[top]Introduction

Trailer courtesy of HESTTRUBLU

AFL Live is the newest in a series of AFL games made over the last 7 years or so. For those unaware, AFL stands for Australian Rules Football and is one of most popular sports in Australia. The game was created in Australia around the late 1880's and is unique to Australia. Some other countries have amateur leagues however none compare to the grandure of the sport in Australia which is a multi-billion dollar business.

[top]Tips and Strategies

I've developed 2 key tricks which should help you get a lot of the trophies in this game.

"The Non-Legitimate Method"

A lot of the trophies in this game can be obtained while playing in an exhibition match against a human opponent. Obviously, this makes getting these trophies a lot easier than if you attempted to obtain them while playing a computer opponent.

The "Non-Legitimate Method" involves playing a human v human match and have the second player do nothing while you fulfil the requirements for the trophy. I use the term "Non-Legitimate Method" as in doing so you are effectively circumventing what I would consider to be the intent of the game. That said, I put the term in quotations, as, if the developer didn't want us to get the trophies using the method, it would have designed the game to prevent it. Frankly, I use "Non-Legitimate Methods" in most of my trophy hunting.

This method will work for most, if not all, of the "in-match" trophies. I refer to the specific methods in the trophy guide below.

The Start Trick

While playing through the premiership seasons, they're a couple of trophies which are missable if you do not fulfil certain requirements. These include defeating all teams in the season, finishing on top of the ladder and winning the premierships on the various difficulties. It would be awful if you made it to the grand final on legend after 50 hours of game play and lost. Thankfully, the game permits what I call the Start Trick. If you are, at any time, looking like you are going to lose a premiership season match which you need to win for a trophy, simply hit start and quit. You can then restart that match without any consequences.

[top]Roadmap

All difficulties are available at the start of the game and difficulty trophies stack so if you feel up to it, you can play 1 season on legend and get most of the trophies. However, the game is quite tough and you will probably need to built up your skills on the lower difficulties first. Accordingly, my proposed play through road map is as follows:

1. Play a season on amateur difficulty with 3 minute quarters and no injuries to get Amateurs' Hour. While playing through this season you should focus on getting Chas, Set for September and Got the Wood on 'em.

2. While playing through a season on amateur difficulty, you should attempt to and will also most likely pick up (through general play) 50 Metre Bomb, Poster, Slippery When Met, Storming Home, First Use, Road Trip, Even Spread, Kicked a Bag, Spoil Sport, Torpedoes Away!, Fruity, Winners (are Grinners), Downtown, Talk to the Hand, Hard Nut, End to End, The Beautiful Game and Its A Drubbing.

3. If you do not feel you are ready for legend difficulty yet, play through as season on professional difficulty with 3 minute quarters and no injuries to get The Professionals.

4. Play through a NAB Cup on legend difficulty with 20 minute quarters and extreme injuries to get Nabbed It. While playing through this NAB cup you will get Hot Streak.

5. Play through a season on legend difficulty with 20 minute quarters and extreme injuries to get Legendary. While playing through this season you should focus on getting First Class Century and may be able to get Leather Poisoning.

6. Play exhibition matches to obtain any of the "in match" trophies you didn't get through the seasons and use the "illegitimate method" to get the more difficult ones such as Attacking Pressure, Dancing With Your Sister, Shut 'em Down and Playing Tall.

7. At any time, go to the footy factory for Australian Made and Chairman of the Board, play 5 online matches for Online Player and play an offline match with a second player for No "I" in Team.

8. Play repeated matches and kick as many goals as possible for Lifetime Lagger.

[top]Trophies

[top]
Legend of the Game
Earn all trophies.

As usual, earn all the gold, silver and bronze trophies in the game to earn this shiny, time consuming and relatively difficult platinum.

[top]
50 Metre Bomb
Kick a goal from beyond the 50 metre arc.

The best way to obtain this trophy is by taking a mark outside the 50 metre boundary with your Centre Half Forward and enter "goal kicking" mode by pressing the button.

If you are having difficulty, try playing with a team with a quality Centre Half Forward, such as Hawthorn (Lance Franklin), Brisbane (Jonathan Brown), Fremantle (Matthew Pavlich) etc as they have high accuracy and kicking distance statistics. You will also find this easier if you are playing at Etihad Stadium. At Etihad the roof is always closed and therefore there is no wind.

