[top]Tips and Strategies

Non-mission trophies can be earned all throughout the Single-player campaign and Spec-Ops missions. To help simplify things, I've recommended either the first time or easiest method (sometimes both) to obtain each trophy. Every method is more-or-less fool-proof.

When you load the game for the first time, you'll be asked if you'd like to skip some particularly disturbing content.

Toggle Spoiler

Choosing to skip this content will not affect trophies in any way. If you find the mission to be in poor taste, or just want to finish the game as quickly as possible, you should feel free to skip the offending content.

[top]Roadmap

Step 1 - Play through the Single-player Campaign on Veteran difficulty
When you choose to start single-player for the first time, you won't be given the option to choose a difficulty. That choice will come at the end of the first mission, S.S.D.D. Once you have run The Pit, choose Veteran and exit up the stairs to begin. As you play through, keep an eye out for miscellaneous trophies that can be earned during the campaign. Also remember to keep on the look out for Intel, the game's collectibles.

Step 2 - Clean-up
Once the credits stop rolling, hop back into the campaign via Mission Select and pick up any Intel you might have missed, as well as any trophies that you forgot to earn. Remember to set the difficulty to Recruit or you're going to have a bad time.

Step 3 - Play through Spec-Ops
While Spec-Ops missions were designed with co-operative play in mind, you can play through every one of them on your own, though two will require at least a second controller. It's certainly harder to go alone, but not at all impossible. Beat each mission with a three star rating, and pick up the last few miscellaneous trophies to close another game out.

To earn this trophy you must complete the single-player campaign on either Hardened or Veteran difficulty.

General tips for Veteran:
  • Slow and Steady - while there are a number of points during the campaign that force you to act within a time limit, you are, for the most part, largely free to complete missions at your own pace. When you can be killed in under a second by just a few hits, you really don't want to be rushing around. Take your time to analyse situations, back-track for ammunition or a better weapon, and make damn sure the coast is clear before you progress.
  • Hide and Peek - since you can take only a very small amount of damage before being killed, and enemies have lightning fast reflexes, it's incredibly important that you know how to peek properly. Say you're walking down a corridor which branches off to the right at a 90 degree angle. What most people will do is turn to face their right and strafe out. Ordinarily that would be fine, but on Veteran it could get you killed. Instead, lock your cross-hair to the corner and slowly peak out, keeping your crosshair locked to the corner - this way you can directly control how much you can see, and how much of you your enemies can see. The further back you stand from the corner the better.
  • The Best Offence... - whenever you can find one, pick up a Riot Shield - they are indestructible, and invaluable. Provided that you're crouching while using it, you'll take no damage from firearms, and minimal damage from explosives that come at you front-on. Moreover, you can use them to melee, which is also the most efficient way to kill enemies that also have riot shields!
  • No When to Fold'em - as soon as you take any damage, dive for cover. If you're facing off with an enemy and he shoots you first, nine times out of ten he's going to kill you before you can kill him, because he's going to bink (headshot) you, which will totally throw off your aim.
  • Quick-draw - when you reload your weapon, keep an eye on the ammo counter. As soon as it is full, double-tap to cancel the end of the reload animation. Depending on the weapon, it could save you up to a second, and in combat, every second counts.
  • Quick-scope - if your crosshair is close to an enemy when you look down the sight of your weapon, your reticle will snap to that enemy. On Veteran you should absolutely exploit this to your advantage as much as possible. If you kill an enemy, instead of readjusting your aim, unsight/resight to acquire your target quicker. Also, if you're having difficulty spotting an enemy, look in his general direction and then look down the sights; if your crosshair moves, you've found your foe.
  • Along for the Ride - while it's the last thing you want to hear if you're looking for a challenge, you should consider letting your AI companions do most of the heavy lifting. They're actually quite competent, and are more than capable of taking thinning enemy numbers before you join the fight. Heck, they even throw grenades back, and that can be damn handy!

Tip: when you reach the top of the oil rig, and the final breach, enemies will start spamming smoke grenades. This part can be incredibly frustrating, as enemies will move freely through the smoke, flanking you from all sides. I found the best thing to do was, after coming up the stairs, running to the back left corner, right behind the forklift. Pit Boss
Run The Pit in ‘S.S.D.D’ and finish with a final time under 30 seconds.

