[top]Tips and Strategies

  • Once you complete the game you can select Start Game from the main menu and play Resurrection Mode which will keep your souls, all magic collected, all your upgrades and levels, your Beatrice Stone's, and your relics from your previous game.
  • Resurrection Mode will not keep your Silver Coins, your Damned Souls, or your Virgil Commentaries.
  • There are several missable Trophies in the game due to the fact that there is no level select and the Resurrection Mode starts you from the beginning of the game. Pay close attention to the guide if there is anything you can only get on one level, if you miss it you will have to replay the game to get back to that part to get the trophy on your next playthrough or in the case of a Silver Coin or Virgil Commentary you will have to replay the entire game.
  • Almost all enemies can easily be dispatched with your Holy Cross attacks.
  • The Divine Armor is one of the most useful magics in the game, you may want to consider playing your first playthrough as Holy to make sure you fully level up this great magic to use in the Gates of Hell arena.
  • Don't forget to equip relics in the submenu!! Some Relics gain up to three levels of effectiveness for experienced gained while they are equipped. The sooner you equip them and gain their levels, the better they will be when you most need them.
  • Remember if you die the game will restart you at the previous checkpoint. If you acquired any springs, damned souls, Beatrice stones, silver, or Virgil commentaries after that checkpoint the game DID NOT save them and you will have to get them again.

Slaughter At Acre
Fight against the prisoner at Acre

This is a story trophy. As the game begins you will find yourself at The Citadel of Acre. As soon as the cinematic ends and you can control Dante, a horde of peasants and prisoners will begin to attack you. Stay in the middle or on the sides during the battle to avoid in catapult shots that will damage you if you move to close to the edge by the water. While you are attacking the horde of enemies this trophy will unlock.

Abandon All Hope
Break through the Gates of Hell

This is a story trophy. As you are proceeding after your love Beatrice you will come upon a giant gate, which is of course, The Gates of Hell. You will also have a boss battle in front of the gate. First there will be a horde of minions to dispatch and then there will be a Beast Tamer about halfway through. This is a giant beast with a demon riding him. He is very easy to defeat as he only has short range attacks that consist mostly of stomps. Stay close to him, attacking with combos and when he raises his leg use the stick to evade away and continue your atttack. Eventually he will lower his head and drop to one knee and will be above his head. Run up to him and press the and an action battle sequence will begin that will consist of ,,. After you complete the sequence you will be riding him and another horde of minions will appear. An onscreen pop up will tell you how to attack while riding the Beast so use whichever attack you like best for the minions to dispatch them and a golden orb will appear by the door. Proceed to the door and follow the onscreen action sequence to pry it open which will result in another cutscene involving your descent into hell. By the time you land the trophy will unlock.

Sentence The Judge
Defeat King Minos

This is a story based trophy. Your battle with King Minos will happen at the the end of the In Limbo level. This battle has three stages, all very easy, for the victory. In the first stage he will stab a spike through the floor at you so stay mobile! I found jumping to be more effective but you can dodge if you prefer. After 5 or 6 spikes you will notice a button prompt that will make you use your Scythe grapple to swing to the point on either side to avoid his breath attack. Once he is done his head will be vulnerable so lay into him with some combos but watch for him to lower his head. When he lowers his head jump and continue to combo to avoid his tongue attack. If you happen to get hit follow the onscreen prompts with the stick to dodge the spikes. Either way continue to hit his head until he throws his head in the air in pain. At this point his stomach will be exposed and you can combo it for damage while it's exposed.

He will then call some minions to his aid. Dispatch them like you normally would then watch for his spike attacks from the floor again. Once they are done he will raise his fist high into the air to slam down on you. At this point jump to avoid his slam attacks. His other attack will be to put his hand to one side of the screen and will swing it back at you to the other side. Both are very obvious and can be avoided with the jump. After you avoid them you will see the prompt for again. Follow the same routines to avoid his breath and cause damage until he lowers his hand to the ground with the over it. Follow the onscreen prompts to cause more damage and enter the final stage.

