[top]Tips & Strategies

  • Choosing the Difficulty - Normal mode is not that challenging, and only slightly more challenging that Easy mode. The roadmap suggests you start and play on Normal the whole time, unless you need to cleanup some trophies. Please note the following: once you switch down from Normal, you cannot switch back up.
  • Saving - After you complete the main missions for each level, visit Pinky and tell her you want to "Stay Here" to trigger an autosave. You can also tell her you want to travel to another part of the level. If you die and you're out of lives, you'll restart at the previous autosave, and that might be pretty far back, so save often.
  • Getting Around - You learn early on that you can target graydians/enemies/crates/switches/elevators by holding and then jump on them with . This makes jumping over bigger gaps or indoor gaps with celings much easier, and ensures accuracy when you're trying to land on smaller platforms.
  • Playing Speed - Being impatient can cost you lots of time. You are under a time constraint during every level. You can add more time to your total by painting groups of buildings and then painting the citizens that you released, or by defeating enemies. The worst thing you can do is get in a hurry and make stupid mistakes, so move with purpose, but also with discretion.
  • Using Water to Your Advantage - Water is a good way (but not the only one, you can grab a powerup) to get ink off of you and to extinguish yourself if you're on fire, so it can save you're life. Also, you can use it to go blanc, making you invisible to enemies. If you have fewer than 10 paint points, jumping in water and pressing will fill you up to 10. Sometimes this makes a big difference! Finally, there will be times where it's faster for you to rinse off your own color as opposed to slamming an inkbot, waiting for it to refill, and slamming it again.
  • Travel Prepared - Often you'll be heading to an objective and you'll need a specific color of paint to complete it. Pause the game and review your objective to find out which color(s), then grab some and tackle it.

Two Important Tips I Got Directly from Communication With BlueTongue (the Developers)
  • Trophies are awarded when you exit levels only, except for Pistion Partisan. So if you're going back for collectibles, make sure you play all the way through and tell Pinky you're ready to leave.
  • The BlueTongue QA team has confirmed that you CAN earn Keepin' It Real by playing all levels in sequence on Easy.

Make Backup Saves - One gamer has followed all the advice in this guide but STILL had problems with Every Picture glitching. Greenclaws Offers the following advice:

Before, I got that pickup and the gallery didn't unlock and so the trophy didn't unlock and there wouldn've been no way to ever make it unlock again because all the collectables would have been gotten, but not aknowledged.

[top]Roadmap

Step 1: Normal Difficulty Playthrough; No Upgrades; Nab All Collectibles; "S" Class Every Level. You're going to shoot for almost all of the trophies for this game in one playthough. Your mindset should be to treat each of the twelve levels as individual mini-games. The format for every level is about the same, except for two things I'll note: in Level 5, try to earn Piston Partisan, and in level 12 (the final level) you'll need to collect/complete everything before you meet the boss as you won't be given time afterwards. I'll explain more below.
For each level, follow this general strategy:

  • a) Follow a collectibles guide. Note that in part b) you'll be going for the cleanup gold medal. On account of this, realize that you can skip spending time earning collectibles that come from destroying crates, etc. since you'll be guaranteed to ge them while you're working for your "cleanup" gold award. If you don't get every collectible in a level the first time through, you CAN come back and get them later. If you do that, you must make sure you finish the level completely. This means talking to Pinky, telling her you're ready to leave, and getting to the final-score screen.
  • b) Earn all three gold medals. This means i) paint all trees (environmental), ii) save all citizens (liberation), and iii) destroy all INKT paraphernalia (cleanup).
  • c) Achieve "S" class ranking. Completing each level pops a unique trophy, and below each of those unique trophies I've listed the score requirements necessary for achieving an "S" class ranking. I've also listed some values that will help you predict whether or not you'll have earned enough points after completing each level, factoring in all the bonuses. Before you tell Pinky you're ready to exit a level, make sure you do a bit of math to ensure you'll finish with enough points (bonuses included) to earn "S" class. If you exit a level and you don't earn "S" class, you will have to go back and do everything again. Everything resets, except for your collected lightbulbs and gallery items. You DO NOT want to have to re-do an entire level and go for "S" class.

Step 2: Mop Up. If you failed to achieve any "S" class rankings during your main playthrough, you can downgrade the difficulty level to "Easy", purchase a bunch of upgrades, and blast your way through the levels you require. If you missed out on Piston Partisan, see it's trophy description for help. Finally, purchase all upgrades for Blob/Pinky. It is okay to purchase upgrades and use them on a level if you're stuck SO LONG AS you come back and replay that level on NORMAL without them. Playing on Easy counts as using upgrades, so that is not an option.

