Game Overview:
Developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital Hotline Miami was first released for the PC and is now available on Playstation3 and PsVita for $9.99 USD / $13.75 AUD / £7.29 / Ä8.99 featuring cross-save and cross-buy with a single trophy list and platinum.

Hotline Miami itself is a fast paced twitch 2D twin stick game with puzzle elements to it, just figuring out how to progress through each level can be a puzzle in itself.
The game features a killer soundtrack to go along with the (literally) killer game play as you delve into Miami in 1989, playing as the unknown character dubbed simply "Jacket" by some fans, you are thrown into a world of violence and mayhem, tasked via messages left on your answering machine to kill your way through Miami.
Your first task ends with the player vomiting on the ground in disgust and sickness at the acts he has performed and as the game progresses he becomes desensitized to everything that occurs, you begin questioning whether or not the events are even happening.

Hotline Miami offers a fast paced, brutal and challenging game play, you must adapt quickly to situations and enemies and plan your way through levels on the fly or through trial and error until you complete the chapter in one fell swoop with everything going (hopefully) perfectly.
There is a somewhat punishing system of death resetting you back to the start of the floor you were on but this adds to the challenge of it all, one wrong move can have you starting back at the beginning of the floor.

This kind of game play along with a great soundtrack that keeps you alert throughout combine to provide an addictive and fast past experience for the player who doesn't shy away from a challenge.

[top]Tips and Strategies

  • Tony the Tiger mask is a very useful tool for clearing chapters, it allows you to simply punch people and dogs to death instead of requiring a melee weapon or noisy gunfire that will bring all the bad guys to you.
  • The technique of peeking in and out of cover for a split second is very useful throughout the game, lure enemies towards you to take out with a melee weapon or punch to knock them out and finish off
  • Bonesickle's handy Guide to Using All Weapons & All Ground Kills in Hotline Miami for weapons to be used in Hotline Miami, and how to get the ground executions for Always on Top. and melee weapon kills etc.
  • Glass panels are your best friend and your enemy, you can shoot enemies through it, they can see you and come charging into the room you are in or worse kill you without you even seeing them through it, make sure you are aware of its position and act accordingly.
  • Make use of the various masks if Tony the tiger's mask isn't a good fit for you make sure you check the Zoo Keeper trophy for information on where to get, and what all of the various masks in the game can do for you.

  • Check Aced It for tips with getting A+ on all chapters.

If you are playing on vita try to play more stealthily than on Ps3, it is slightly harder to react to enemies than on Ps3.
I recently got my vita and was surprised at how well it plays on the system, but some frustrating moments in the game may cause damage to your more expensive bit of hardware.

    Controls:

    Movement: left thumb stick.

    Aiming: Right thumb stick.

Throw equipped item: This is also useful for getting rid of a gun if its out of ammo quicker than hitting
Interact: this is pretty much what you do to skip cutscenes/text (I wouldn't suggest skipping the text on your first playthrough) and interact with various things throughout Hotline Miami.

Lock on: R2 this is useful to lock on a single target to throw something at them and knock out, can sometimes get you in trouble when you lock onto an enemy and another target rushes you, tap again to unlock, or scroll through targets by moving your aim to the next target.
If playing on the PsVita, simple touch onto the target you wish to lock on to.
Your cross-hairs will turn from white to red and hover over the indicated target.

Drop current weapon: slower than throwing but can be useful if you want to leave a particular piece of equipment in a specific location for easier access, or leaving it in cover.

"Look": This is a very useful feature as it allows you to see more of the building without moving, the Playstation version seems to have a lower resolution than PC version generally runs in and as such you cannot see quite as much of the screen, hold L2 and use the thumb stick to look further ahead to scout out areas and see if there are targets ahead, and to lock onto enemies that are off-screen.

The look function on the Vita is a bit more tricky to use would of been nice if it was rear touch screen or :triangle: or something instead, but use the front screen to pan your view around, and this is the awkward part since looking is usually utilised to lock on distance targets, tap the target while panning, and thumb stick would of been much more natural.

[top]Roadmap

Play through the game and get used to the controls and set-up of playing, the game may take some getting used to at first but stick with it.
While playing through the game attempt to get all of the masks and puzzle pieces that you can for Zoo Keeper and Eye For Details + The Boss trophies.
After you have finished your first play through you should have earned The End? and That's It? and various other trophies for performing certain kills such as Combo Beginner and Combo Intermediate.
Next you can do another play through finishing up any trophies you may have missed, or use chapter select to get any pieces of the puzzle you may have missed for Eye For Details and The Boss trophies.

You should then use chapter select to earn any trophies for This is It by collecting all the puzzle pieces if you missed it the first time, this will unlock the Nigel mask for the Zoo Keeper trophy.
You can then work on performing tasks with a certain mask or weapons such as Cat Fight and Sewer Alligator and Bat-Man also clean up any other miscellaneous trophies you may have missed in your play troughs such as the weapon use and executions, then work on getting A+ ratings in every chapter via chapter select for Aced It finish up with the Dog Lover & Let in Some Air trophies if you did not earn them through natural progression.