The final stage will begin with him summoning Unbaptized Children and a Gaurdian. Defeat them and then he will use all the same attacks as stage 2 of the battle. After causing enough damage his head will fall to the ground with his tongue out. Follow the onscreen prompts to finish him off and receive your trophy

Lovers Torn Asunder
Defeat Marc Antony

This is a story based trophy. At the end of Lust you will square off against Marc Antony, Cleopatra's lover. He has several attacks to use on you. The first he will slash his sword at you a total of four times with the last being on fire and is an unblockable swing. He will slam his shield onto the ground causing magical spikes to follow you and finish it with a jumping fireball attack. The spikes are blockable but the fireball is not. He will also kick at you and he does this either flamed or normal, The flamed is unblockable. Now there are two ways to approach this battle. You can use counters and dodges while slashing to take him down, but what I found to be very easy is to just let him have it with your Holy Cross with the button. He will occasionally block with his shield or get close enough to attack and at this point if he's blocking, use your Scythe until he lowers his shield and then pummel him some more or counter and attack to knock him off balance then pummel him with some more Holy Cross.

At certain points of the battle Cleopatra will engulf Marc in a protective green forcefield and heal him with her own energy. At this point attack her hand that is not holding the green ball of energy until it releases some green energy for you. Move quickly because the longer he is protected the more energy he gets back. Once Marc Antony is finished the trophy is yours.

The Great Worm
Defeat Cerberus

Cerberus is the three headed gaurdian of hell and is located at the beginning of the entrance to Gluttony. You must kill the two outside heads to be able to kill the center head. Cerberus only has two attacks, he lunges with his head to bite you, and he spits wads of acid at you. There are 2 little acid covered pools of fire on the ground in front of each outside head. Manuever your way up to them and press to absolve them and then press the repeatedly to burst the bubble. When the Head attacks it will get stunned allowing you to freely pummel it with combos. When each head has received enough damage it will fall to the middle with the prompt to finish it. During the finisher be prepared to press the button to finish each head.

The middle head will shoot rapid acid shots at you making it very difficult to pop the acid/flame bubbles before it lunges at you. Use your newly acquired magic power, Lust Storm, to protect yourself from the acid and pop the bubbles to daze the head and then unleash combos while its stunned. Once its sustained enough damage, the prompt will appear to finish it off but be prepared with a series of directional stick presses. Any wrong onscreen command inputs will result in instant death against Cerberus!! After the last head is severed the trophy is yours.

Like Father Like Son
Defeat Alighiero

This is a story based trophy. Alighiero is Dante's father and is the boss that you will fight at the end of the Greed level. By now we have seen the cutscenes up to this point so we all know exactly why he is in the Greed circle. All of his attacks are based on his Cross. If you are too far away he will throw his cross at you. If you are in close he will swing his cross at you. Both are blockable and can be countered and you should counter with the to perform heavy attacks on him. Use your flurry attacks with to hit him fast and cause several amounts of mediocre damage but more than the other attacks. Eventually he will fall to one knee and you will have the opportunity to get in some free combos.

The second part of the fight he will slam his cross into the ground for a new attack that causes a ring to periodically burst from it to cause damage. The good news is you can counter each ring and hit him with 4-5 heavy attacks with the for each ring. Continue this until he falls to one knee again.

The third part he adds another new attack. If he raises the cross over his head and it's glowing move as far away as you can because he unleashes a very powerful attack that can kill you in one hit. If you have the Divine Armor magic or the second upgrade it really helps because it nullifies all of his attacks Except the last one I mentioned, and it recharges your health at the same time. After he is defeated the trophy will sound.

