[top]Tips & Strategies

Blokus is all about learning how to spread out and trap your opponent. Here I will provide basic instructions and tips on how to spread and trap, as well as some pictures to back up what I am saying.

The Basics

Not every match is won by simply having the most points, you need to check the requirements of the level to know what you need to do. I have outlined those requirements below so you can check them as you are playing the level.

You earn points in Blokus based on how many tiles the piece you placed has (a 5-tile piece=5 points). To place a piece you must connect it to another piece by a corner and not a side (See Images).

Different Modes of Play

Classic 4 - In this mode it is you vs 3 CPU opponents. Each of you control one colour Red, Green, Blue and Yellow.

Classic 2 - In this mode it is 1 vs 1 but you both control 2 colours. The colours are separate from one another so you can't play a Red on Green piece for example.

Classic Team - In this mode it is 2 vs 2. You team up with the CPU to take down the other 2 colours. It is not bad in the early tournaments, but by the end the AI of your partner shuts off and they end up working against you.

Duo - In this mode it is 1 vs 1 but on a 196 square board. This means only 2 colours, Orange and Purple , play. Follow the tips below on how to easily win at this.

Tips on how to Spread and Trap

-Think of the board has having 4 quadrants and it makes it easier to plan your attack.

-You want to place as many 5-tile pieces as possible at the beginning. Build in a straight line towards the middle of the board and then begin to spread out to the other quadrants. You want as many tile-corners available as possible so you can spread out. If the piece you are placing has a tile that juts out, make sure that is facing up or down so it gives you another corner to branch off of.

-Don't concentrate on just placing big pieces though. Don't forget you are trying to spread out to gain as much territory as possible. Try to fit the small pieces into the nook of your opponent's pieces so you can expand past their blocks.

-Your opponent is going to be doing the same thing though, so this is where trapping comes in. Create walls with your big pieces to either stop or slow down your opponent from entering into your space. Remember the more area you control, the more space you can place your pieces.

-There are two types of boards, 400 square boards (4 colours) and 196 square boards (2 colours). On a 400 square board it is nearly impossible to fully trap your opponent, but you can do it on the 196 square.

-On the 196 square board you will want to fully trap your opponent, otherwise it is very hard to win. To do this just keep placing your 5-tile pieces in a L shape pattern around your opponents colour. The trick is though to make sure that you place the blocks in a way so that the CPU cannot expand past the wall. Once the CPU is fully trapped you can keep expanding into its territory, knowing that you have a wide open space that it can't touch.

In the end it will just take some time to learn when and how to place your pieces, but as long as you keep these tips in your mind you should be fine.

[top]Roadmap

This game is broken up into Offline and Online components. The online is pretty much dead so utilize the Boosting Thread to find a partner. It doesn't matter which you do first, but I suggest if you find someone to go online then do that while you can.

As for the Offline trophies just work your way through all 6 tournaments to earn all the trophies. The only one that isn't story related is What Happens In Blokus™, Stays In Blokus™ but this will probably be earned as you go through the tournament.

What Happens In Blokus™, Stays In Blokus™
Executed a perfect block

A Perfect Block has to be done against 3 opponents so it has to be set to Classic 4 for it to work. You will probably obtain this trophy as you go through the tournament but if not here is how you get it.

The block you place has to touch one square of each of the different colour tiles. A great place to do this is when you reach the centre of the board and you place a piece in the middle separating all the other colours (See images). As long as you are touching all 3 colours it will say "Perfect Block" and the trophy will unlock.

Finished Discovery Cup in Tournament Mode

This is the First Tournament. Here are a breakdown of the levels requirements and what you need to do to succeed.

Classic 4 - Don't finish last - You don't need to win, just don't place 4th.

Duo - Get 60+ points - Once again you don't need to win just end the game with 60+ points. - Keep placing your 5 tiles pieces and you will get this.

Classic 2
- Don't let one of your opponent's colours get more than 75 points. - You don't need to win, just don't let one of the CPU's colours get 75+ points. Use both your colours to block off one of the CPU's colour to prevent it from spreading out. You don't care about points just stopping one of the colours.

Classic Team - Get 60 points between you and your partner - You don't need to win just place enough tiles to equal a combined total of 60+.

Duo - Beat your opponent - Finally you need to win a match. Not very hard just keep placing the 5 tile pieces and you should have the win.

Finished Conqueror Cup in Tournament Mode

This is the Second Tournament. Here are a breakdown of the levels requirements and what you need to do to succeed.

Classic 4 - Finish 1st and get at least 70 points - Use the strategies listed in Tips and Strategies and you should be fine. Just remember if you don't have at least 70 points you will not win.

Classic Team - Beat your opponent and get at least 75 points - This is a combined score of 75 so it isn't very large. Work together and you should have no problem getting this.

Classic 2 - Beat your opponent - Use the strategies listed in Tips and Strategies to beat your opponent.

Duo - Beat your opponent and use all your 5-tile pieces - This is an 196 square board so you don't have a lot of room. Just keep placing your 5-tiles pieces (attempting to block off your opponent) and you should be fine. Once they have all been placed switch to the smaller pieces and win the match.