Once you've finished training the locals in the first mission, S.S.D.D., you'll be sent to 'The Pit' - a gun course that has you shooting at enemy targets while avoiding civilians in a race against the clock. Your performance in The Pit is used to evaluate what difficulty you should play through the game on.

Your time is the ultimate score for The Pit, and it's modified by your performance. The higher your accuracy, the more time that will be shaved off your total. Conversely, the more civilian targets you hit, the more time will be added to your final score.

To get this trophy, you have to beat The Pit with a final time of under 30 seconds, after score modifiers have been applied.

Note: The Pit is also in Spec Ops, but you can only earn this trophy during S.S.D.D. in the single-player campaign.

First thing you're going to want to do is just walk your way through the course, memorizing when and where the targets will pop up. Once you know the layout, it's time to hit it hard. Fire single shots at your targets, sprint between areas, and never reload your weapon - always switch to your sidearm. If you can, try to line targets up so that you can take them both out with a single shot - it will help your overall accuracy when your final score is calculated.

Occasionally you might hit a civilian, but don't worry about it. As long as you're quick and accurate, you should be fine. I managed a time of 27 seconds even after shooting a civilian target.

Weapons:
If you're attempting this trophy having played the game for a while, or are a CoD veteran, then pick whichever weapons you feel most confident with. If you're new, and want to get this done as quick as possible, then I recommend that you pick up the MP5K Holographic, and the M9 pistol. Both are very accurate, including when fired from the hip (The Pit's overseer will yell at you about not aiming down your sights, but you can ignore him).

Ghost
Plant the C4 in ‘Cliffhanger’ without alerting or injuring anyone in the blizzard.

To earn this trophy you have to make your way through the enemy compound in Cliffhanger without killing any enemies, or alerting any to your presence.

When you start Cliffhanger there will be two pairs of enemies that you and Cpt. MacTavish will need to take out. Don't fret, you're allowed to shoot these guys and still get this trophy.

Once you reach the next checkpoint and your mission objective updates to "Find a way into the base," that's when you need to channel your inner ninja. Your best option is to go hard left, making your way towards the objective by moving from cover to cover. As you do this, make sure to avoid enemies completely - don't even look at them. If you do, MacTavish will probably shoot them, and other enemies will definitely discover the body and raise the alarm.

Once you reach the runway you're basically in the clear, so make a bee-line for the objective. After you plant the C4, provided that you weren't spotted and didn't kill any enemies, this trophy will unlock.

Colonel Sanderson
Kill 7 chickens in under 10 seconds in ‘The Hornet’s Nest’.

As you progress through The Hornet's Nest, your mission objective will update to "Head for the LZ to the southeast of the market." At this stage you should start to notice a number of poultry prisoners - chickens in cages will be strewn across the place. Initially you'll only see a few here and there, usually in groups of no more than three. Once you reach the next checkpoint, however, you'll find them in larger groups. If you still have any HE grenades left, using them will make this even easier. Find two large clusters of chickens, and throw a grenade at each. Shoot a few as well, for good measure. Provided you killed seven in under ten seconds, this trophy will unlock.

Spec Ops is a collection of twenty-three individual, self-contained missions, spread across five sets: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo. With the exception of two missions (Overwatch and Big Brother - both in the Bravo set), most missions can be attempted solo, but it's most certainly advised that you play through them all with a partner, either online or split-screen. If you do not have a partner, you can look for one here, in the Official Modern Warfare 2 Boosting Thread.

This trophy is so easy they might as well give it to you when you put the disc in your console.

Press to equip your underslung M203 grenade launcher, and start firing in the direction that all the bullets are coming from. Downed but Not Out
Kill 4 enemies in a row while downed in Special Ops.

To earn this trophy, you must be playing Spec Ops either with a partner or a second controller, because if you lose all your health while playing solo you'll just die, and the mission will end. If you're playing with a partner, however, you'll go into a downed state, and your teammate will have a short time (it depends on which difficulty you're playing on) in which to find you and revive you (by pressing and holding ). It's also important to remember that if you continue to take damage while downed, the timer will run out quicker.

This trophy requires that you kill a total of four enemies while in a downed state. There are plenty of place you can do this, but an easy one is in Wetwork, which is in the Echo set. Make sure to be playing on the easiest difficulty.

