[top]Introduction

Defiance is an MMOTPS (Mass Multiplayer Online Third Person Shooter) made by Trion Worlds, set in a post-apocalyptic world based on the up and coming Sci-fi show of the same name. You take control of a selfmade mostly silent protagonist who joins the allegiance to defeat hellbugs, mutants, raiders, 99'ers, Scrappers and Dark Matter Soldiers.

The game offers a variety of things to do. You can explore the wasteland completing main and sidequests, playing co-op maps, go to war against other players, annihilate giant arks, defeat challenges, turn in contracts, reach goals and interact with other players to trade, group up with or make clans.

Trailer for the game:

[top]Tips and Strategies

Most things are described at the respective part of the guides, so here is about the gunfights themselves:
  • Don't run'n'gun. Taking cover pays out.
  • Remember to switch weapons to be able to level them up.
  • While the cloak and shotgun combo seems good for PvP, they have become a bit of a taboo in the online community.
  • Figure out your playstyle. Find the weapon that suits you.
  • Play with friends and strangers. It's not only easier but much more fun.
  • Grenades are helpful... use them!
The most important thing is to not get bored. So don't do the same things over and over or else you'll hit a burnout part pretty quickly.

[top]A Short Summary of What You Can Do

Well... Welcome to the world of Defiance! So what to do? After the tutorial you're kinda left on a big plain with many other players having no oversight of what to do, so here is a quick recap.

Main Mission:
Progress through the story.

Side missions and challenges:
These are small parts of the game. Side missions are just shorter main missions and challenges has certain levels to go for.

Arkfalls:
Join a good 20-100 other players to defeat the evil hellbugs, mutants, raiders, 99'ers or scrappers. These battles are exhausting but pretty cool.

Contracts:
Small goals you need to reach periods of either a day or a week. Opens at 250 EGO rating.

Pursuits:
Longer term goals.

Competitive maps:

Capture and hold, team deathmatch and shadow war are the categories for competitive maps.

Co-op maps:
Dungeons that needs to be completed by 2-4 people.

Holy Shtako!
Complete the tutorial

The tutorial is the very first thing you do. You need to get equipped, and get yourself a power and then leave. That's it.

[top]
Skruggin' Ark Core
Complete Act 1

This for completing all main missions in Mount Tam. The last mission is: "Into the Depths".

[top]
Wrong Hands
Complete Act 2

This for completing all main missions in Madera. The last mission is: "Breaking into San Queinton".

[top]

Complete Act 4

This for completing all main missions in the Sausalito. The last mission is: "Into the Heart of Darkness".

[top]
Who...Are You?
Complete Act 5

This for completing all main missions in the San Francisco and thereby completing the game. The last mission is: "Defiance".

[top]
Overdosing
Complete the Liberate the Lost co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
This Co-op mission is available at the get go. For this you need to get to the end of the level and defeat a big Piercer. The level is easy... really easy. He will regenerate three times before being able to take him down, but he is just mostly using his gatling gun.

[top]
Broom Closet
Complete the Soleptor Excavation co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
NOTE: No one knows when these unlock, but if you complete Act 3 and get an EGO rating of 400 you should be good.
This co-op mission is long and a bit difficult. It's filled with Raiders and has quite a few Tankers. The last boss is just a Hulker, but with a good chunk of enemies. Before it dies off, it will charge at you continously, which is quite frustrating.

[top]
Save Your Ganchis
Complete the Explosions 101 co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
NOTE: No one knows when these unlock, but if you complete Act 3 and get an EGO rating of 400 you should be good.
Another map with Raiders. This one is long, but easy, just look for the turrets. There are two boss battles; a hulker which is easy, and Desuko, in which you need to shoot the turrets on the wall, then damage him. Do this three times, and he will be forever attached. This makes the fight easier.