You'll final get to put an end to Comrade Black's oppression. Here are some notes for that boss fight:
  • This fight is similar to that against Monster in that you'll be completing colored circuits in order to damage Comrade Black. You'll have to stomp a switch, paint the circuit, and fill up the color sink at the end of the path in the core of the satellite. Along each circuit's path you'll have to charge-attack color conductors, sometimes quite a few of them, so you'll be leaving the path to go find paint quite frequently.
  • Completing a circuit and filling a color sink damages Comrade Black. In response, he'll activate more of the traps on the floor and unleash more enemies at you. You have to damage him six times to get to the final stage of the fight, and in that time you'll complete paint circuits that span each of the six primary and secondary colors.
  • As your opposition grows, Pinky provides more Haz-Mat and Regen powerups. Collect these whenever you can.
  • You can essentially ignore all the enemies and solely focus on completing circuits.
  • After you damage Comrade Black six times he'll separate himself into about a hundred little clones of himself. Just take them all out to finish the fight and the game. Use the Regen and Super-Charge powerups to your advantage.

"S" Class Calculation
Goal: 1,300,000 points.

This level differs from the previous eleven in that you will not have time to cleanup after you finish the main missions and before you exit the level. Instead, Comrade Black offers you the chance to complete side missions on the way to your showdown with him. You will want to do these in order to find Lightbulbs, Gallery Items, and Style Swirls. In addition, the side missions are where you'll find the citizens to free, the trees to paint, and the INKT crates you'll need to smash for your three gold awards. If you're playing on Normal, you really need to move quickly through everything.

INKT smasher
All Gold Clean-up awards completed

You earn a cleanup award by destroying the INKT paraphernalia (primarily crates) in a level. Destroy every INKT item in a level to earn a gold cleanup award for that level. All twelve levels have INKT items and you must earn a gold cleanup award in every level to pop this trophy. This trophy is not dependent on difficulty or upgrades and you can replay levels for these awards if you miss them the first time around.

The People's Hero
All Gold Liberation awards completed

You earn a liberation award by freeing (and usually painting) the citizens (usually graydians) in a level. Free and paint every citizen in a level to earn a gold liberation award for that level. All twelve levels have citizens and you must earn a gold liberation award in every level to pop this trophy. This trophy is not dependent on difficulty or upgrades and you can replay levels for these awards if you miss them the first time around.

Nature Lover
All Gold Environment awards completed

You earn an environment award by painting the trees in a level. Paint every tree in a level to earn a gold environment award for that level. All twelve levels have trees and you must earn a gold environment award in every level to pop this trophy. This trophy is not dependent on difficulty or upgrades and you can replay levels for these awards if you miss them the first time around.

Nothing but the best
All story levels completed to "S" class

On each of the 12 levels, the game assigns you a letter grade based on the total number of points you earn. What does it take to get the highest ("S") ranking? The short version is: you have to do everything you can possibly to in a level. This includes freeing every citizen, painting every tree, and destroying all INKT items. In addition, you'll probably need to collect every purple Style Swirl in each level. After you finish all the main story missions, green challenge missions will become available. It is critical that you complete all of these as well. So why do all of these things? Well here's a summary of the points you receive from doing "everything" you can do in a level:

  • Gold Awards - 50,000 points each
  • Green Challenges - 10,000 points each
  • Style Swirls - 5,000 points each
  • Small Color Atoms - 100 points each
  • Large Color Atoms - 1,000 points each

So let's say you earn all three gold awards, finish 17 green challenges, and collect 10 Style Swirls on one level. This would mean that 3 x 50,000 + 17 x 10,000 + 10 x 5,000 = 150,000 + 170,000 + 50,000 = 370,000 points would get added to the total you see in the upper-left corner of your screen. I've broken this math down specifically for each level in the story-related trophy associated with each of them.

It is critical that you assess whether or not you'll achieve enough points on a level before telling Pinky that you're finished. After you use Pinky to exit a level, just about everything in that level resets. Your score, gold awards, and Style Swirls all disappear. So if you miss out on earning the "S" rank on a level you will need to redo everything you have done (except for collecting the Lghtbulbs and Gallery Items) again, and more. I've provided the requirements for "S" class in each level under the story-related trophy description associated with that level.

Maximum Blob
Blob and Pinky completely upgraded

You can upgrade Blob and Pinky's attributes from the games Main Menu or by visiting the blue lightbulb icon found in each level.

