[top]Introduction

Modern Warfare 2 is the 6th entry in the overwhelmingly popular Call of Duty series and the direct sequel to 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Featuring a campaign that takes you from the dusty streets of middle eastern cities to snow capped mountains to Burger Town, and an all-new Special Operations mode that tests your ability to work together with another player in split screen or online co-op, Modern Warfare 2 is one of the best-selling games of all time.

Although it is also one of the most popular competitive online shooters ever, there are no trophies related to that portion of the game.

[top]Tips and Strategies

  • Most of the non-story-related trophies can be earned in multiple places throughout the Single Player and Spec-Ops portions of the game. This guide suggests the easiest places to get them, but unless the trophy description specifically mentions a particular mission, don't freak out if you pass a mission without getting all of the trophies listed below. You'll likely get them somewhere else, and if you don't, you can always go back via Mission Select later (see Step #3 below).
  • The first time you load up the game, you will see a warning about "disturbing content," and you will be given the choice to enable it or hide it. What this means is that there is a mission in the game that some people will find offensive and so the game developers are giving you the chance to skip it if you'd like. You can get all of the trophies in this game regardless of whether or not you choose to enable this content. If you don't already know what it's about and want help deciding whether you want to play the mission or not, click on the spoiler below for a quick description.

[top]Roadmap

  1. Play through the campaign on Veteran difficulty - This is probably the easiest of all of the Call of Duty games to get through on Veteran difficulty, and you're going to have to do it at some point if you want the platinum, so you might as well just jump right in and get it over with. Get some of the other trophies along the way if you can, but don't obsess about them or go out of your way to look for Intel - just focus on finishing the game.
  2. Special Operations - Many of these missions are pretty straightforward and can be done on your own, but most should be done with a partner, and preferably a partner who has already completed them. Two of the missions require two players to complete. Head on over to the Spec-Ops ~ Helpers/Helpees Thread to find good help, and see Star 69 below for more information.
  3. Clean-up - You should have earned all of the story-related, veteran campaign and Spec-Ops trophies at this point, and hopefully you picked up several of the other trophies as well, but use this time to go back via Mission Select (don't forget to lower the difficulty!), find all of the intel and finish off whatever else you have left to secure your newest platinum trophy.

The Price of War
Complete the single player campaign on Hardened or Veteran Difficulty.

You will earn this trophy when you have completed every mission in the game on either Hardened or Veteran difficulty. Note that it can be a mix of the two difficulties and you don't even have to play the missions in order as long as you've been through the game once on any difficulty, but it makes sense to get this trophy on your first playthrough by playing on Veteran from the start.

If you choose not to go that route, you can go to the Mission Select screen at any time to see the highest difficulty on which you have completed each level. Once they all show as completed on either Hardened or Veteran, you will earn this trophy.

Basic tips for playing on Hardened or Veteran difficulty:
  • Friends indeed - Unlike most of the Call of Duty games, your AI teammates in this one actually do a pretty good job of hitting what they're shooting at. Whenever possible, let them take the lead (and the bullets) for you.
  • Know when to walk away, know when to run... - For most of the game, your best bet is to go slowly, even backing up if you have to, and take out the enemies one at a time until they stop coming. There are a few times, however, when you're better off to sprint through an area, even if it's filled with enemies, to get to a checkpoint, because if you just stand back and keep shooting, the enemies keep coming.
  • Peek-a-boo! - Anytime there is cover available - walls, corners, whatever - use it. Sometimes it can be hard to see where the enemies are, and the only thing you can do is to peek out and let them shoot you so you can locate them. Just remember not to stick your head out if there is any red on your screen at all, and to get back quickly once they do start shooting.
  • Special Effects - You almost always have flash bangs with you, and they can be very handy for stunning a couple of enemies, especially when you're heading into a room or around a corner where you know they are waiting. Just remember to look away after you toss it, or you'll be stunned as well. On the other hand, you only get smoke grenades on a few occasions, but when you have them, they are critical to your success. Toss one or two, wait for them to build up a good cloud, and make a run for the next checkpoint. They also come in handy in conjunction with a thermal scope to take enemies out with little fear of retaliation.

