Oh, so you want to play Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut? Sure, but let me warn you, that this Twin-Peaks-ish horror game is far from your standard run-the-mill Silent Hill clone. It's filled with weird and bizarre elements which sole purpose is to confuse you and giving you a false sense of security. You're not secure. Never. Ever. Though to be honest the game is not scary at all. It's more of a mystery type game.
You play as FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan.... or rather his imaginary friend Zach. A mysterious murder has happened in the village of Greenvale, and you're hired to figure it out. It doesn't help that the town is filled with scary twins, zombies, and a strange hooded figure.
Will you ever solve the mystery and make it out alive?
The game has gotten infamous by having the most polarized reviews. It's got a 68 out of 100 on Metacritic with reviews ranging from 20 to 100.

[top]Tips & Strategies

There are two major components to this game:

Fighting:
  • Learn to aim your gun. It can be finicky.
  • Melee weapons can kill in one blow, but they wear off quickly.
  • Always have at least one melee weapon handy.
  • If you don't have a melee weapon prepared, always take a good distance between you and the enemy. It can take quite a few shots.
  • Completing certain sidequests can give you Infinite weapons, which are guns that have unlimited ammo and melee weapons that don't get destroyed.
Exploration:
  • Get memorized who is where at what time period and with what weather. It will save you some time.
  • Plan ahead of what you want to do.
  • Remember to get the trading cards!
  • Start off by buying a fishing rod from the Milk Barn. It helps a lot.
And always remember to save a lot. This game does have a few freezing issues.

There are two very simple steps to this:



In this part, you basically go through the story mode, having fun, completing the sidequests as you go. The game is around 15-20 hours without sidequests, so it should still take you a bit of time.

This is an introduction via a move through the forest. Once you meet up with the Sheriff and Deputy you get the trophy.

Episode 1 CLEARED
George, the perpetrator is just like you. He's passionate about women. He's a passionate kisser. This was a "kiss of death."

This trophy is story-related and can't be missed!
This first episode is the longest. It consists of chapters 2 through 7, and I recommend getting most of the trading cards here.

Here is a rundown of the trickier parts:

Finding the keys: They're downstairs in a cell.

Chess Puzzle:
It's the order of the appearance of the chess pieces in the sentence.

Other world hospital: Pretty run-the-mill. There are not many melee weapons though.

Hiding from the Killer: Hide a not-obvious place. Like under the table.

Episode 2 (part 1) CLEARED
So Becky is Miss Stiletto Heel. And she gave the locket to the twins...Must be the "special secret" Lilly told us about, Zach.

This part is rather short lasting from chapter 8 through 10.

Hiding from the Killer: Again the underside of the table is a pretty good place to hide.

Episode 2 (part 2) CLEARED
Zach, Diane has become the third victim of our killer. And nada from questioning Nick...Nothing. Got no new leads from questioning Nick.

This trophy is story-related and can't be missed!
Another short part lasting from chapter 11 through 13.

Here is a spoiler-full rundown of the trickier parts:

Car chasing: Stay close and don't fall behind, but don't get too close or he will notice you.

Art Gallery Shooting: Very run of the mill, but the tree section is a bit tricky. Shoot the apples off the tree. Now place the apples so they match the paintings, that is red apple = adult, green apple = child and rotten apple = old man.

Episode 3 CLEARED
Zach, OK. So it's not bonus footage, it's still part of the main feature. The perpetrator is exactly who I thought it was.

Episode 3 is pretty long too. It consists of chapter through chapter 14-20 don't forget to finish up sidequests.

Here is a spoiler-full rundown of the trickier parts:

Soldiers and umbrellas: From left to right the soldiers needs to get assigned to room 3, room 5 and room 6. This is determined by the clues from the umbrellas. Next puzzle the solution is from left to right 14, 23 and 26, but how do we push the statues so it matches. Push them on the grid so the statues are on the coordinates, when added is one of the three numbers.

Hiding from the Killer: TABLE!!!!

Light switches: Left light = twice, right light = once.

Episode 4 CLEARED
Ah, right, he doesn't have a "tattoo" on his back. But there is a "pattern" there.

This trophy is story-related and can't be missed!
Episode 4 is short lasting chapter 21 and 22.

There really isn't anything to note except for a shooting sections, where they drop keys.

Episode 5 CLEARED
Zach, I need you to pray with me. Pray that things have not gone too far. All we can do is go to the location written in Kaysen's letter.

Episode 5 is not long either lasting chapter 23 and 24.

Here is a spoiler-full rundown of the trickier parts:

Boss battle: Shoot from a distance. If you have acquired an Infinite weapon use that. He will attack you, and you do a QTE to escape. This will reveal a scar on the back. Shoot that. Next form!: Shoot the scar on his face. Then there will be a QTE-ish section where the attacker tries to get you with an axe. Shoot the axe.