Keep in mind that you need to finish each level without upgrades for platinum. It may be a good idea for you to save this trophy for last. In addition, you'll need to find every Lightbulb in the game in order to have enough to buy every upgrade.

Note that you can also "Remix" or reset all of your upgrades via the Main Menu.

Every picture
Every Gallery pickup collected

Gallery Items are one of two kinds of collectibles you need to find for platinum. Collecting the purple Style Swirls is not required for platinum, but I highly recommend finding them as they give you 5,000 apiece towards your "S" class ranking.

Gallery Items look like shiny silver mini-paintings with a similarly-colored paintbrush hovering in front of them. These can be found in every level and there are 100 in total throughout the game. Many are found in hiding places but a few come from smashing crates.

While you're earning these, know that if you die (run out of lives) or quit the level before either triggering an autosave (complete objectives or visit Pinky and do not leave, but either use him to travel (or tell him you want to "stay here") or exiting the level by telling Pinky you're ready to go, the game won't save them. So save often. Note that when you do finally exit the level via Pinky, Gallery Items do not reset.

If you miss any of these on your main playthrough you CAN come back to get them, but you MUST finish the entire level you went back to. This means doing every story mission, telling Pinky you're ready to leave, and getting to the final-score screen for that level. Many thanks to fatcap for confirming this.

Totally inspired
Every Inspiration pickup collected or earned

Lightbulbs (Inspiration pickups) are one of two kinds of collectibles you need to find for platinum. Collecting the purple Style Swirls is not required for platinum, but I highly recommend finding them as they give you 5,000 apiece towards your "S" class ranking.

Inspiration pickups look like big lit-up lightbulbs. These can be found in every level and there are 480 in total throughout the game. Collect lightbulbs by smashing crates, completing green challenges, and looking in hiding spots.

While you're earning these, know that if you die (run out of lives) or quit the level before either triggering an autosave (complete objectives or visit Pinky and do not leave, but either use him to travel or tell him you want to stay here) or exiting the level by telling Pinky you're ready to go, the game won't save them. So save often. Note that when you do finally exit the level via Pinky, Lightbulbs do not reset.

If you miss any of these on your main playthrough you CAN come back to get them, but you MUST finish the entire level you went back to. This means doing every story mission, telling Pinky you're ready to leave, and getting to the final-score screen for that level. Many thanks to fatcap for confirming this.

INKT informed
Pinky's Guide to Inkies completed

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. As you progress through the game you'll encounter new and tougher enemies. The game makes a big introduction to each new type of enemy (Inky), giving you info about their attack style and how to defeat them, so you can't possibly miss this trophy.

Pinky to the rescue
Blob and Pinky played a level together

This is the easiest trophy of the bunch. While you're playing, turn on a second controller and use it to join the game as Pinky. The trophy pops almost immediately; you do not have to play the whole level with both characters to pop this trophy.

Keepin' it real
All levels completed without upgrades

Complete each of the twelve levels in the game without upgrades to pop this trophy. I communicated via email directly with BlueTongue, the developers of de Blob 2. They assured me that their QA team confirms you CAN earn this trophy on Easy or Normal mode, but you have to play all levels through in sequence. Also note that you do not need to earn "S" class ranking in order to complete a level.

Piston partisan
Completed 10 continuous piston jumps

The perfect place to earn this trophy can be found in level 5. A couple of the missions/challenges will require you to visit the outdoor amphitheater area. You'll know you're in the right place when you see a wooden stage, wooden stadium-seating benches, and about 7 piston jumps all in the same area. Time each successive piston jump and hop around in a circle-like path until this trophy pops. Jump from one piston to another 10 times to pop this trophy.

Medal of Color
All story levels completed in normal mode

At the beginning of the game you'll be given the option to choose between Easy and Normal difficulty. Choose Normal. Note that you can purchase upgrades and use them while earning this trophy. Complete each of the twelve levels on Normal to pop this trophy. Also note that you do not need to earn "S" class ranking in order to complete a level.

Blob survivor
Completed a level in a single playthrough without dying

Dying is not the same thing as running out of paint. You must have zero paint points and then take damage in order to die. You can get killed by an enemy, burn to death, drown in ink, get electrocuted, frozen, etc. and die. You'll probably fall off the edge of various levels a few times too, and this definitely counts as dying.

Having said that, relax because it's next to impossible to die in the first level, so you'll probably pop this trophy without even thinking about it.

If for some reason you struggle with this, purchase a bunch of upgrades and downgrade the difficulty setting (after your main playthrough is finished).