Gates of Dis
Enter the lower circles of the Inferno

This is a story based trophy. At the end of the Anger Circle of Hell, you will face several waves of enemies as you proceed after the Styx Marsh. After clearing them all, you will watch a shocking cutscene between Lucifer and Beatrice and then Dante jumps on the head of Phlegyas and takes control of him. You will then maneuver Phlegyas down a narrow stone bridge to the Gates to the City of Dis. Use Phegyas's attacks just like a normal Beast riding game to knock down the gates. Once both sets of gates fall the trophy is yours.

The Harrowing
Escape Heresy

This is a story based trophy. At the end of The Heresy you will have a tunnel to escape from with several falling stalagmites. As they hit the floor, it will crumble away so move quick and be prepared to double jump and use your to attach to link points. At the very end will be a Wall of Souls to climb and a hallway to exit. As soon as you exit the tunnel and the rocks close up the tunnel behind you, the trophy will unlock

[top]
Brotherhood
Defeat Francesco

This is a story based trophy. Francesco was Beatrice's brother who was killed during the Crusades and is the main boss at the end of Violence. This battle is easier than the other battles. Use your Scythe Combos and Holy Cross to inflict as much damage as you can while you maneuver around the circular floor. Francesco will throw his sword at you if you are far enough away. You can't block the sword but you can dodge it and it will get stuck in the floor. When it does run up to the sword and press the button to pick up the sword and throw it back at him. After enough damage his shield will break allowing you to hit him as many times as you can without his blocking until he regenerates his shield. I recommend ranged attacks because if you are too close he will grab you and attack then toss you to the ground and by the time you pick yourself up he regenerates his shield.

Eventually he will summon Damned Captains to assist him. They are easily dispatched with Holy Cross powers or your Scythe and continue the same strategy as before as you gradually whittle down his power. Here is a tip if there are Damned Captains in your way when you throw a sword back at him the sword will hit the Captain instead, so clear them out first then throw the sword. After his health is all gone the will appear over his head for you to finish the battle and receive your trophy.

[top]
Lucifer's Match
Defeat the Emporer of the Woeful Realm

This is a story based trophy. Lucifer is the main boss of the game that you will fight at the end of the Treachery Circle of Hell.
There are 3 parts to this boss battle. In the first part he is a giant and slams his fists down onto the ground creating a shockwave that hurts you. Jump over the shockwaves and wait for the divine light to appear in the middle of the pentagram. When the button prompt pops up press it to grapple towards his head. As soon as you do that start spamming the to stun him. Once you do, you can throw your Holy Cross at his midsection for some good damage with the button. He will then use a wind attack to push you to the back of the screen and release two tornados at you. Dodge these tornadoes but if they happen to hit you, press the button to get out of them. Continue to evade until you see the Holy Light again and repeat the same process until his energy is gone. After you bring his energy bar all the way down you will enter the second stage.

The second stage he gets up close and personal. If you have Death's Pillar or Diabolical Hammer it works really well here. He will use several attacks and most are dodgeable. If you happen to counter his sword attack make sure to use a light counter to avoid being hit with the other 3 strikes. I found the most effective strike to be ,,,,.He really only has two menacing attacks, the first he teleports away and slams his fists into the ground creating a damaging shockwave, The second he teleports away and fires bolts of energy rapidly at you that take A LOT of your energy away. You can jump to avoid these but if you happen to have Divine Armor use it here to become invincible and unleash a fury of combos on him while he is shooting at you.I also lie to use a level 3 Ciacco's Bile Relic during this battle to regenerate Mana so this spell can be used often. If you have a Level 3 Divine Armor it is especially useful because it will regenerate your health as well. After you take down 75% of his health there will be a short cutscene and you will enter stage 3.

The final stage he is in the air. You cannot at this time use your Holy Cross because he is immune to the attacks. There will be a command prompt of to grapple to him and then use aerial combos to get in 2-3 hits before he moves. Continue this and avoid his attacks and use Divine Armor when necessary to protect yourself and eventually he will raise the Pentagram edges. At this point press the to grapple around the five of them and once more to grapple to him to start the finishing scene. Once you successfully finish this sequence the trophy is yours and the game is over.

