[top]Tips & Strategies

First and foremost play the tutorial.
Even if you're an old school Galaga pro, play the tutorial. This game plays almost nothing like the original and it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with how the ships move, the twin stick shooting mechanics, and the different enemy types.

Controls:
Left Control Stick- Move the ship
Right Control Stick- Aim and fire
& - Switch firing modes between unified single shot and multi-directional firing.
- Fire, this is claimed to be rapid fire but it does not change the firing rate by any significance. However this is helpful if you are a player who tends to return the control stick to a neutral position when changing direction. In this case holding will continue a stead stream of fire as you reposition.

Play all Nine Areas on Hard:
The only thing this effects is the number of lives you will begin each area with. If you play on any other difficulty you will have to repeat these areas.

General Enemy types:
Swarm ships- these are the minion ships that make up the bulk of the Galaga fleet. For the most part they do not shoot, except the slightly bigger ones that usually lead the line. Easy to dispatch but can overwhelm.

Squad Leader- (See trophy for Area 8 for picture) Squad Leaders are usually at the tail end of a squad of Swarm ships. Destroy the Squad Leader and the whole Squad is destroyed.

Mid Boss- (See the trophy for Race Against Time for picture) Mid Bosses appear along with Squad leaders in bigger swarms, though they can appear without Squad leaders. Destroying a Mid Boss will eliminate the entire on screen swarm, note that if there is more than one Mid Boss all Mid Bosses must be destroyed to eliminate the swarm.

Galaga Bombs:
Galaga Bombs look very similar to the Squad Leaders except that they have additional little yellow circles at opposite ends of itself. These yellow dots tell you the direction of the bombs blast when shot, either vertically of horizontally. When a Galaga Bomb is shot anything caught in the blast is destroyed. If a Mid Boss is caught in that blast the game will briefly slow down and a red blast field will appear to show the player the Mid Boss is being destroyed.

Understand Bullet Time and How Your Ship is Destroyed:
Just being hit will not cause your ship to blow up and cost you a life. Rather something must make contact with the core of your ship. If an enemy or bullet hits your satellites or the edge of your ship the game will enter a form of bullet time. The enemies and bullets will slow down giving you a chance to react and avoid death. Note that the round timer is NOT effected by bullet time.
You can also use this bullet time to your advantage as by moving very slowly out of danger you keep the bullet time active, this can be helpful is lining up better shots on bigger enemies or draining time off the clock in a particularly difficult Area.

Watch the Lightshow:
Just before each wave appears streaks of light will drat across the screen mapping out the initial route the enemy ships will take. This is incredibly helpful in setting up how you will defend as the upcoming wave as you will begin to recognize patterns in the flight paths and can avoid swarms spawning on top of you. Note: some waves stick to the path without fail and other will use it to get on screen then detour to chase you.

One last thing, NEVER stop shooting.

[top]Cheats, Glitches, & Exploits

Exploiting the Galaga:
At the beginning of every Level 5 and during Championship Mode you will have access to a special Galaga formation. Like all areas you will see speed lines before the ships appear to show where the flight patterns are going, during this time fly forward (constantly shooting) before the ships appear. When the ships appear you will be right at the middle of the formation and able to take over the fleet faster, this will save you precious seconds in the Time Trials.

[top]Roadmap

Play the Tutorial FIRST!
-If you are dead set to not waste time you can do the Tutorial in the Time Trial area, as you will have to anyway to clear Time Trials later and it is fairly easy. It's hidden at the bottom.

If you struggle with the Tutorial, play Championship next.
-The reason for this is you can do Championship on any difficulty so if you're having trouble you can set it to easy and use this time to get a solid feel for the game. This mode will also introduce you to many of the Galaga formation patterns you will see repeated in other Areas.

If you feel comfortable after the Tutorial, play Areas 1-9 on Hard next.
-Just do it on Hard, don't make yourself do it twice. If you love it (which you probably will) go back and play it again for fun, but for trophies just do it on Hard.

Do whichever previous option you didn't do before.
-If you played Championship, now go do the Areas. If you did the Areas go do Championship.

Do the Time Trials.
-Every wave of every Area and nothing you can skip. You can do them in any order and once they're all done so is your 100%

Area 1 Clear
Cleared Area 1!

General notes for all Area clears:

First, you do NOT have to defeat every wave when trying to clear the individual areas, you only need to stay alive for the duration of the timer.

Second, you will have to do all 5 levels in one run with one set of lives. You can earn one extra live every 250,000 points, but if you run out you'll have to start over. So try to limit sacrifices if trying to use them to burn the clock.

Third, if the area you're trying is going too fast or you need time to think skim an enemy ship to enter bullet time. Be very careful so you don't crash, but move out slowly to keep it active. This will give you more precious time to react and burn the clock.

Fourth, Level 5 is an endless collection of Waves. If you're looking to bump up your score this is great place to do it, however if you're having trouble the Waves get harder as you move forward so it might be a good idea slow down here and burn the clock.

Finally, if you have internet access and are having trouble go to the Scoreboard. Replays are available of the top scores, find somebody with a good technique....and steal it .

Grand Champion
Cleared Championship!

You can play Championship on any difficulty level.

Championship will take you through the hardest and most difficult Waves (Boss Waves) from all other levels, however as an advantage you will be given a Galaga formation on the first Wave of Level 1 and will keep it through the end.

For individual Wave help see the Time Trials listings below.

Race Against Time
Completed all Time Attacks!

Below are entries for each level of the Time Trials, the spoilers contain tactics for going wave by wave through the indicated level.

Quick Notes:
-These are basic survival outlines, this is designed to help you beat these Areas without too much effort, but it is not designed to give you record times or High Scores. You gotta get those on your own.

-Each Area has 5 Levels and in those Levels there are different numbers of Waves. If within one Area I refer to something as Level 2 Wave 4 that would mean in this Area reference Level 2 Wave 4 for similar tactics. If it said Area 2 Level 2 Wave 4 it would then be specifying a different Area in which to find the Level and Wave to reference.

-Level 5 of every Area is a collection of previous Waves and as such only refers you back to those Waves for help.

True Completionist
Cleared all areas on hard difficulty!

This trophy refers only to the individual Areas of 1-9 and not to Championship or Time Trials (there is no difficulty setting for Time Trials).

Be sure to set the difficulty to Hard before the start of EACH area, this is not set it once and it carries over you must set it for EACH area.

Difficulty only effects the number of reserve ships you start with:

Hard: 3 in reserve
Normal: 4 in reserve
Easy: 5 in reserve

In any difficulty you will earn an extra ship every 250,000 points.

For individual Area and Level notes see the Race Against Time.