Pit Boss
Run The Pit in ‘S.S.D.D’ and finish with a final time under 30 seconds.

To earn this trophy you need to get through the training area known as "The Pit" with a finishing time of less than 30 seconds. You'll find The Pit at the end of the first single player mission in the game (S. S. D. D.) and in Spec-Ops, but for this trophy you'll be working in S. S. D. D.

The Pit is a simulation, so there are no real enemies, only cardboard cutouts of enemies and civilians. You will be penalized for shooting a civilian or missing an enemy, but you can get a bonus for accuracy. The best way to get a good accuracy bonus is to get good with pistols and use two of them, since they only fire one bullet at a time, but if you're just not comfortable with pistols it can be done with the semi-automatic rifles at your disposal as well - just make sure you are very light on the trigger.

The key to this is to get the pattern down and keep your eyes open so that you don't shoot the wrong cutout. If you get the timing down right, you should be able to switch weapons after taking down the last enemy inside the house, as you're walking up the stairs, so that you don't lose any time.

[top]
Ghost
Plant the C4 in ‘Cliffhanger’ without alerting or injuring anyone in the blizzard.

The keys to this trophy are timing, choosing the right path and letting Captain McTavish do all of the work for you (after the first couple of guys you have to help him take out, which don't matter). Stay hidden and go as slow as possible. When you see an enemy, aim at him but don't fire, and McTavish will normally finish him off. Beyond that, it's just an exercise in stealth and avoidance.

Check the video in the spoiler to make sure you are taking the correct path through the compound, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Note: Make sure you check No Rest for the Wary below before starting on this one if you want to try to get them in the same playthrough, because you'll have to do it first and then restart the checkpoint to come back for this one.

[top]
Colonel Sanderson
Kill 7 chickens in under 10 seconds in ‘The Hornet’s Nest’.

You'll see a few groups of chickens in cages throughout this level, but after you pass through the market you'll come to a spot leading to an alley with two different groups of 5-6 chicken cages and another group of 4-5, and that's the spot you want to focus on for this trophy.

Toss a grenade at one of the larger groups and then open fire on the other one and you should get this no problem. If you want to, turn around and fire into the smaller group as well for good measure, but you shouldn't need it. Remember - if you run out of bullets at any point, switching weapons is faster than reloading.

See Star 69 for more details and video walkthroughs.

Star 69
Earn 69 stars in Special Ops.

Special Operations is a collection of 23 missions broken up into five groups, which can be played solo (with two exceptions) or in online or split-screen cooperative mode. Nearly all of the missions are easier to do with two people and communication is key, so fire up your headset and grab a friend. If you don't have any friends who can help, head on over to the Spec-Ops ~ Helpers/Helpees Thread to find a good partner.

To earn this trophy, you'll need to finish all 23 missions with three stars. For most missions, that means playing on Veteran difficulty, although there are a few where the number of stars you earn is based on how quickly you are able to complete them. Three-some
Kill at least 3 enemies with a single shot from a grenade launcher in Single Player or Special Ops.

This will likely be one of the first trophies you get in the game, because your best opportunity for it is right at the beginning of the second mission, Team Player. You are given a rifle with a grenade launcher attachment and there is a whole host of enemies on the other side of the river.

Hit to enable the launcher and then fire away - don't forget to aim a little high to allow for the pull of gravity as your grenades cross the river.

Toggle Spoiler

[top]
Downed but Not Out
Kill 4 enemies in a row while downed in Special Ops.

If you're playing Spec-Ops with another player and you take too much damage, you will get downed (if you're by yourself, you just die and fail the mission). While you're downed, you have a period of time where you can shoot with your pistol before you bleed out, and you'll have to kill four enemies in one such event to earn this trophy. Keep in mind that if there are a lot of enemies around and they keep shooting you while you're downed you will bleed out faster and not have enough time to get four kills. Obviously, you're going to want to do this on Recruit to make it easier.

