the heads here. Hit them until they fall to the ground and get a couple hits in before they get back up. If you see the heads leave your view, then they are most likely going to breathe fire onto you so jump in the air and you will dodge it.
  • Phase 6 - The raccoon....again. But this time he has two bars of health. Just make it through this phase to beat this boss encounter.

Boss #3

Shinzaemon Shigematsu is the final boss and for the most part he is like a samurai enemy with a few extra moves. If you see his sword glowing then you should roll behind him to miss his attack entirely. Hit him with a few heavy attacks to break his blade. Take your time finding an opening because his attacks hurt a lot! Once he is defenseless, open up on him. Watch out for his kick because it is the one attack that can bypass your block. When half of his health is gone, he will call for reinforcement samurai to attack you. Chop these guys up and get back onto Shinzaemon. His speed will greatly increase once his health reaches its last bar. He will go full offense and you should go full offense too. Use magatamas to replenish your spirit energy and keep using your special attacks to defeat him.

Defeat a boss while in the Monster Cat form.

Monster Cat form is your third 'blade.' Engage a boss and beat him down until he has about half a bar of health left. Now press until you have selected your Avatar/Monster Cat form and then proceed to lay down the beating. You can only be in this form for a short time so don't waste it! You can unlock this trophy with any boss in the game so you will have many chances to earn it. I personally suggest either Blue Monk or Kurozaru because both of these fights are extremely easy.

No Pussyfooting Around!
Finish the Fishy Tales of the Nekomata in an hour or less.

Start a new save game and select "Legend." You will have to complete all three acts of the story in under an hour. What makes getting this time difficult are the lengthy boss fights and the amount of backtracking you have to do to go from boss 2 to boss 3. Saving this trophy for last will give you the opportunity to master the boss fights which will reduce the time you spend battling them. Do not go out of your way for anything.
In order to eliminate backtracking, you are going to use a Bronze Mirror to warp across a couple of regions. You will start Act 2 by exiting the first boss's portal and end up in Mikawa. Head left two zones and you will run into a shrine. Save at this shrine, and this shrine only! Acquire a Bronze Mirror from either a vendor or from enemies. After you defeat the second boss, use your Bronze Mirror and you will teleport all the way back to Mikawa and will be just a few zones away from the third boss.

Quickly make your way through this area and defeat the last boss. The trophy will unlock once the credits start rolling. Below is a log of my times:

Progress Time
Start of Act 2 :06
Start of Act 3 :34
Final Time :59

The Horror... The Horror...
Experience all of the endings for the Fishy Tales of the Nekomata.

This DLC has two endings. You must view both endings in order to unlock this trophy.

Ending #1

This ending will unlock the first time you complete the story.

Ending #2

In order to view this ending, you will need to replay the final boss fight with the Transformation Guide equipped in your equipment slot. The Transformation Guide is acquired by defeating every boss from Momohime's and Kisuke's stories. There are 16 bosses in total that you must defeat. You won't have to worry about the white barriers being in your way because they will all disappear after beating the story once.

Kisuke's Bosses Momohime's Bosses
Kurozaru Blue Monk
Giant Centipedes Wanyuudo
Torahime Yukinojo
Sayo Ippondatara
Tsuchigumo Chimera
Chigurui Bishamon Boss Demon
Dragon God Raijin
Inugami Tsunayoshi Tokugawa Fudo-Myoou
The fights are exactly the same in this DLC so you shouldn't have any trouble taking any of these bosses down. If you have forgotten where bosses are located, worry not. The map has been enhanced for this DLC and displays where bosses are located and even tells you whether you have defeated them or not. Press and go to map.

Once all 16 bosses are defeated, you will acquire the Transformation Guide. Equip it and face the final boss again. He will be more difficult this time so prepare yourself!

A Tiddle-ating Performance
Clear the finale of Fishy Tales of the Nekomata in Fury mode.

"'A Relentless test of one's ability to cheat death.' Like in life, one hit will kill. Only for the truly brave."
You will unlock Fury mode once you complete the final chapter on Chaos mode. You do not have to play the whole story on Chaos - you just need to change the difficulty from "Legend" to "Chaos" before you confront the final boss. The game will tell you that you have unlocked Fury Mode after the credits.

You need to start a new save file. Scroll past the other two difficulties and you will see "Fury." Choose it and then start your Fury Mode run. In terms of difficulty, Fury is exactly the same as Legend. The difference is that you only have 1 HP. One hit from anything will kill you so take it slow and learn your enemy's moves. When you die, you will respawn at the beginning of the zone (or outside of the portal if fighting a boss) so you will lose practically no progress.

You just need to complete the story in Fury Mode to earn this trophy. That means you don't have to do any Caves of Evil or any of the other bosses throughout the world. Defeat The Two Assassins, Haunted Mansion, and Shinzaemon Sigematsu in order to unlock this trophy. It will pop after the credits.

Fear the Furrious Feline!
Conquer all Caves of Evil with Okoi.