[top]
Call Me Psycho
Complete the Island of Lost Soldiers co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
NOTE: No one knows when these unlock, but if you complete Act 3 and get an EGO rating of 400 you should be good.
This map has a lot of hellbugs and a few 99'ers. It's quite short and the ending boss is not too bad. It's a Matron, which you may have fought off in an Arkfall, basically just fire away, and aim for the head.

[top]
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Complete the Motherlode co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
NOTE: No one knows when these unlock, but if you complete Act 3 and get an EGO rating of 400 you should be good.
Another 99'er and Hellbug matchup. This one is just plain tedious, and can be frustrating at times. The boss is one of the harder ones. 99'ers will spawn while trying to get this one. Aim for the knees is probably the best hint I can give.

[top]
Not Bad at All
Complete the Commandeer Cronkhite co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
NOTE: No one knows when these unlock, but if you complete Act 3 and get an EGO rating of 400 you should be good.
A Dark Matter level. This is probably the hardest one, since the enemies are pretty tough. The boss is of average difficulty. Kill the enemies first then focus getting his shield down. His shield is big but his health is low, so don't take too long between hurting him.

[top]
Super Excited
Complete the Scrapworks Salvage co-op map

Co-op mission you get by pressing then "Matchmaking" then "co-op" then the desired co-op map. It's for four people and they're usually pretty easy. It's a level and a boss, basically.
NOTE: No one knows when these unlock, but if you complete Act 3 and get an EGO rating of 400 you should be good.
This one does not have a boss, but rather an "Arena sequence". The level is filled with Dark Matter and Scrappers, and in the end you need to defend yourself against a whole lot of them. There is luckily a lot of cover.

I find it easiest to get the vehicle and exploration ones, since they're not skill-based at all, just a sense of direction is needed for this. Exploration alone has almost 20, so get busy, and drive around the world to get these exploration pursuits.

[top]
Executive Wash Room
Complete a daily contract for Von Bach Industries

Contracts unlock at an EGO rating of 250. They can be seen in the "Goals" sub-menu. Von Bach mostly just wants you to run errands. Kill a certain amount of enemies in an area to retrieve things for him. These are generally pretty easy. Sometimes it's hard to figure out where the enemies are exactly. You can see the region in the upper left corner in the map, but you sometimes needs specific locations. For that just drive around until you find it. You can find the contracts in the goals subsection and then press to get to them.

[top]
Private Booth

You can find the contracts in the goals subsection and then press to get to them.

[top]
Secure Channel
Complete a daily contract for Echelon

Contracts unlock at an EGO rating of 250. These, however, works a little differently than the others. These are getting by winning or getting special kills in PvP matches. These are easily grindable, but they are still the hardest contracts to win. You can find the contracts in the goals subsection and then press to get to them.

[top]
Seven Days a Week
Complete 4 weekly contracts

Contrats unlock at an EGO rating of 250. All contractsgivers have weekly contracts too. You have a week to do them, but they require a bit more effort and grinding to succeed them. Do four (can be done in one week) and the trophy will be yours. You can find the contracts in the goals subsection and then press to get to them.

[top]
Key to Paradise
Increase reputation with Von Bach Industries, Soleptor Enterprises, Top Notch Toolworks and Echelon

To increase reputation you need to do contracts for the certain parties. You can see in the contracts menu how far you are to level up the reputation. You need to level up at least once for every party to get this trophy.

Don't sell any of your reputation. It's a bad idea, since it decrease the reputation.

[top]
Widely Regarded
Get max reputation with Von Bach Industries, Soleptor Enterprises, Top Notch Toolworks and Echelon

To increase reputation you need to do contracts for the certain parties. Your status can be seen in the contracts screen, everytime that white meter fills, you are a closer to level up in reputation. You need to fully fill up your reputation to do this. Weekly contracts gives you 50 reputation points while daily give you 10 points. To be fully trusted you need to get 1000 reputation points for each for the 4 entities. The rankings go like this:

0 - 99 Unknown
100 - 299 Familiar
300 - 599 Reliable
600 - 1000 Trusted

This will take you a few weeks at least. Remember that weekly contracts updates at monday.