Even if you use a quality Centre Half Forward you may not make the distance in some circumstances. Accordingly, you should hold to kick a torpedo for extra distance. You will have to adjust the accuracy significantly to score a goal when kicking a torpedo though. If you kick the goal using a torpedo from outside the 50 metre arc you will also get the Torpedo's Away! trophy.

When you kick the goal the trophy will pop.

[top]
Poster
Hit a goal post and score a behind.

You will obtain this trophy in general play of the game as you make your way though the premiership seasons.

All you have to do is simply hit the goal post when kicking for goal (in either goal shooting mode or general play). It will happen more times that you expect, so there is no real need to focus on getting this trophy specifically.

When you kick the poster the trophy will pop.

[top]
Attacking Pressure
Kick 3 goals as a direct result of free kicks from tackles in a match.

This trophy can be difficulty if you try to get it "legitimately" (i.e. against the computer opponent).

Basically, you need to earn 3 free kicks from tackles in your forward 50 during the match and then kick a goal using that free kick. Tackles are applied by holding the button when your opponent has the ball. Free kicks are only obtained from "effective tackles". "Effective tackles" generally require your opponent to have had "prior opportunity" to dispose of the ball. When you lay an "effective tackle" you will receive a free kick and the umpire will call "holding the ball".

The difficulty is that the computer, even on amateur difficulty, does not often hold the ball long enough for you to place an effective tackle and therefore obtain a "holding the ball" call from the umpire. In addition, it must be you who makes the tackle and not one of your computer controlled team mates.

The easier or "non legitimate" way of obtaining the trophy is by playing an exhibition game against a human player. You will need a second controller for this method. However, other non-controller PS3 peripherals will work including the PS3 blue ray remote control.

The method is this. Once you are in the game have one of your players score a behind. The second human player will then take a kick out from your goal square. They will have approximately 10 seconds to dispose of the ball before the umpire calls play on. Have the second human player do nothing. Once the umpire calls play on, you can run up to the player with the ball and tackle him. You will then be granted a free kick directly in front of goal. Repeat 2 more times and you will have a shiny new trophy. On kicking the third goal the trophy will pop.

[top]
Slippery When Met
Win a match in the wet.

Simply win a match in the rain. You can either play in exhibition mode and set the weather or play in season mode and eventually you will play a game in the wet.

This trophy is slightly glitched in that it does not always unlock the first time you win a match in the wet. If this occurs, simply play another match in the wet and it should unlock. If you are having trouble, try winning a match in exhibition mode as opposed to season mode. Exhibition mode seems to not suffer from the same glitches.

When you win the match the trophy will unlock.

[top]
Storming Home
Storm home to win without the opposition scoring a goal in the final quarter.

This trophy can be difficult if you attempt to obtain it "legitimately".

You need to be losing at 3 quarter time and come back to win the match without your opponent scoring a goal in the final quarter.

If you are having difficulty you can obtain the trophy by playing against a second human opponent. Again you will need a second controller for this method. However, again, other non-controller PS3 peripherals will work.

Simply have the second player kick 1 goal in the first 3 quarters. In the last quarter have the first player kick 2 goals to win the game. When you win the match the trophy will unlock.

[top]
First Use
Perform 5 taps directly to a receiver in a match.

To win a ruck contest you need to tap the stick when the ball is at its highest point. When you tap the stick you also need to tap the direction in which you want the ball to go. To obtain this trophy you need to tap the ball directly to one of your receiving players 5 times in match.

If you are having trouble you can simply play a human v human match and have the second player not press anything at the ruck contest. You will always win and eventually will tap it directly to your receivers enough times. When you tap the ball to a receiver on the fifth occasion the trophy will unlock.

Taps can be performed at the centre bounce, at a field bounce and from a boundary throw in.

[top]
Amateurs' Hour
Win a Toyota AFL 2011 Premiership Season on Amateur, no simulating.

Simply start and finish a premiership season on Amateur difficulty. You can set the injury and quarter length settings to your preference however you need to ensure that you do not simulate any of your matches and do not control any of your opponents. Doing either of these will cause the trophy to not unlock. You must also simulate all matches in which you do not play. It is only your matches which you are not permitted to simulate.

Once you have won the Grand Final the trophy will unlock.

Please note that you can quit a match at any time and restart it. This will not affect your season or your ability to earn the trophy. Accordingly, if you are losing the Grand Final with a minute to go you should quit so as to not have to replay the whole season.

While getting this trophy you should focus on also obtaining Chas, Got the Wood on 'em and Set for September.

[top]
Road Trip
Win a game with an AFL team against an interstate AFL team at their home ground.