You have to play and clear all 16 Caves of Evil in order to unlock this trophy. These are exactly the same as the ones from the main game. What is different is your character - Okoi's play style is different from Kisuke/Momohime's so you are going to have to slightly adapt your approach. Press and go into the map menu. You can keep track of which Caves of Evil you have completed and which you still need to conquer by looking at the bottom of this menu.

Incarnation of a Hundred Shadows
Location: Yamashiro
Recommended Level: 9+
Ninjas. Lots of ninjas. They will break through your guard in the blink of an eye if you aren't careful. Cut through them and juggle them in the air with Okoi. Miike's attacks work very well against waves of enemies.

Trial of a Hundred Monks
Location: Musashi
Recommended Level: 9+
Much like the first cave, but with monks instead. Basically use the same tactics from the previous cave.

God of Pestilence
Location: Owari
Recommended Level: 16+
Okoi's special moves hurt this enemy a lot! Keep hitting him until he starts to use his charge attack or his poison cloud. Use your quickdraw whenever it is available.

Toads of Yoro Falls
Location: Mino
Recommended Level: 29+
This cave is full of toads. Stay behind them so you don't get sprayed with poison. Also be aware of where they are jumping. Quickdraw, juggling, and Okoi's special attacks are great to use in this cave.

Storm of the Kagura Tengu
Location: Totomi
Recommended Level: 23+
This cave could give you problems because the enemies constantly stay in the air. Jump up and hit the tengu with dashes and upward strikes. Okoi's aerial attack is great to use too. Don't forget to use your avatar form if you are having trouble.

Seven Samurai
Location: Mikawa
Recommended Level: 36+
As the title suggests, you are going to have to fight seven samurai in this cave. You can see their health bars at the bottom of your screen. First, you are going to want to break their swords with a heavy attack and then juggle them in the air with upward strikes and dashes. Okoi's attack will break their blades in one hit. If you can group them up, use Avatar form to deal a lot of damage at once.

Procession of the Snow Demons
Location: Hida
Recommended Level: 42+
Super easy cave. The enemy's attacks are easily reflected and they do not have much health. The Ice Maidens will also group up on their own so use dash attacks and Okoi's aerial special attack to hit many at once. Keep beating them up until you complete all five waves.

Valor in the Witching Hour
Location: Sagami
Recommended Level: 47+
First, you are going to face three Blue Monks. They are super easy as long as you stay behind them. Next you will fight the purple monster from an earlier cave. Take care of him and you will be done with this cave.

Assault of the Elite Ozaru Ninjas
Location: Iga
Recommended Level: 49+
These enemies are the same as Kisuke's first boss. You will be against four of them at once. Fighting a lone enemy was easy, but having four makes it a bit more complicated. You need to watch out for all of the ninja's shurikens and be aware of their body slams. You should try to focus on them one at a time if you can. Use avatar form early to weaken them.

Frolicking Animals
Location: Kai
Recommended Level: 50+
You have to get through a few waves of boars and pheasants in this cave. Kill the boars before they start to charge and evade the pheasants until you can land a solid hit on them. Use your quickdraw or avatar form to kill them fast.

Treachery of the Yagyuu Clan
Location: Yamato
Recommended Level: 57+
You will face waves of elite ninja in this cave. Quickdraw + special attack your way to the last wave, which will include Yukinojo, Momohime's Chapter 3 samurai boss. Pop avatar form and start attacking everyone, then finish off Yukinojo.

Giant Centipedes of Suzuka Ridge
Location: Ise
Recommended Level: 64+
You will fight the Giant Centipedes in this cave. Use the same techniques you used for Kisuke's second boss. Cut off their tails and heads and then cut off their body segments one by one.

Dragons of Heaven and Earth
Location: Suruga
Recommended Level: 71+
You have to fight two dragon bosses in this cave. Stock up on magatamas and spam your special attacks to make quick work of them and to be invulnerable to their attacks.

Hundreds of Death of the Demon Army
Location: Omi
Recommended Level: 78+
The first wave is full of imps. Slash them up and prepare for wave two. You will have to face two demons. Use a heavy attack to knock them off their feet, then follow up with an upward slash and then dash attack them. The third wave will consist of two minotaurs. They are a little tougher, but use the same tactic as on the demons and you will kill them easily. The last wave has two demons AND two minotaurs. Save your avatar form for this last wave. Spam magatamas and special attacks to weaken the enemies, then finish them off one by one using the tactics in the previous waves.

Battlefield of the Damned
Location: Shinano
Recommended Level: 85+
The first five waves will be full of undead samurai, samurai shooters, and flying ninjas. Use special attacks and quickdraws whenever you can. The last wave of the cave will have three Undead Generals in it. Another boss from Kisuke's story, use magatamas and special attack spamming to do as much damage as you can.

Night of Absolute Chaos
Location: Izu
Recommended Level: 92+
The hardest and longest cave in the game. This cave has a mixture of all of the enemies you have fought throughout your adventures in this game. Stock up on magatamas and use all of the knowledge you have acquired while playing this game to beat this cave.