The easiest place to get this trophy is during the Spec-Ops mission Acceptable Losses. Jump over the wall to the right of where you start, run down the alley there and then walk out onto the tarmac a bit (but not too far), toward the guys standing by the jeep to the right. Have your buddy knife you in the back, then crawl up and shoot the two jeep guys in the head. Turn left and crawl toward two other guys by a plane over there and kill them, and there you go.

If you don't have another person to play with, you can actually do this pretty easily with two controllers, using your second controller to wield the knife after getting yourself in position with your first controller.

[top]
No Rest For the Wary
Knife an enemy without him ever knowing you were there in Single Player or Special Ops.

This is another one that you will have several opportunities to get during the course of the game, but the first and easiest place to get it is during the stealth sequence at the beginning of the single player mission Cliffhanger. You have to shoot the enemies you come across while you're with McTavish, but after he leaves you, you're free to take out the rest as you see fit. Simply sneak up behind the first one and hit to knife him, and you'll unlock this trophy.

Toggle Spoiler

Note: If you want to get this and Ghost in one playthrough, you'll need to do this first and then restart the last checkpoint to get that one.

[top]
I’m the Juggernaut…
Kill a Juggernaut in Special Ops.

This trophy is exceedingly obvious, and there are several of the Spec-Ops missions where you have to kill Juggernauts, so you're bound to get it at some point, but for most people, the first time you'll see a Juggernaut is at the very beginning of Snatch and Grab. Right when you start, a Juggernaut will spawn and come running toward you from the other side of the map - just go prone on the wing of the airplane you start next to and hit him with your sniper rifle until he goes down.

If he gets too close for comfort before you're able to finish him off, use a flash bang to stun him and give yourself some room, and then unload on him with your other weapon and/or a couple of frag grenades.

[top]
Desperado
Kill 5 enemies in a row using 5 different weapons or attachments in Single Player or Special Ops.

The trophy description is pretty self-explanatory, and this is not hard to do as long as you're paying attention, although it's probably better to do it on the easiest difficulty setting so you can take your time and make sure you don't accidentally kill someone twice with the same weapon.

You can only have two weapons in your inventory at one time, so obviously this is going to require you picking up others along the way. Grenade launchers and similar attachments also count as one of the five for this trophy, but you'll probably want to stay away from explosive weapons because it's too easy to accidentally kill more than one person at a time and that would ruin your streak.

The best way to get this is to get through an area where you have killed a bunch of enemies and/or find a stash of weapons lying around somewhere, and then slowly move into the next section taking out enemies one at a time. Get one kill with each of the weapons you have on you and then go pick up two different ones (make sure they are actually different guns than the ones you've already used!) just to make sure you don't accidentally use the same one twice. Once you get one kill with each of those weapons, go and get one more and finish the job.

Open the spoiler below for a good visual demonstration of this process on The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday.

[top]
Ten plus foot-mobiles
Kill at least 10 enemies with one Predator missile in Single Player or Special Ops.

This trophy has the double bonus of being pretty easy and a lot of fun to acquire.

In Wolverines!, you'll come to a point where you'll get control of the Predator drone. Find a good hiding spot inside one of the buildings, go prone and follow the instructions to fire the missile: press to bring up the controls and to fire, then use to guide the missile to your target. It has a very wide blast radius, so if you put it in the middle of a large group of enemies, you should be good. The guy on your radio will give you updates with each strike, and if you hear him say "Ten plus foot-mobiles," the trophy is yours.

Don't panic if you don't get it on your first shot - you can keep firing for quite a while as the battle is going on around you. If, however, you get to the point where the drone goes offline and you haven't gotten the trophy yet, you'll want to restart the last checkpoint and try again.

[top]
Unnecessary Roughness
Use a riot shield to beat down an enemy in Single Player or Special Ops.

Your first chance to earn this trophy will come in the optional level No Russian. After leaving the terminal, you'll have to fight off several waves of police officers, and there will be plenty of riot shields lying around for you to pick up. Once you have one, just press to melee someone with it until they fall down, and this trophy will pop.