Simply win a game against an AFL Team from another state at their home ground. This trophy appears to be glitched in that it will not unlock in season mode and must be obtained in exhibition mode. When you win the match the trophy will pop.

The teams, states and home grounds are as follows:

Victoria

Home Ground: Melbourne Cricket Ground
Teams: Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond and Hawthorn

Home Ground: Etihad Stadium
Teams: Essendon, St. Kilda, Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne

Home Ground: Skilled Stadium
Team: Geelong

South Australia

Home Ground: AAMI Stadium
Teams: Adelaide and Port Adelaide

Western Australia

Home Ground: Patersons Stadium
Teams: West Coast and Freemantle

New South Wales

Home Ground: Sydney Cricket Ground
Team: Sydney

Queensland

Home Ground: GABBA
Team: Brisbane

Home Ground: Carrara Stadium
Team: Gold Coast

[top]
Even Spread
Win a game with 9 or more individual goal kickers.

To best way to achieve this trophy is to swap your forwards with other players after they have kicked a goal.

Basically, once one of your players has kicked a goal, press and go to team management. Once there select the player who kicked the goal and move him to the backline by selecting a player in the backline. The backline player will then swap with the forward.

Continue to do this until 9 different players have kicked a goal, at which point the trophy will pop. Please note that you will not be able to check the names of all players who have kicked a goal in the match, so you should kept a list when attempting to obtain this trophy.

[top]
Chairman of the Board
Create a full team of 40 or more players in the Footy Factory.

Simply go to the Footy Factory and create a new team. Once you have created a team, move any 40 players from other teams to your list and save.

[top]
Dancing with Your Sister
Play out a drawn game.

You may get this trophy while completing the seasons. Otherwise you can simply start a human v human match and have neither of the teams score. At the end of the game the trophy will pop.

[top]
Downtown
Kick a goal from within the centre square.

There are two methods for getting this trophy.

The first is similar to 50 Metre Bomb. Take a mark outside the centre square on you team's goal side with your Centre Half Forward and enter "goal kicking" mode by pressing the button. Then kick for goal holding for the extra distance. You will probably need to have around a 10 km plus wind behind you blowing in the goal direction to make the distance.

The other option is to hold for a long goal kick while on the run through the centre square. You will need to ensure that you swap to your full forward using while the ball is in the air and have him bump the full back so as to prevent a spoil.

When you kick the goal the trophy will unlock.

[top]
Australian Made
Create a player in the player creator.

Simply go to the Footy Factory and create a player from scratch. You can either create the player or simply use the player generator to make a random player. Once you have created your player the trophy will pop.

[top]
Leather Poisoning
Gather 40 or more disposals with a single player.

This is another trophy which you can either try to get "legitimately" or simple play against a human opponent.

When playing a full match (20 minute quarters) one of your players may reach this amount of possessions, particularly if you are dominating the game.

The "non-legitimate" method involves playing a human v human match and focusing on a single player getting the ball. First you need to choose a player. Once that player has the ball run to open space and handball the ball in front of you using (to open space and not to another player). Collect the ball and repeat until you have 40 possessions. I recommend that you try to achieve this using your ruckman. That way, if you lose possession all you need to do is cause a bounce up by tackling a player using and you will automatically be controlling the ruckman and will be close to the ball. This can be done on 5 minute quarters if you are efficient.

Once you have 40 possessions the trophy will pop.

If you use the "non-legitimate" method you should look to obtain By Hand at the same time as getting this trophy.

[top]
No 'I' in Team
Play a co-operative match with at least 2 players on the same team.

Simply play a match with 2 human players on the same team. You do not need to win, so you can use other PS3 peripherals such as the blue ray remote control if you do not have a second controller. When setting up the match, assign both human controllers to the same team.

Once you have completed the match the trophy will pop.

[top]
Kicked a Bag
Kick 5 or more goals in a match with a single player.

Simply have one player in your team kick 5 goals or more in a match. You should easily get this during one of your matches while completing a season.

Once a player has kicked the 5 goals the trophy will unlock.

This trophy is slightly glitched in that it may not unlock the first time you kick 5 goals. If this occurs, don't fret, simply kick 5 goals again in another match and the trophy should unlock.

[top]
Spoil Short
Perform 50 spoils.

You can perform a spoil by holding and pressing while in a marking contest. Simply perform 50 spoils over a number of games and the trophy will unlock.

You can check your total number of spoils by pressing on the main menu.

[top]
Shut 'em Down
Perform 10 effective tackles in a match.

