[top]Tips & Strategies

Challenge Mode Tips

As you complete the main story every chapter will unlock a challenge mode chapter. Challenge mode plays like an old arcade rail shooter, no story just a series of 10 waves of enemies for you to survive. You will earn points by killing and dismembering necromorphs and opening crates ,ammo pickups and perfect reloads.

When you select a challenge mode map you will be given the option to play on any difficulty playing on normal will be fine and make killing the necromorphs that much easier.

You will want to wait till after you have completed the game AND wait until you have all of your weapon upgrades or at least 3 or the 4upgrades for each weapon. When you start a challenge chapter you will be given the rivet gun and you will get to pick your weapon of choice I would recomend picking the line gun as it has great damage even at 3/4 upgraded it can take down most enemies with a single shot and a descent rate of fire. After three or four rounds you will be given another weapon from the weapons your have collected, this is why you want all weapons upgraded as much as possible, you dont want to get stuck with a underpowered weapon.

There is a timer in the corner of the screen, ignore that as time really has no factor in your score, the most important thing to beating the challenge mode scores is not getting hit and keeping your kill streak. The more enemies you kill in a row without getting hit the higher you will notice your kill points are, you will get 250 points for every limb you take off and 500 points for your first kill. Each following kill will add 50 points to your kill total. So your first will be 500 then 550 then 600 and so on.

Another important factor is stasis management. You don't want to rely solely on your stasis to keep the necros at bay. Many of the available weapons are great at stalling incoming waves of enemies. Example, the Arc Welding guns secondary fire releases a ball of electricity that arcs out to any and all surrounding necros letting you get in a few more percise shots and conserve ammo on a gun that you are more comfortable using close up. Another great example is the ripper, yes its kinda akward to use on close up enemies but its secondary fire shoots the buzz blades with a very lethal ranged attack.

Ammo conservation is also key in the later challenges. You get a rivet gun with unlimited ammo so use it. You will notice that enemies will not spawn until you have finished off the batch infront of you. If you take out their legs and they are crawling slowly towards you dont waste any of your ammo instead switch to your rivet gun and finish them off. You never know when those last few shots you wasted in your plasma cutter may have made all of the difference. Also dont underestimate the rivet gun, when fully upgraded it takes off lims just as good or even better then the plasma cutter. If enemies spawn far away no need to send weapon fire sailing just for the necros to side step it pick at them with the rivet gun until they get too close for comfort.

I would recomend at least playing thru the chapters once or twice before going for you "real run". You want to be prepared for what enemies come from where at all times. One of the problem enemies are the leapers (the ones with two arms and a tail that crawl around) are very tricky as they appear and move rather fast towards you and sometimes spawn righ underneath you. When you see one you will want to lead them just a little so you dont send your shot sailing behind them. The only other problem enemies are the Lurkers (baby looking ones with three arms sticking our of their back) you wont always see them as some of the levels are dark, but thats not the problem they will hide behind something and only expose their arms around the corner barely sticking out and very hard to see. You can however use your telekenesis on their white projectiles and fire them back another great tip for ammo conservation.

Once you start trying for keeps. If you get hit early in the chapter dont worry about it, but three or four times or your just not getting the right weapons, you might want to think about going ahead and restarting. Most of these can be any where from 8 - 20 minutes each and you dont want to waste your time only to fall short.

[top]Roadmap

1. Complete the game on Hard and grab as many upgrades as you can. Its not much more difficult than regular difficulty and will prepare you for impossible.

2. Complete the game on Impossible. If you got alot of your upgrades during your first run it will make impossible a breese. Try and focus on not taking any damage while doing this run thru and work on getting your 5 star rateings. Also take note the chapters you did not get all of you audio/test logs and upgrades, it will tell you at the end of the chapter under the collectibles tab how many you collected. But you cant see which levels collectibles you are missing other than at this time.

3. Go back and play via chapter select any level you still need a Five Star rating on by playing on regular difficulty.

4. Start Challenge Mode. Now that you have all of your weapon upgrades you are now ready to jump into challenge mode. Complete all ten and enjoy your new

My tips above will help with all challenges but this challenge alone I cannot stress enough the ammo conservation and rivet gun use. Ammo crates are very few in this level. But there a few waves that enemies will spawn far away giving you enough time to complete the entire waves using only the rivet gun.