Combo Beginner
Perform a 4x combo

This is the easiest combo kill trophy, it should be unlocked fairly quickly once you get used to how the game mechanics work, perform a combo kill of at least four enemies in quick succession to earn this trophy.
You can try using masks such as, Zack the frog (longer combo window) and Jake the snake for thrown weapon kills to aid in boosting your combos.
To an extent Don Juan (Horse) for instant door swing kills and Brandon the Panther mask to move more quickly to your next kill.
See Combo King for more extensive tips on getting combo kills.

You can use masks such as, Zack the frog (longer combo window) and Jake the snake for thrown weapon kills to aid in boosting your combos.
To an extent Don Juan (Horse) for instant door swing kills and Brandon the Panther mask to move more quickly to your next kill.

Combo Master
Perform a 10x combo

This is where combo kills are significantly more difficult to perform, you must attain a combo of ten enemy kills in quick succession to earn this trophy.
You can use masks such as, Zack the frog (longer combo window) and Jake the snake for thrown weapon kills to aid in boosting your combos.
To an extent Don Juan (Horse) for instant door swing kills and Brandon the Panther mask to move more quickly to your next kill.
See Combo King for more extensive tips on getting combo kills.

[top]
Combo King
Perform a 12x combo

This is the grandmaster of combo kills in Hotline Miami to earn Combo King you must kill Twelve enemies in quick succession, this is much more of an ask than the earlier combo kill requirements and as such is difficult to maintain your kills.
You can use masks such as, Zack the frog (longer combo window) and Jake the snake for thrown weapon kills to aid in boosting your combos.
To an extent Don Juan (Horse) for instant door swing kills and Brandon the Panther mask to move more quickly to your next kill.

The Tony the Tiger Mask can also be used for great combos as evidenced by this video by Bonesickle in which he outlines a method to attain a 12 times combo on chapter thirteen, "Assault."

Playing Pool
Hit an enemy with a weapon bounced against a wall

To pick up or drop a weapon hit you can then throw an equipped weapon by pressing , simply aim your held weapon towards a wall near to an enemy try to line it up so it will bounce back towards the enemy and take them down.
This should come fairly easily through natural progression in the game.

[top]
Nigel Lowrie
Use a human shield

The Nigel Lowrie trophy is earned by using a human shield while playing Hotline Miami.
To use someone as a human shield during the game you must first knock an enemy down by any means, then perform an execution as normal, (hit ) the difference here is you must be holding a particular weapons to take a human shield instead of simply executing the target.
Weapons that you can use for performing this include:
  • Double barreled shotgun (which is evident by only having 2 ammo indicated in the bottom left of screen)
  • The Silenced pistol
  • The Magnum pistol
  • MP5

  • Scorpion

(Seems to be most of the one handed firearms in the game that you can do this with.)

[top]
Domino Effect
Throw a weapon at an enemy so that his weapon hits another

Earning Domino Effect is a matter of throwing a equipped weapon at an enemy that is standing nearby another and knocking his held weapon out of his hand which then knocks out the other target.
To pick up or drop a weapon hit you can then throw any equipped weapon by pressing , simply aim your held weapon at the target (you can lock onto specific targets by hitting Ps3) or Touch to lock-on (PsVita) your cross hair will turn red and hover upon the targets head.
You then time your throw to coincide with another enemy standing behind your target and hopefully his weapon will take out the other enemy also.

At first it may sound somewhat tedious to achieve but this was my first trophy I unlocked along with Playing Pool and should come easily through natural progression.

[top]
Aced It
Get an A+ on any chapter

Earning an A+ rating, which is displayed at the end of each chapter to grade your performance can be somewhat difficult to attain.
Your grade is based upon many factors judged by the game depending upon how you play through each section of a chapter.

Your rank criteria as indicated by the in game system includes:
  • Killings

  • Boldness

  • Combos

  • Time Bonus

  • Flexibility

  • Mobility

Your grade improved by completing the chapter quickly, while using a variety of weapons and methods to kill enemies throughout the chapter, chaining kills together earns extra points for Combos mobility is earned for not staying still although learning the layout of the chapter before hand is probably your best bet as you know what to expect.
Executions with specific weapons such as the knife, pool cue and briefcase for example earn more points than simply executing by fist and tie in to the flexibility points bonuses.
To maximize points chaining a succession of kills together while varying your methods like throwing your weapon at someone picking up their weapon meleeing another enemy, then executing the previous enemy all the while keeping on the move are just some of the ways to improve your grade.

Unlock all weapons

There are a variety of weapons throughout Hotline Miami, ranging from Briefcases to Katanas, Knives to Shotguns however for this trophy you only have to unlock the list of weapons, these are unlocked via score earned in chapters, some of these weapons will not occur during the game until you have unlocked them through score others will appear in the hands of enemies but you will need to complete this to have a chance of getting the Knife For Pros, Guns for Show Pitcher trophies.

The Knife for Pros trophy is awarded to the player for using every melee weapon in Hotline Miami.
These weapons include some unlockable weapons and some that are found throughout the chapters in general.

Like with all the other trophies for performing particular tasks such as collecting puzzle pieces and masks in chapters, your progress will not save if you die after performing the action, as such finishing off the current chapter or floor you are on is always the best option.