Soul Reaper

You will receive this trophy once you have received a total of 60,000 souls. These souls do not need to be in your possession all at one time just a total of what you have received from the game. If you play your initial playthrough on the Holy Path and play all the Absolving Souls minigames when you find Damned Souls you will probably receive this somewhere around the Heresy level. If you play the Unholy Path first it will probably take you a little longer without the minigame but you should still get this by the end of the game. If not, once you finish the game you can play Resurrection Mode which starts you over with all your souls, weapons, levels, and everything and you will get it shortly.

As you reach the hallway that has Charon's head in it on the left and a Demonic Door to the right, walk up to the head and press the button at the prompt to push his head out of the tower for some souls and the trophy

Perform a 50 hit combo

This is a very easy trophy and will probably happen during the Prisoner battle at Acre before you fight death. While you are fighting you will see a hit counter that adds up when you are successfully hitting the enemy. In this game unlike other games the hit counter doesn't reset if you get hit. It only resets if you don't hit an enemy for a couple seconds. Hit 50 enemies on the counter to achieve this trophy.

Perform a 200 hit combo

While you are fighting you will see a hit counter that adds up when you are successfully hitting the enemy. In this game unlike other games the hit counter doesn't reset if you get hit. It only resets if you don't hit an enemy for a couple seconds. There are several places during the main path that you may get this trophy but you don't need to go out of your way to achieve it because you will get it when you get the 666 combo for the Poetry In Motion trophy. Hit 200 enemies on the counter to achieve this trophy.

[top]
Poetry in Motion
Perform a 666 hit combo

While you are fighting you will see a hit counter that adds up when you are successfully hitting the enemy. In this game unlike other games the hit counter doesn't reset if you get hit. It only resets if you don't hit an enemy for a couple seconds. There are two very good places during the main path that you can get this and the Masterpiece Trophy. Both are in the Challenges in the Fraud Circle of Hell. For both challenges, equip you Coin of Plutus Relic and hopefully you have been using it to raise to Level 3 to help you. Either way the Relic will increase the amount of time that it takes the counter to reset. when the counter hits 666 kills the trophy is yours.

The First place is in the 3rd challenge, Simonists. You must kill 5 enemies while they are in the air but if you do not do that the enemies keep respawning. The enemies that spawn will be 1 Guardian Demon and 2-3 Damned Captains. I prefer to use my Holy Cross and attack from a distance to minimize the chances of being hit. It also seems more effective and has a wider range, if it's fully powered, than the Scythe against the shield carrying Captains. Either way use your Scythe or your Cross and continue to move around the platform racking up hits. DO NOT use the button sequences to Absolve or Punish the enemy as it takes to long and the counter will most likely reset. This area is based on playing on Zealot or above if you are playing on classic try one of the other areas listed below.

This will probably work really well even on Classic

The second place is the 10th challenge, Falsifiers You must kill all enemies to complete the challenge. This one has a set number of enemies to spawn unlike the other, but there are A LOT so you should be fine. I recommend doing it on the first because there is not a set amount in case you get close but then mess up and have to start your count over. Use the same methods as the first are that I described and if you are using your Scythe use the attacks instead of the heavy attacks with and stay away from redemption mode because the enemies will die to fast and not take as many hits.

Kill 30 Minions

The Minions will be the first enemy you face in the graveyard after watching Beatrice being flown away with the Dark Spirit. Use whatever means you like to destroy them and once you kill 30 you will receive this trophy. You will most likely get this trophy before you even enter the Gates of Hell.