[top]
Get A Medic
Beat the top score on the "Life Support Room" Challenge

Complete the Life Support challenge with a score of 260,010 or better.

See the tips and strategies section above for help.

My tips above will help with all challenges but this challenge alone can be tricky as it takes place in a round room in zero-g, and the camera will be whipping everywhere making it very hard to be accurate. The camera, will several times, be looking at an enemy in the distance while one is right underneath you hitting you and there is nothing you can do about it. You might have to play this one several times due to the camera shake. I would, for ammo conservation sake, only fire at the leapers until they are right up on you, use your judgment. Inbetween some waves you will have to select a different area of the map to jump to, dont rush wait till your stasis has recharged before proceding.

There are only two enemy types the lurkers and leapers the two most troublesome enemies in the challenges. I recomend picking the line gun or the force gun from the start. they both have a wide area of damage, and the line gun can kill most of them in one shot. When it switches to the lurkers take out your rivet gun and pick at them, you might have to shake your glowworm to be able to see them they hide very well in this dark level.

[top]
You Need Glasses Partner
Survive the shuttle flight with less than 10% shields intact

NOTE: The following was playing on hard difficulty and may be slightly different on an easier or harder difficulty.

At the beginning of Chapter 4 your will be riding on the survey shuttle vestri, headed to the USG Ishimura. And for the first part of this trophy you will be asked to shoot asteroids that are going to collide with your ship. Focus of the glowing red asteroids, the others should not do any damage to your ship. At the end of this sequence try and keep your shields around 80% by the time you leave the asteroid field.

The second part of this trophy has you defending againts ADS cannon fire from the Ishimura. The Ishimura will fire clusters of four shots at you. You can take all of these impacts except for one to three clusters. Simply take the gunfire until your shields are at 10% or under and then defend your ship from any other incomming ADS cannon fire.

[top]
Twice the Firepower
Play coopertaively with a second player

A second player can join in at any time at the beginning of a chapter or anytime in the middle. Simply add another controller and the trophy will be given.

[top]
Sharpshooter
Shoot the box hanging from the crane on the surfice of Aegis 7.

At the beginning of chapter 1 as you suit-up and leave the first door. You can see a crane in the distance. Shoot down the box. Hitting the box doesn't seem to knock it down but cutting the line that suspends it does. To make this trophy easier you can go back using the chapter select option after beating the game and you will be asked to pick a primary weapon of the weapons you have collected. Choose a weapon with a wide area of damage such as the Plasma Cutter or the Line Gun. This will be easier that trying to hit it with the Rivet Gun and having to restart the chapter everytime you miss.

[top]
Too Much Firepower?
Open the secret weapon storage in P-sec

During chapter 2 you will make your way back into the P-sec office, and find Lexine. Once she joins your crew you will exit P-sec and you will go into free look for a short period of time. Look directly to the left and shoot the purple fuse to the right of the door. If you shoot the fuse before time runs out you will be awarded the trophy and access to the P-sec storage

[top]
What Did you Find?
Take a minor detour in the megavents

During chapter 3 you will get an option to go left and cut thru the fleshy material or to the right down a ladder. Choose to go left, after cutting thru a few of the fleshy barriers you will open a supply room, and you will be given this trophy.

[top]
Taking Your Time, McNeil?
Admire the view in the crashed shuttle

After the shuttle sequence of chapter four your group will start putting on suits to leave the ship. You will breifly glance over at Lexine who is bending over. Give her a pinch on the bottom with your telekenesis to be given this trophy.

[top]
Flushed
Defeat the giant necromorph in the water tunnels

Easily the most annoying boss in the game and also the first. You will encounter the giant necromorph at the end of chapter 6. If you have a pulse rifle at the start of the chapter good, dont get rid of it and save your ammo. If not I suggest you pick up the contact beam and arc welding gun thruout the level. During the first part of the fight the giant will have two tenticles up in the air with yellow spots, when the three fingers open either shoot it with the pulse rifle if you have it or have your contact beam charged ready to shoot when it opens. When you move to the side of the giant you will have to shoot the tenticle again to avoid being hit. You will look at a hole with a spinning blade use your stasis on it and you will climb in and it will damage the giants tenticle. Repeat for the other side.