Don't sell any of your reputation. It's a bad idea, since it decrease the reputation.

[top]
Arkhunting
Complete your first minor arkfall

Arkfalls are marked with red markers with red circles around it on the map. So if it is red, it's mostly likely an arkfall. There are two arkfalls. The minor arkfall has a small red circle around it, while major arkfalls have multiple markers and a big red circle. Minor arkfalls either consist of defeating three waves of enemies or to destroy the arkfall. Minor arkfalls usually have 3-15 other players playing them. You do not have to deal the killing blow just to get to the end. Hell, you can even join the last 10 seconds of the match and still be a part of it.

[top]
Arkhunting Party
Complete your first major arkfall in the Bay Area

See: "Arkhunting Safari ".

[top]
Arkhunting Safari
Complete 10 major arkfalls in the Bay Area

Arkfalls are marked with red markers with red circles around it on the map. So if it is red, it's mostly likely an arkfall. There are two arkfalls. The minor arkfall has a small red circle around it, while major arkfalls have multiple markers and a big red circle.
Major arkfalls consists of 3-5 minor arkfalls where you either have to defeat three waves of enemies or destroy the arkfall itself. After all minor arkfalls have been destroyed the major arkfall begins, where you need to defeat a boss. You need to lure it out by either defeating the Monarchs or killing the weakspot under the "arms" of the big arkfall in the middle. There is usually 5-30 people for each of the small of the arkfalls, and over 100 people for the big finalé. You do not have to deal the killing blow just to get to the end. Hell, you can even join the last 10 seconds of the match and still be a part of it.

[top]
Freight Magnate
Win 10 matches in Freight Yard

To get to the match press and then choose "Matchmaking" "Competitive Maps" "Freight Yard"

This is the biggest "Competitive Map". You need a total of 24 players to play. This is a capture and hold where you need to have a capture point as long as possible. Be on the winning team 10 times in total. Doesn't matter if you did badly, just aslong as your team did well. See the "PvP Maps" section for more information.

[top]
Stargazer
Win 10 matches in Observatory

To get to the match press and then choose "Matchmaking" "Competitive Maps" "Observatory"

For this one you need a total of 16 players. It's a deathmatch game, and the winner is the team that gets 40 kills first. Be on the winning team 10 times in total. Doesn't matter if you did badly, just aslong as your team did well. See the "PvP Maps" section for more information.

[top]
Wharfie
Win 10 matches in Waterfront

To get to the match press and then choose "Matchmaking" "Competitive Maps" "Waterfront"

These are the quickest games. It only needs 12 players to start and it's a deathmatch game, which only goes to 25. Be on the winning team 10 times in total. Doesn't matter if you did badly, just aslong as your team did well. See the "PvP Maps" section for more information.

[top]
Bit of an EGO
Earn your first perk

To earn a perk you need to unlock an EGO unlock, which is gotten by leveling up your EGO strength. You level up your EGO strength by pretty much doing anything. Go to the Skill Tree sections of the main menu and press at any unlocked perk to get this trophy.

[top]
Abundance of EGO
Earn 50 perks

Perks are gotten by getting EGO units, which are gotten by leveling up, and you can level up by doing pretty much anything. You need to have at least one upgrade in 50 different perks, meaning you need at least 50 perks to get this trophy. So it's basically just about upgrading enough.

[top]
Stroking Your EGO
Completely upgrade a perk

To earn a perk you need to unlock an EGO unlock, which is gotten by leveling up your EGO strength. You level up your EGO strength by pretty much doing anything. Now you need to fill one up. You'll have to unlock all three upgrades in one perk to get this. This will most likely (depending on the perk) require you to have an EGO rating of 150-200.