This trophy is similar to Attacking Pressure and again, can be difficult if you try to get it "legitimately".

Basically, you need to earn 10 free kicks from tackles during the match.

Simply have the second human player stand still holding the ball for a few seconds and then tackle him for the free kick. Repeat 10 times and the trophy will unlock.

[top]
Online Player
Complete 5 online games.

Simply win or lose 5 different games online for this easy, and sociable, trophy.

[top]
Torpedoes Away!
Kick a goal with a torpedo from 50 meters.

You will probably get this trophy at the same time as 50 Metre Bomb.

Take a mark outside the 50 metre arc and enter goal kicking mode. When you kick for the goal hold to kick a torpedo. You will have to adjust the accuracy significantly to score a goal when kicking a torpedo though. When you kick a goal using a torpedo the trophy will unlock.

[top]
Fruity
Kick a goal from the boundary with a banana.

Take a mark next to the boundary in your forward pocket. While kicking for goal aim your player towards the top of the goal square and hold to kick a banana. I recommend using half power, otherwise the ball will not curve at the correct time for the goal. Once you kick the banana the trophy will pop.

[top]
Talk to the Hand
Break 2 tackles in a row with fends.

To break a tackle using a fend hold while running with the ball when the opposition attempts to tackle you. You must break 2 tackles in a row to obtain the trophy.

If you are having difficulty, try playing against another human opponent or against the computer and adjust all of the their stats. You can adjust the stats for all players in the Footy Factory. To make this trophy easier select a team and individually reduce all of their players' tackle abilities to 0. Then select another team and increase all of the individual player's fend abilities to 100. Next, play a match where you control the team with the increased stats and the computer or the other human controls the team with the reduced stats.

Once you break the 2 tackles the trophy will pop.

[top]
Winners (are Grinners)
Win a match.

Simply win your first match, either in season or exhibition mode. Once you have won the trophy will unlock.

[top]
Playing Tall
Win a ruck contest with the shortest player on your team.

The easiest way to get this trophy is to play against a human opponent.

Select West Coast as your team. As soon as the match starts, put Daniel Kerr into the ruck. Then, simply have your human opponent do nothing at the ruck contest and tap the stick to win the contest. As soon as the little man taps the ball, this easy silver trophy will unlock.

[top]
Hot Streak
Win 5 matches in a row during a season on Professional difficulty or above.

You can obtain this trophy playing a season or NAB cup on professional or legend difficulty.

Simply win 5 games in a row. You don't really need to focus on getting this trophy as you will get the trophy at the same time as Nabbed It where you must win all 5 matches in a row to win the NAB cup. Alternatively, if you ensure that you win the last 2 matches of a premiership season (and all 3 finals) when going for The Professionals or Legendary you will also get the trophy.

If it looks like you are going to lose a game, hit and quit. You will be able to restart the match without any consequences.

[top]
Hard Nut
Perform 20 heavy bumps.

To perform a bump you press the stick in the direction of the opposition player.

A "heavy bump" will cause the opposition player to drop the ball and fall to the ground. Perform 20 of these over a number of games and the trophy will pop.

Unfortunately there is no way to check the number of heavy bumps you have performed.

[top]
End-to-End
From a kick-in, score a goal without the opposition touching the ball.

This one will take a few attempts. As the trophy description says, you need to take the ball from a kick in from your goal square to the other side of the field and kick a goal without your opponent touching the ball.

The best way to do this is through marks and kicks. First kick from the oppositions goal square to the half back 50 metre arc and have a player take a mark using . Next kick from the half forward 50 metre arc and again have a player take a mark. Then, kick to your full forward and have him take a mark and then kick the goal. When you kick the goal, the trophy will pop.

Even on amateur difficulty this will take a few attempts as the computer will spoil often spoil at least one of those marks and therefore touch the ball.

[top]
Chas
In Season mode, a member of the player controlled team wins the Brownlow medal.

The Brownlow Medal is granted by the game to the player who has the most "best on ground" awards at the end of the season. You can check these by viewing the "Season Stats" by pressing when in a season menu.

You should be able to get this on amateur difficulty on 3 or 5 minute quarters without too much problem. The game generally awards best on ground to the player with the most disposals. However, if you're playing with 3 or 5 minute quarters on amateur difficulty that is likely to be one of your forwards, who may, for example, take 5 marks, kick 5 goals and have 5 disposals. The game therefore gives some weight to goals kicked as well. If you win most of your matches, you should have no problem obtaining this trophy.