The second part of the battle you will have to be quick and pick up a red floating barrel from the water with your telekenesis. Watch which tenticle opens up and shoot the barrel at it to destroy it. Repeat for the other side.

The third part of the battle the giant will shoot pods at you. It will shoot one at a time except for every third or fourth time it will shoot three pods so be carefull to catch them all with your telekenesis to avoid damage. Grab the pods and fire them at the enemies weak spot that is rapidly moving back and forth at water level. In between pod throws hit it with the arc welding guns primary fire, that makes it easier to hit than just firing bullets at it just hopeing to hit the fast moving weak spot.

[top]
Lexine, I Told You To Be Quiet!
Defeat the Brute

In chapter 7 you will come across the Brute. He will only have two attacks the first is to charge straight at you. Use your stasis when he is close and you will move to the side of him allowing you to shoot the yellow weak spots on his shoulder joint areas. His other attack is to shoot mucus pods at you. When he does this just catch them with your telekenesis and fire them back at him. After enough damage is delt you he will be defeated and you will be given this trophy.

[top]
Sack Blast
Defeat the giant necromorph on the hull of the Ishimura

This boss is located at the end of chapter 9, But before you get there you will need to stock up. When you reach shuttle bay 47, Lexine will run to the left and you will go straight ahead and go into a free look. Look to the right and pick up the Pulse Riffle and ammo around it. Do not use the Pulse Rifle unless you absolutely have to until you reach this boss. If you miss this one, then before you go out the big circular air lock for the space walk there is a Pulse Rifle to the left on the floor.

Once you reach this boss he will have two arms up in the air with the yellow weak spots hidden. He will slowly turn one of them over at a time giving you time to attack the weak spots. If you do not deal enough damage he will slap you. None of weapons seem to fire at a fast enough rate to stop him from hitting you except for the pulse rifle. So when he turns the weak spot towards you hit it with the Pulse Rifle. It will repeat this three or four times and move to a different attack.

Secondly its mouth will drop down and go over your head. Switch your rivet gun here, you will notice yellow spots starting to appear. Take your time and be accurate but shoot them before they get too big. Once they are so big they will bust, and if too many bust in a row you will be eaten by the monster. Once you have shot enough of the yellow spots its mouth will start retracting back to the monster. as it is retracting back the lips will also be yellow shoot them a couple times until they turn grey.

The third attack his mouth will open and a chian of balls will come out, use either the line gun or the pulse rifle if you have enough ammo to spare. shoot all of the redish gold balls until they turn black. Once they are damaged enough they will exploded and Leapers will appear, I recomend taking them out with the line gun since they come at you in a straight line and the Line Gun Has a wide damage area. Sometimes one of the balls will still remail but be very black shoot it if it is still there or you will be hit with it.

He will then restart this three attack process the only thing that changes is that the third step less and less balls apear until he is finally defeated.

[top]
Skill - Reload
Complete any level with at least 80% Perfect Reloads

When your weapon reloads either manually or by ammo counter hitting zero a line will start going clockwise around your aiming recticle. You will also notice a grey area on the left side of the recticle press the reload button while the blue line is in this grey area to acheive a perfect reload. Get a perfect reload on four of every five times your reload for a single chapter to be given this trophy.

[top]
Skill - Accuracy
Complete and level with at least 80% Weapon Accuracy

For this trophy I would recomend using the plasma cutter or the line gun if possible, and avoid using guns that spray bullets like the pulse riffle. Choose a level you are familure with and play on an easy difficulty and just take your time making sure each shot lands. Go ahead and let the necromorphs get close to you since they tend to sidestep your shot if they are too far away when you shoot. If you land four out of five shots for a single chapter you will be given this trophy.

[top]
Skill - Stasis Accuracy
Complete any level with at lest 80% Stasis Accuracy

You will need to land four out of every five stasis shots your fire. This trophy is kinda tricky if you try and use the stasis too much in a level, as if you try and hit a necro with the stasis that is far away they will sidestep your shot. Choose a chapter you are comfortable with and let a necro get it real close and land your stasis shot and refrain from using it against any other enemies in the chapter. At the end of the chapter you will be given this trophy.

[top]
A Star Is Born