Classic 4 - Get 80+ points to win - You don't need to win just earn more than 80 points. The CPU is more aggressive now so try to spread out as fast as possible to ensure there is enough room for you to get to 80. Try to get your 5-tile pieces out first but don't forget to use your smaller pieces to sneak past into the other quadrants.

This is the Third Tournament. Here are a breakdown of the levels requirements and what you need to do to succeed.

Duo - Get 60+ points - No need to win just earn at least 60 points to proceed. Keep placing your 5-tile blocks and spread out as much as possible to complete this.

Classic 4 - Don't finish last - As long as you place higher than 4th you will proceed. Concentrate on spreading out as much as you can on the board while placing your 5-tile pieces.

Classic 2 - Earn a combine total of 130+ points - You are in control of 2 colours so work together to spread out across the board quicker and trap your opponent.

Classic Team - Don't let one of your opponent's colours get more than 75 points. Same as before, you don't need to win so just concentrate on stopping one of your opponent's colours from spreading out too much.

Duo - Get 70+ points to win - This is less than the last cup but the CPU is more aggressive. Just use the same strategies as before and trap your opponent before they can spread out.

MC Blokus™
Finished Master Cup in Tournament Mode

This is the Fourth Tournament. Here are a breakdown of the levels requirements and what you need to do to succeed.

This is where it gets a lot tougher. The CPU no longer cares about winning just stopping you, and it will use all three opposing colours to trap you.

Classic 4 - Win and get 70+ points - You need to spread out fast to ensure there is enough board to reach 70 points. Just keep utilizing the strategies we have established and you will be fine.

Classic Team - Beat the CPU - What I said before about the CPU using all 3 colours against you, still applies to team battle. Your partner will place tiles that will trap you and prevent you from spreading. To prevent this place your blocks in a way that you force your partner on one side of the board and you can worry about the other.

Classic 2 - Don't let one of your opponent's colours get more than 75 points. - Since you don't need to win you can use both your colours to trap one of your opponent's colours in a corner. Just keep building walls around them so they can't spread out.

Duo - Beat your opponent - As with all Duos trap your opponent on one side of the board so you can spread out and win.

Classic 4 - Place 1st with a 20 second timer - Every turn you will have only 20 seconds to make a move, otherwise the computer will just place a block at random. Use your opponent's turn to plan your strategy because by the end it will be harder to see where to place your pieces. Once again just spread out as fast as possible so you have more areas to places blocks and you won't feel so confined by the time.

Finished Elite Cup in Tournament Mode

This is the Fifth Tournament. Here are a breakdown of the levels requirements and what you need to do to succeed.

Classic Team - Beat your opponent and get 80+ points - So you need a combined total of 80+ points (and 1st place) to proceed. Strategy remains the same, spread out and keep yourself separated from your partner to succeed.

Classic 4 - Win without using the 1-tile or 2-tile piece - This is where it gets a little different. Without the 1 or 2-tile piece it is harder to spread out at the end. This means you will need to capture more space quicker so that you have enough room at the end to use your tiles.

Classic 2 - Beat your opponent with a 20 second timer - Like the last tournament use your opponent's turn to plan your move and utilize both your colours to stop the CPU's spread.

Classic Team - Use all the 5-tile pieces to win - You don't need to place 1st just utilize all the 5-tile pieces. This is one of the toughest levels in the game, because as mentioned already your teammate is out to trap you as well. Try to use as many 5-tile pieces at the beginning as possible, but as soon as the CPU spreads out too much switch to smaller pieces so you can access new areas so you can continue to spread.

Duo - Beat your opponent without the 1-tile piece - This is on a 196 square board so this shouldn't be a problem (I never use the 1-tile piece here anyways). As always with this board trap the CPU in the corner quickly so you have the other half to spread out. If you are unable to trap it, reset and try again.

You Are Legend
Finished Legend Cup in Tournament Mode

This is the Final Tournament. Here are a breakdown of the levels requirements and what you need to do to succeed.

Classic 2 - Get 130+ points to win - You don't need to win just get a combined total of 130+ points to proceed. The strategies haven't changed just the CPU has gotten tougher.

Classic Team - Beat your opponent - Your partner is really out to get you now as any attempt to spread out will be stopped by one of the CPU's 3 colours. What you are going to want to do is don't concentrate too much on one area. If you keep spreading too far one way you will lose half the board. Instead keep branching off your tiles and try to gain space where you can (you will have less space to place tiles but hopefully you can use the small pieces to branch out into new territories).

Classic 2 - Beat your opponent using only 1 1-tile piece - After one of your colours uses the 1-tile piece the other colour will not be allowed to use it as well. This is only a small inconvenience, and one I didn't really notice. Sacrifice one of your colours to stopping the spread of the CPU and use the other one to place all the big pieces. By doing this you should have a large open area to work with and while one of your colour's points will be quite low, you will have earned enough points with the other one to make up for it.

Duo - Beat your opponent without using the 1-tile piece - Same as the last tournament, trap your opponent quickly and you won't even notice the missing 1-tile.

Classic 4 - Place 1st to to become a Legend - Nothing more I can say that hasn't been said before. Trap and Spread your way to victory.