At the end of the home and away portion of the season (end of round 24) the game will advise you of who has won the Brownlow Medal. If it is one of your players, the trophy will pop.

You should attempt to obtain this trophy while getting Amateurs' Hour.

[top]
By Hand
Win a match with more handballs than kicks.

Simply win a match with more handballs than kicks. Honestly, it is more difficult than it sounds.

It is much easier to win a match with stop-start play (kick, mark, kick, mark etc) than it is with a free flowing game (i.e. mark, play on, handball, handball etc). Often you will find your handballs will be intercepted or your players will be tackled when attempting this in normal play.

Accordingly, it is much easier to use the "non-legitimate" method. Simply play against another human opponent and cause you team to have more handballs and score a goal to win the match. Once you win the match, the trophy will pop. If using the non-legitimate method, you should obtain this trophy at the same time as Leather Poisoning.

[top]
Got the Wood on 'em
Defeat every team at least once in a home and away season.

To get this trophy you will need to beat every team in the league in one season.

To ensure you get this trophy, prior to starting a season you should check you team's fixture to make sure you are aware of the teams that it only plays once. The fixture will be the same as the 2011 AFL season, so you can either check it in-game on use an official 2011 fixture. Your team will only play 6 teams twice.

If you are playing one of the teams that you play once and are going to lose hit to quit the match. You will then be able to restart the match without consequence.

Please note that this trophy will unlock if you defeat a team, that you haven't defeated previously, in the finals series. It does not have to be only during the "home and away" portion of the season.

When you defeat the last of the 16 teams, the trophy will unlock.

[top]
The Beautiful Game
Kick the ball off the ground to score a goal.

To kick a ball of the ground press when it is on the ground.

Simply do this near your goals and kick a goal for an easy silver. The trophy will pop once you kick the goal.

This is another trophy which is slightly glitched and may not unlock the first time you kick the goal. Simply do it again and the trophy should unlock.

[top]
The Professionals
Win a Toyota AFL 2011 Premiership Season on Professional, no simulating.

Win the AFL Premiership Season on Professional. Difficulty trophies do stack, so you can get this at the same time as Legendary if you wish.

[top]
It's a Drubbing
Win a match by over 50 points.

While playing through the seasons and improving at the game, you will eventually play a match where you thump the opposition and this trophy is achieved.

If you having difficulty, simply play against a human opponent and beat them by 51 points or more.

[top]
Set for September
Finish on top of the ladder in a Toyota AFL 2011 Premiership Season, no simulating.

To obtain this trophy you need to be on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season (round 24).

The ladder is shown on the main season menu page. Keep an eye on it to ensure you are at the top and make sure you win enough matches to stay there.

If, at the end of round 24, you are on top of the ladder, the trophy will pop.

[top]
Legendary
Win a Toyota AFL 2011 Premiership Season on Legend, 20 min quarters, extreme injuries, no simulating

This one is going to take up the majority of your time in getting the plat and is tough.

As the trophy description says, you need to win the premiership on 20 minute quarters on legend difficulty with injuries set to extreme. 20 minute quarters are effectively a real game of AFL. With time on, it will be approximately 30 minutes a quarter and therefore 2 hours per match. To win the season you need to play 25 to 26 matches, making this a 50 hour trophy in itself.

You can always use the trick to quit any match you are losing, however that is only going to increase your playing time. Accordingly, I suggest that you simply focus on finishing in the top 8 and then ensure you win all 4 finals. If at any time you think you are going to lose a final, you should quit.

When you win the Grand Final on legend difficulty the trophy will pop.

[top]
Nabbed It
Win the Pre-Season Competition on Legend in real time with extreme injuries.

This one isn't as tough as Legendary as you only have to play 5 matches.

When you win the NAB cup on legend difficulty to the trophy will pop.

[top]
First Class Century
Have a player in your team kick more than 100 goals in a season.

You should be able to get this trophy while completing Legendary as you will probably be kicking 20 to 30 goals a game on 20 minute quarters. Simply try to ensure that your full forward kicks at least 4 goals a game. Goals kicked in finals count towards your total.

[top]
Lifetime Lagger
Kick 5000 goals.

This trophy is the other plat-killer in this game (with Legendary).

If you play a 20 minute quarters match on amateur you will probably be able to kick 50 goals a game on average. At that rate you will need to play 100 games. If each game is 2 hours that means 200 hours of game play.

If you plan on going for this trophy, you can check your goal kicking total by pressing on the main menu.