Episode 6 CLEARED
My name is York. Me and you, we'll always be together. OK, Zach? I'm you, and you are me. Now, give me your hand.

This trophy is story-related and can't be missed!
Episode 6 only lasts chapter 25 and it is the shortest episode in the game.

Here is a spoiler-full rundown of the trickier parts:

Timed part: The trick here is to just speedrun it, and not killing any enemies.

Last Boss:
First form: Shoot away with the infinite Magnum (which I recommend picking up before this). Dodge the boss' rolling attacks and beware of QTE's.
Second form: One big QTE.
Third form: Shoot the doll in the boss' hand and that will eventually give you some very... human stepping stones. Climb them and fire away at the doll once again.

Episode 7 CLEARED
Then this is goodbye, Zach. Thank you for everything.

This episode is the epilogue and there really isn't much more to it than getting the rest of the sidequests.

Delivery Man Q
Follow up on Becky's friends and find "Delivery Man Q" from Anna's diary. Sneak into the house of someone whose name starts with a Q, find evidence and take it to Becky.

How to: Becky wont come out of her room. If you've completed Sidequest #28 you should have Anne's diary. Show that to Becky, and she will start avoiding your questions. We suspect it's Quint. Head over to his house while he is at home (around 16:00). He will spend a lot of his time on his motorcycle, but sometimes he will turn around to a nearby bookshelf. When he does that examine the chopper without him seeing you to get a [Bag of Red Dust] and show it to Becky to complete the sidequest.

Guardian of the Art Gallery
Diane is hiding something. Find the painting of [The Girl in the Woods] slumbering somewhere in the art gallery and give it to her. She may open up to you.

How to: You can get this quest right after meeting Diane in the story line. To get to the painting you need to get to the second junction between rooms where you will be able to go downstairs to a plaza with a window with a box under it. Climb on the box and look through the window. You would be able to see a door locked with a padlock. Shoot the lock and go upstairs again and go through the unlocked door to find the painting. Grab it and show it to Diane.

Memories of Anna
Someone is taking walks in Anna's forest in the early afternoon when the weather is clear. Find this person and hand over the [Out of Focus Picture] from the twins. It could be a new lead!

George has lost his beloved [Arnold] somewhere in the Sheriff's Office. He can't train without him! Find what he's looking for and get it back to him. Help him get his groove back.

George's mother is sick and so he wants to get her favorite flower for her. Find the [Flower with No Name] that only blooms in the rain and take it to George when he's home after 21:00.

How to: You'll see flower icons on your map when it is raining. You basically just need to go to one of these locations when it rains. It doesn't matter which one, so just pick the closest one. Head there and pick up a [Flower with No Name] and return it to George.

Nice Try Cooking
Emily only ever cooks at home on evenings when it is raining. Find the "Fermented Dairy Products" that she needs for her next dish and help her out.


Availability: Chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13.

How to: You need to get some Cheddar Cheese for Emily. You can buy that at either the Milk Barn or from Polly at the hotel. To talk to Emily you need to wait till 18:00-20:00 AND when it is raining. Return her the cheese and the quest is complete.

Another Nice Try Cooking
Emily only ever cooks at home on evenings when it is raining. Find the "Vegetables that become sweet when heated" that she needs for her next dish and help her out.

Find the "Something chewy and salty" "something soft with two colors" "Yellow Sauce" that Emily needs for her next dish and help her out.

A customer at the Galaxy of Terror has practically been stalking Carol, causing trouble for her. Drive off this "Unwanted Customer" who comes to the bar after 21:00.


Availability: Chapters 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

How to: Talk to Thomas in the Galaxy of Terror bar, and he will tell you about the predicament. Now wait for the next day (roughly 24 hours) and wait till 21:00 - 22:00 to find Jack the Raging Bull. Talk to him to finish the quest.

Periodic Riddle
Ushah has been given a "riddle" from Fiona that uses elemental symbols, but has no idea what the answer is. This doesn't seem related to the case...but why not help him find the answer?


Availability: Chapters 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 26.

How to: Talk to Ushah in the autopsy room to start the quest. Don't worry, you don't need to know anything about the periodic table to solve the riddle. It's quite simple actually. Just read the first line of letters vertically. It says: "Angel Kisses". Talk to Ushah again and pick the second dialogue option to complete the quest.

Snack for Willie
Willie has nabbed a [Bone] uncovered in the course the investigation. It could be important evidence. Get the [Bone] back from Willie's kennel in the back of Kaysen's car.


Availability: Chapters 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18.

How to: Okay, when I say "Starting sidequest #49" I mean you need to fulfill a requirement for the sidequest. On your map you will be able to see some bone icons. You can pick up these bones. There are seven of them all marked on the map. Pick them all up and then talk to Forrest to have the dog Willie steal your bones. Bandit! Now search the area you're in for Forrest's truck. The truck has a doghouse on it. Search it to find your precious bones and the gun and complete the quest.