After completing the breach, exit the room and find the scaffolding. Both players should climb it, and then have one player stab whoever needs the trophy in the back, putting them into the downed state (the scaffolding will protect them from enemy gunfire). The player that is still up and about should then run around and draw the attention of enemies, and try and lead them to the downed player.

No Rest For the Wary
Knife an enemy without him ever knowing you were there in Single Player or Special Ops.

You'll have a number of opportunities to earn this trophy, both in the single-player campaign, and in the Spec Ops missions. The first opportunity you'll get to earn this will be during the single-player mission Cliffhanger.

Once you've scaled the cliffs, taken out the two pairs of guards, and entered the compound, your mission will be to set some C4. As you progress through the level you'll be shrouded by the blizzard, and enemies will be unable to see you unless you get too close or make noise. Simply wait for an enemy to show his back to you, then sneak up behind him (make sure to be crouching), and stab him in the back by pressing .

Note: killing an enemy during this stage of the mission will prevent you from earning Ghost . See Cold Shoulder for more information.

Kill a Juggernaut in Special Ops.

Juggernauts are the massive enemies that look like extras from The Hurt Locker. They take an enormous amount of punishment, but they can be killed. You'll first encounter these behemoths in the Spec Ops mission Snatch & Grab - the fifth mission in the Charlie set. Make sure you set the difficulty to Regular, then jump in.

Almost immediately the Juggernaut should start charging at you. Crouch down or go prone, then, using your sniper rifle, start blasting away, doing your best to aim for the head. If he gets too close, throw a flashbang and use your other weapon to spray him down. It might not feel like it, but he will eventually go down. Once he's dead, this trophy will unlock.

Desperado
Kill 5 enemies in a row using 5 different weapons or attachments in Single Player or Special Ops.

You can earn this trophy in any single-player or Spec Ops mission. The game's definition of a "different weapon or attachment" is pretty broad, so remember this simple rule: if you can pick it up and equip it, instead of just collecting it as ammo, it's a "different" weapon.

If you get a kill with an M4A4 equipped with an ACOG scope, then switch to (and get a kill with) an M4A4 with a Red Dot scope, they will count as two out of five required kills. If you can, avoid using explosives such as RPGs or underslung Grenade Launchers because they do splay damage and may kill another enemy unintentionally, resetting your kill count.

Context-based weapons and devices contribute, too, so if you get a kill with C4 or a Gatling gun, it will count.

Your best opportunity, from what I've found, will be during the single-player mission The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday, because there is a lot of enemies, and an enormous variety of weapons available for you to choose from.

Alternatively, you can try it during The Gulag or Loose Ends. Both missions give you access to an armory full of weapons - far more than you'd ever need.

Kill five enemies using five different weapons, attachments, or devices, and this trophy will unlock.

Ten plus foot-mobiles
Kill at least 10 enemies with one Predator missile in Single Player or Special Ops.

The first chance you'll get to earn this trophy will be during the single-player campaign, in the mission Wolverines!.

As you progress through the level, you'll be sent to go and fetch the Predator Drone Control Rig, after which you'll use it to defend yourself. You'll only see a handful of targets, but don't worry, you'll get to use the Predator Drone again, so just kill these guys and move on.

Later on in the mission, Sgt. Foley will move 'Raptor' from Nate's Restaurant into Burger Town, after which you'll be prompted to use the Predator Drone to defend the building. Press to equip the Control Rig, center the cross-hair in the center of the largest group of enemies you can find, then fire the missile (pressing a second time will increase the velocity of the rocket if you want to fire faster). There are about three large groups in total, so if you don't get it on your first try, don't worry too much. If you mess it up, just pause the game and reload the checkpoint.

Once you're out of the armory, you'll be asked to draw fire using the shield. Making sure you're crouched, simply walk forward with the shield equipped, and then press to beat down the first enemy you see. Doing so will unlock this trophy.

Knock-knock
Kill 4 enemies with 4 shots during a slow-mo breach in Single Player or Special Ops.

You'll have a number of opportunities to earn this trophy, both in the single-player campaign, and in the Spec Ops missions. The first opportunity you'll get to earn this will be during the single-player mission The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday.

After infiltrating the Oil Rig you'll reach your first Breach. You can breach either the left or the right doors, but the left is certainly easier. Equip your M4A1, then press and hold to place the charge and breach the hostage room. Work your way from left to right while making sure to aim for the head. Provided that all four of your shots hit their mark, and you took out an enemy with each, this trophy will unlock. If it doesn't, pause the game and reload the last checkpoint.