Kill 30 Demons

The Demons are the stronger, larger enemies you will face that you will first see on the level In Limbo. They usually attack in groups of 2-3 and cannot be grabbed and Absolved with the Scythe like the minions. You will usually see them in groups with smaller enemies throughout the game and can take a beating until the prompt appears over their heads indicating you can now Absolve or Punish them. All of their attacks are blockable with the exception of the the Flame sword attack which is slow and easily dodgeable, but if it hits you it will knock you down. You will probably unlock this trophy sometime in the Greed chapter after you have killed your 30th Demon

Kill 20 Unbaptized Babies

The Unbaptized Children are little demonic children with blades for hands that you will first see in In Limbo. After the hallway with Charon's head lodged into it when you enter the Demonic Door on the right and there will be a short cutscene followed by a horde of them. They are easy enough to dispatch, you can grab them with your Scythe with the and Absolve or Punish them or you can use your blade to finish them off. There will be a second encounter with them once you go down the hallway and back outside immediately following this encounter. Finish off these babies as well in whatever way you feel is best for the little buggers and you should get the trophy by the end of the second encounter. If for some reason you don't as soon as you finish off twenty total the trophy is yours.

Kill 5 Gluttons

The Gluttons are giant, obese demons that you first encounter in the Gluttony Circle of Hell. They are very slow and can take several hits to finish off but are fairly easy. They have two projectile attacks, one from the front and one from the "rear". There is only 1 Glutton in the Gluttony level and although there aren't nearly as many of the Gluttons as other enemies, you should kill enough during the regular storyline to get the trophy during the challenges of the Fraud Circle of Hell. Once you kill 5 of them the trophy is yours.

Kill 5 Heretics

You will first encounter a Heretic in the Heresy level. They are a demon with a purple orb over their head and use purple lightning attacks to damage you. They are very fast and are immune to Holy Damage from your cross. If they appear with a group of enemies ell the enemies with the purple orb will also be immune until the Heretic dies. There are enough Heretics in the Heresy level that you will get this trophy by the end of the level.

Countermeasures
Kill 20 enemies using a counter move

When Dante is about to be attacked, if you press the button he will block, and if you press it right before an enemy attacks you the game will slow down and that is your cue to enter either ,, or to execute a counter attack. For this trophy you must not only counter 20 enemies but they also must die as a result of the counter-attack. I recommend attacking them a little to weaken them, and then wait for them to attack and counter them with the for the heavy attack to do the most damage. After you kill 20 enemies from counter attacks you will receive this trophy.

Open 20 Mana Fountains

Mana Fountains are the stone basins with the purple water and pools located throughout every level of Hell that give you magic. Simply walk up to them and press the to engage them and then mash the button to break them and release their soul power. You can also smash them for the same effect if you are riding on a beast at the time. For this trophy all you must do is break open 20 throughout the game. If you break open all the ones you see whether you need mana or not, you should receive this trophy somewhere in the Anger Circle of Hell.

Gates of Hell
Defeat all enemy waves in the Gates of Hell Arena

The Gates of Hell is an arena that unlocks when you complete the game on any difficulty level, with 50 levels of monsters to battle and a time clock that reduces during battles. The arena battles aren't hard, however you must very careful to manage your time so you don't run out of time before finishing all 50 levels. That being said you can add time to your clock by meeting these criteria:
  1. Finish a round without taking any damage +15 seconds
  2. Use an Absolve or Punish finishing move +5 seconds
  3. Finish a round +30 seconds
Once you finish all 50 levels the Trophy Unlocks.

Gates of Hell Tips and Strategies
  • Much like in the regular story the Holy Cross is very effective in the arena, especially if it's powered up because you can hit multiple enemies at once.
  • The Divine Armor at Level 3 can be your best friend in the arena because you can be invincible and recharge your health at the same time.
  • You gain 5 seconds for Punishing or Absolving enemies but the clock continues to run while you are doing it, so you should only use this on smaller quick kill enemies such as Minions and Unbaptized Babies.
  • The clock stops in between rounds so use this time to use your Divine Armor to recharge your energy.
  • If you equip The Ciacco's Bile Relic you can recharge Mana during your battles and in between rounds so you can always have full Mana for the beginning of each round.
  • Save your redemption attacks to use against tougher enemies such as Heretics and the Beast Rider.