If you chose to hide the objectionable content, focus on getting this trophy in The Gulag. You'll come to a point where you're trapped in a small armory and the game tells you to pick up a riot shield and hit someone with it, so you should get the trophy at that point.

[top]
Knock-knock
Kill 4 enemies with 4 shots during a slow-mo breach in Single Player or Special Ops.

Nearly every breach in the game will give you an opportunity to earn this trophy. It's really just a matter of knowing where the enemies are in each room and going for headshots.

If you want to get it out of the way and you fail in your first attempt, pause the game and restart the last checkpoint so you can try again.

Look Ma Two Hands
Kill 10 enemies in a row using akimbo weapons in Single Player or Special Ops.

The single player mission Takedown is by far your best chance to get this trophy. You have a couple of places during the initial section of the level - the maze-like area with all of the little houses - where you can pick up akimbo (dual wield) weapons, and plenty of enemies to use them on.

Just make sure you only use those weapons and nothing else until the trophy pops. Note that kills do carry over if you die, so even if you're not doing so well with the dual wield weapons, resist the temptation to switch to something else until after you finish this off.

Some Like it Hot
Kill 6 enemies in a row using a thermal weapon in Single Player or Special Ops.

Like so many trophies in this game, there are several places where you can earn this trophy, but your first chance will come during Wolverines!.

You'll pick up a thermal rifle while on the roof of one of the restaurants, and you'll have several opportunities from there on out where large groups of enemies will spawn at the same time. Just hang back in a restaurant or other building and pick them off as they run through the parking lot - as long as you get six in a row without using another weapon, this trophy will unlock.

Another good chance to get this one will come during The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday, and is highlighted in the video below:

[top]
Two Birds with One Stone
Kill 2 enemies with a single bullet in Single Player or Special Ops.

Most likely, you will get this trophy very early on without even trying. However, if you don't get it by the time you get to Contingency, that's your best chance to try on purpose for it. You'll come to a part where Price points out a three man patrol and gives you the option to take them out or leave them alone. As long as you're in the right location, two of them will overlap each other and you can easily take them both out with one shot from your sniper rifle.

[top]
The Road Less Traveled
Collect 22 enemy Intel items.

You'll earn this trophy after you collect 22 of the 45 pieces of Enemy Intel scattered around in the single player campaign. If you collect them all in order, you'll get this after you grab the first piece of Intel in The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday.

See Leave No Stone Unturned below for detailed walkthroughs on where to find all of the Intel.

[top]
Leave No Stone Unturned
Collect 45 enemy Intel items.

Enemy Intel are collectible items scattered throughout the single player campaign, and come in the form of laptop computers that you have to find and take. You do not have to find all of these in one playthrough - you can go back to any mission at any time via Mission Select.

If you've followed the walkthrough above, you may have found a few of these during your initial playthrough, but you'll be getting most of them during your Clean-up phase. Change the difficulty to Recruit and go mission-by-mission until you've found them all. You can see how many you have captured in each mission in the bottom left corner of your pause screen. Written and video walkthroughs of each Intel location are in the spoilers below.

Note: You do not have to finish a mission once you have found all of the Intel - simply pause the game and choose "Save and Quit" from the menu.

Drive By
Kill 20 enemies in a row while driving a vehicle in Single Player or Special Ops.

This one should be very simple. The best place to get it is during the Spec-Ops mission Race, during which you're driving a snowmobile.

Hold down while driving to shoot at anyone who makes the mistake of wandering in front of you, and you should easily take down 20 before you reach the end of the mission.

[top]
The Harder They Fall
Kill 2 rappelling enemies in a row before they land on their feet in Single Player or Special Ops.

In the mission Exodus, you'll come to a point as you're going down the street where there is an ammo crate sitting off the road to the right. As you approach it, you'll see a rope drop down from a helicopter hovering overhead, and three enemies will slide down the rope toward you. Kill two of them before they get their feet planted on the ground to earn this trophy.