Look Ma Two Hands
Kill 10 enemies in a row using akimbo weapons in Single Player or Special Ops.

Akimbo, in the case of Call of Duty, means dual-wielding weapons (it means something totally different, but that's not going to help you get trophies). will fire the weapon in your left hand, while will fire the weapon in your right; you cannot aim down the sights of either. You need to get ten kills in a row with dual-wielded weapons to earn this trophy.

The first time you can try and get this will be during the single-player mission Takedown, but if you're playing through on Veteran (as is recommended), then you might want to wait for a better opportunity...

And it will come in the form of Spec Ops mission Bomb Squad from the Bravo set, because you actually start off with dual G18 pistols. Set the difficulty to Regular and, ignoring the mission objectives, just run around shooting everyone you can find with your akimbo weapons. When you get your tenth kill this trophy will unlock.

Some Like it Hot
Kill 6 enemies in a row using a thermal weapon in Single Player or Special Ops.

You'll have a number of opportunities to earn this trophy, both in the single-player campaign, and in the Spec Ops missions, but the first opportunity you'll come across will be during the single-player mission Wolverines!.

When you reach Nate's Restaurant, Sgt. Foley will order you up to the roof to defend the building. Once you're up there, look for the automated sentry turret - next to it is an M14 EBR (semi-automatic sniper-rifle) with a Thermal Scope. When the enemies start attacking, pick up the M14, look through the scope, and just start shooting. Once you've killed six enemies in a row using the M14, this trophy will unlock.

Two Birds with One Stone
Kill 2 enemies with a single bullet in Single Player or Special Ops.

You'll have plenty of chances to get this, because this trophy is, in many ways, luck-related. A quick search of YouTube will net you a dozen different ways that people stumbled onto this trophy, so don't stress about it too much.

The easiest way to earn this will be during either the single-player mission Contingency, or the Spec Ops mission Evasion, which is in the Alpha set. Throughout both missions you'll see enemies in pairs. Simply line them up and shoot them with your sniper rifle. Provided that the bullet hits both targets in either their chest or their head, they'll be killed, and you'll earn this trophy.

The Road Less Traveled
Collect 22 enemy Intel items.

To earn this trophy you must find twenty-two pieces of Intel, which can be found throughout the single-player campaign. Provided that you don't miss any, this trophy will unlock after you collect the first piece of Intel in The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday.

For a complete list of Intel locations, see Leave No Stone Unturned .

Leave No Stone Unturned
Collect 45 enemy Intel items.

To earn this trophy you must collect all forty-five pieces of Intel which are littered throughout the single-player campaign. If you miss one, don't sweat - you can go back and get it later via mission select. It's also not necessary to complete the mission in order to 'keep' the Intel - once you've collected it, it's yours, and you can quit to the main menu without worrying.

Note: the game won't tell you what mission you missed the intel in. The only way for you to find out is to load a mission and then pause the game, where you'll be able to see a count of how many pieces you've found in that mission.

Drive By
Kill 20 enemies in a row while driving a vehicle in Single Player or Special Ops.

You might be almost at the end of the campaign and wondering when it is that you'll get to earn this trophy. Well fear not, your best opportunity is in the very last mission, Endgame.

Almost the entirety of this mission is spent chasing an enemy down in a Zodiac speedboat. Whenever you see enemies, point the front of the boat at them and hold to fire. Since you're pre-occupied with steering the boat, the game will auto-target for you, adjusting your aim to hit anything, provided that it's directly in front of you. There are dozens of enemies along the shore (many conveniently standing next to explosive barrels), and even more will challenge you on the water in their own boats - way more than the twenty you need to kill to earn this trophy.

The Harder They Fall
Kill 2 rappelling enemies in a row before they land on their feet in Single Player or Special Ops.

You'll have a number of opportunities to earn this trophy, both in the single-player campaign, and in the Spec Ops missions. The first opportunity you'll get to earn this will be during the single-player mission Exodus.

Once you've cleared the Yellow and Grey houses, Sgt. Foley will tell you that there are "Foot Mobiles by the apartments!" As you move up to engage them, three transport helicopters will arrive, and a whole bunch of enemy troops will rappel down in front of you. Simply kill two enemies as they descend before they reach the ground and this trophy will unlock.