[top]
EGO Maniac
Completely upgrade 25 perks

Perks are gotten by getting EGO units, which are gotten by leveling up, and you can level up by doing pretty much anything. To get this, you need at least 76 units to complete all of them. You need to have all three spaces of 25 different tiles filled completely up, and this can take a while. If you messed up and wants to reassign, press while in the menu. You'll have to pay some money (your EGO rank * 10) to be able to.

[top]
Powerful EGO
Completely upgrade an EGO Power

In the tutorial you choose on of the four powers. To upgrade any power you need to have an EGO rating of at least 400 hundred and have 4 units to spare. For more info on the powers check the: "Classes and EGO powers" section of the guide.

[top]
EGOtistical
Reach EGO Rating 500

See "EGOcentric Arkhunter " for full information.

[top]
EGOcentric Arkhunter
Reach EGO Rating 2500

EGO Rating is gotten by two things: leveling up and completing pursuits. EGO rating unlocks a lot of stuff for you and can be used as a multiplier for finding rare items and stuff. Leveling up can be done by doing anything and pursuits can be done, by following their instructions. You need to reach 2500 EGO, and this is most likely one if not the last trophy before platinum.

[top]
Wait for It...
Equip your first legendary weapon

The weapons in the game is sorted in a ranking system. There are a variety of weapons and the better in the ranking system it is, the more mods can be added onto the weapons. They use colour codes to check rariety. It goes like this:

White < Green < Blue < Purple < Orange

This means to get this trophy you need to get a hold of an Orange-marked weapon. The best way to get this is through Tier Boxes which is at the most shopplaces. Buying Tier Box 3 or 4 is the best chance to get one. The higher EGO ranking you have the bigger chance you have to get a legendary weapon. To open Tier Boxes you need to have Scrap (general currency) and resources which can be easily acquired with co-op maps or side missions.

[top]
Shoot to Skill
Max out one weapon skill

A weapons skill increases by just basically using it. Although this will take some time, at level 400 you will at the very best have a level 7 out of the 20 you need to get. Now the problem is, that you need to be switching the weapons constantly since there is a limitation on how much you can need a weapon. So if you've decided to upgrade the assault rifle you will need to have to have multiple assault rifles. If you look at the HUD, right under the weapon display (where you see what weapon you have, and you're ammo amount), under it is a white line. If that fills up you've exhausted all leveling of that weapon, and you need to switch to continue.

There are no speedy way to do this, unless you have real life money to spend. You can go to the Defiance store and upgrade the weapon XP use.
You can see how far away from the trophy you are by going to the stats tab in the character subsection of the pause menu, and then scroll down.

[top]
Calculated Killer
Kill 10,000 enemies

Ten thousand is a lot of enemies, but you will get this way before you get an EGO ranking of 2500. Challenges are a good way to do this, but grinding for this would be unwise. If you wanna check your progress you can check it by going to your pursuits and go to the section called: "Combat" and then see "Living to Kill III".

[top]
A Friend in Need
Revive another player outside the tutorial

If you see another player lying on the ground crawling while a blue exclamation point is floating above his/her head, that means that the certain person is down. Walk up to him/her and press and hold to revive the said person. There are often people dying at arkfalls or co-op maps, since they are very online heavy.

[top]
Chasing Shadows
Capture 50 points in Shadow War

Shadow war is laid out in a way where you capture certain points at different places. You need to capture these points by around the point. A blue meter around the circle indicating the capture point (A, B, C, D, E or F), the more blue it becomes the closer it is to be captured. You need to be in area when the meter is filled, or else it won't count, but you don't need to be there for a certain stretch of time. If you're good/lucky you can get 7-8 points per game.

[top]
Vehicular Manslaughter
Kill 25 players by running them over

This is only possible on the map Freightyard and Shadow War. I prefer Shadow War since it's easier to sneak up to them, and since you can call a vehicle everytime you want one, instead of having to find one. There is no way to see your progress, but if you try to get kills with it, you can get this trophy in 4-5 shadow wars.