Someone in the Forest
Someone is walking in Anna's forest in the early afternoon, when the weather is clear. Give this person the [Out of Focus Picture]. Let the twins know once you have found out who the "ghost" is.

How to: You need to start this quest by talking to Isaach. He is in Keith's house if it's raining but by the Tree of Anna when it's clear weather. Talk to him and it will initiate Sidequest #3, and he will give you a picture. Complete sidequest #3 and return to Isaach to complete the quest.

Legendary Tabatha
You'll never catch [Tabatha] with your current fishing rod. Borrow the legendary fishing rod from Jim and try again. [Tabatha] appears near the waterfall only on rainy days.


Availability: Chapters 6, 7, 8, 11, 13, 16 and 26.

How to: To initiate this quest, you need to wait till it rains and go to Jim's Cabin, where there will be a fishing spot that initiates the quest. Try to catch the fish in the blue box. You can't. You need the Rod of Legends! Talk to Jim inside his cabin alone. He will give you the Rod of Legends. Use it to catch that fish.

"Cope's Tunnel" is marked on a suspicious map purchased from Keith at the Milk Barn. Go to the marked location and clear the "Other World" challenge there.

How to: Go to the Milk Barn and buy "Map A" from Keith. Cope's Tunnel on the map will now be marked with an orange arrow. Head there and enter the other world. Go through the map (It's just regular enemies. It shouldn't be too tough), until you get to the final (and fifth) room. Here there will be no enemies and only the infinite 10mm Submachine Gun in the middle on a table. Pick it up and exit through the purple ring to complete the quest.

"The scene of a railway accident" is marked on a suspicious map purchased from Keith at the Milk Barn. Go to the marked location and clear the "Other World" challenge there.

How to: After the last sidequest, go buy "Map B" from Keith. This time you need to travel to and head to the railroad track south from Thomas' Apartment. This time you need to clear 8 rooms of enemies. If you use the Infinite 10mm Submachine gun you got from earlier it's quite easy. When you get to the ninth and last room, and there is the Infinite 12Ga Shotgun CGB on a table and a purple ring to exit.

"The GV Electrical Substation" is marked on a suspicious map purchased from Keith at the Milk Barn. Go to the marked location and clear the "Other World" challenge there.

How to: After the two last quests, return to Keith in the Milk Barn and buy "Map C". This time you need to head for the electrical station at Keith's House. Enter the other world again. This time, however, there are three repeat boss battles rather than enemies. Defeat them all (easy with the "Infinite" weapons). Head to the 4th and last room and pick up the Infinite RPG at the couch and exit the purple ring to complete this quest.

The Bond Between Man
Quietly return the [Legendary Guitar Grecotch] to Keith when he is working at the Milk Barn. This could be the start of a lasting friendship.

How to: Talk to Lilly when she is in the Milk Barn (around 9:30) to start the mini-game. For this game you need to push blocks around in a certain order.

First push the upper left block to the upper middle hole. Next push the middle block to lower left hole (push it left first THEN push it down). Lastly push the lower third block into the lower third hole, and you're done, and you have completed the sidequest.

Move the middle block up and to the left to get into the upper left hole. Now move the lower block up to the upper middle hole, and then the upper block to the lower middle hole.

How to: BlockPusher 3: Push Harder!

For this one we have a left, middle and right crate. Move the middle block one space to the right. Move the left block down one space. Move the right block up one space. Move the middle block back to its initial position by pushing it one space to the left. Push the right block down two spaces. Push the middle block up and to the left to the top left hole. Push the right block up to the top right hole, and push the left block easily to the last hole to complete the sidequest.

The Legendary Guitar
Use the [Key for Closet] obtained from Lilly for your hard work to open the closet in Keith's garage. He should be home in the afternoons on rainy days

Nick, in prison, has asked you to take a letter to Olivia for him. She's holed herself up at home, so take the [Letter from Nick] to her.

How to: Go to the SWERY bar when its open (21:00 - 00:00) and buy the Dart Gun from Richard. Now you need to beat his score of 2017. You need to use the left analog stick to aim, while , you can concentrate by holding down but that takes breath and you don't have infinite of that. If you're running out of stamina you can't concentrate. You need to focus on the inner ring of the "20" spot, which will net you 60 points. Sometime the spaces lights up, which means they give 5 times as many. If the space is of relative high number get the inner ring to put a x5 multiplier on an x3 multiplier. The very last shot is important and you need to have some breath left for it. If you hit the middle on the last dart you get a whooping 500 points which are required to win. You complete the sidequest when you win the the game. Remember to also get the 2nd and 3rd place too.