[top]
Brain Surgeon
Kill 50 players with headshots

Probably the hardest of the PvP-related trophies. When you get a headshot, a marker with a bullet through a skull pops up instead of the regular kill icon. You need 50 of these. The easiest way I found is using the cloak ability to sneak up and then either use a sniper rifle or an assault rifle. There is no counter for this in the game, so you'll just have to get it when you get it. This method is easiest in shadow wars.
For more info about PvP check the section: "PvP Maps" at the bottom of the guide.

[top]
Upper Echelon
Kill 100 players

You can not kill other players while being in the overworld, so this has to be done on competitive maps and Shadow wars. If you're used to online multiplayer games, 100 kills should come fairly quickly. To check your progress go to the pursuit menu and
For more info about PvP check the section: "PvP Maps" at the bottom of the guide.

[top]
Yeeeeeeehaaaaawww!
Jump a total of 5 kilometers with vehicles

There are as of yet three different kind of vehicles in Defiance: Rollers, Runners and Cerebrus'. Rollers are regular car types, runners are ATV's and Cerebrus are large trucks. Obviously the best vehicle for this are the Runners, there is a variety of places where good jumps are possible, and chances are that you can knock out the most of this, while just playing the game regularly.

You'll unlock your first roller at the second mission in the game.

[top]
Good Cardio
Swim a total of 1 kilometer

This will only take 10 minutes of grinding, and it can be knocked out pretty early on. In the beginning of act one, you will come to a mission where you have to defuse bombs on some pillars of a bridge. Here there is water you can swim in without getting respawned back (unlike the sea at the coasts). Swim in circles for around 10 minutes to swim a kilometer.

[top]
Monolithic Landmark
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate bridge is the big bridge that connects the big island (San Francisco) and the Beach Area. If you go there you will see this huge robot killing you in one shot. You'll have to complete act 4 before being able to cross the bridge.

[top]Classes and EGO Powers

There are four classes and four EGO Powers. Classes don't really do anything except giving you different starting weapons, which you can discard 10 minutes in the game. They are:

Veteran
Outlaw
Survivalist
Technician

EGO Powers on the other hand can be useful, but they can be discarded later on as well. They provide as especially charge-able power to your arsenal. They are:

Blur:
Makes you quick and hard to hit, plus your melee attacks do loads more damage.

Decoy:
Sends off a hologram version of yourself, that makes enemies target that rather than you.

Cloak:
Makes you invisible to enemies for a little while.

Overcharge:
For a period of time you do 10% more damage.

[top]PvP Maps

Freight Yard:
A pretty big level with vehicles too. It's rather open making it a good place for snipers and assault rifles. Remember to capture and hold the points too.

Observatory:
Semi-big, semi open location. The houses is best for use of close combat, so I don't recommend going into those if you don't have a short ranged weapon. The outside is better for long-ranged weapons.

Waterfront:
Semi-big, narrow location. There are a lot of corners, making this the ideal map for shotgunners and the like. I've seen people using the water as reliable way to get away. If you insist on sniping use the upper parts of the crane.

Shadow Wars:
These vary a little depending on which region you are in when pressing "Matchmaking", but they are all big open fields with small sections with houses, where the capture points is. This is a good place for a sniper. Short-ranged weapons are best for getting up front to capture and hold the points.

[top]Minigames

There are three kinds of challenges. These are marked with an orange-yellow sign, with a symbol on it varying from challeng-type to challenge-type.

Race (Clock Interface Symbol)
You need to drive a vessel through some hoops. There is not really a lot to talk about here. Remember to boost frequently.

Rampage (Fire Symbol)

You get a certain weapon, which you need to defend yourself against hordes of enemies with. There is usually some cover. Use that, but the clock is ticking so don't be too hesitant.

Hotshot (Scope Target Symbol)
Here you get a certain weapon which you need to defend against hordes of enemies with. The difference between this and Rampage is you do have a very limited amount of ammo and you can refill a bit of that ammo by defeating enemies. This requires you to aim for the head an be very conservative with your ammo.