Chapter Five,"Full House" is a good place to spawn weapons (stay outside the building and walk to the left and right to check weapon spawns) finish off any of the spawned weapons you may need for Knife for Pros,
Always on Top and Pitcher

The melee weapons you need to have used are as follows:
  • Lead Pipe: the lead pipe is a fairly common melee weapon in Hotline Miami used by various bad guys throughout the chapters, its appearance is that of a grey stick.. basically exactly what it is.
  • A Pool Cue: The pool cue can be found in a fair few of the chapters of Hotline Miami a guaranteed spawn of the pool cue is in
chapter three, "Decadence" the pool cue is located on the second floor of the building in the chapter.
There will be a pool table just to the left of where you walk upstairs pick this up and get a regular kill and execution with it if also going for the Always on Top trophy.
The pool cue can also be broken once used, this counts as a separate weapon for all related trophies, such as Always on Top executions, make sure you use this and get a kill and execution with the broken version of the cue as well.
  • Golf Club: The golf club is a melee weapon that is relatively common during the game, it can be found to be used by many enemies in the game, you must use it as part of the conflict at the end of chapter Seven, Neighbours to defeat the boss section, therefore it is unmissable.
The Golf Clubs appearance is similar to that of the lead pipe, yet slightly longer and is L shaped at the end.
  • Crowbar: The crowbar is found at the beginning of chapter five, "Full House"it will be the first weapon you pick up if you start the chapter unarmed.
  • Baseball Bat: The baseball bat is a common melee weapon found throughout Hotline Miami, it can be found on bad guys throughout the game the bat should be fairly straightforward to locate and use for this trophy.
  • Knife: The knife can be found quite often in Hotline Miami, it is used by various bad guys throughout the game the knife should be fairly simple to locate and use to progress in finishing this trophy.
  • Frying Pan: The frying pan can be found during Chapter 5, "Full House" it is located on the second floor of the building in the chapter, on the kitchen top, it's appearance is somewhat similar to the pot, it is however black and holds no water making it slightly more difficult to spot.
  • Sledgehammer: The Sledgehammer is an unlockable weapon through earning score for completing chapters in Hotline Miami, once you have unlocked the Sledgehammer through accumulating enough points you will find it appearing in various chapters of the game as you play through, simply pick it up and get a kill to save progress towards this trophy.
  • A Pot: There are two versions of the pot in the game, you need to have used both to unlock the trophy one contains water the other is empty.
The pot with water can be found during chapter two, "Overdose" the pot is located on the second floor of the building on the far left hand side of the rooms on a stove, simply pick it up and use this weapon and finish the chapter.
Remember to use both versions of the pot to ensure you unlock this trophy.
  • Katana: The katana is an unlockable weapon by achieving score in chapters towards your unlocks, it is one of the earliest unlocks however and should then begin turning up in your chapter playthroughs relatively frequently you must use this melee weapon to earn the trophy.
  • Police Baton/Baton: You will find baton on police in Hotline Miami a guaranteed place to find one to use is in chapter 13 "Assault" when you are in the police station on the first floor.
  • Machete: The Machete is a relatively common melee weapon found in Hotline Miami, it is commonly used by various bad guys throughout the chapters, remember to use it and then get an execution also to complete.
  • Fireaxe:The fireaxe is an unlockable melee weapon that you must use in Hotline Miami, once unlocked it should spawn amongst the weapons that appear on the ground during the game.

To get into the sewers you will need to have the crowbar that you find near the start of the level, you must first complete the two floors of the level as normal, then proceed back downstairs when told to go to your car.
Make sure you have picked up the crowbar from the start of the chapter to open the manhole cover walk outside making sure you do not walk to near
to your car. Walk around to the left of the building, proceed down and then to the right you will come across a manhole cover hit to open it when standing nearby, go inside and collect the Jones mask next to the dying man.

Here is a video courtesy of Bonesickle Describing how to complete the level, it also includes the Jones Mask location and method of attainment.

Eye for Details
Collect all the puzzle pieces

There are sixteen pieces to the puzzle of Hotline Miami, one for each chapter of the game, you may find them during your playtime as small purple squares that are quite easy to miss, it is recommended to go back and collect pieces of the puzzle only after you have completed the chapter, certain chapters you will have to rush to get the puzzle piece before events trigger making it much more difficult to obtain however.

Collecting a piece of the puzzle and then dying will not count towards you picking up the piece, so if you continue through a chapter after picking a mask or puzzle piece up you will have to pick it up again later before completing the chapter otherwise you will not be awarded the mask/piece.

To unlock Eye For Details you must acquire every puzzle piece in the game.
Determining whether or not you have already picked up specific puzzle piece or mask check in the chapter select menu like so:

Guns for Show
Use all guns at least once

Hopefully this trophies unlocking issues have been fixed with the recent patch.

https://twitter.com/HotlineMiami/sta...90616115236864

The Guns for show trophy is unlocked by simply using all the firearms in Hotline Miami at least once, remember to complete the floor you are on for your usage/kill to count, then finish the chapter to be 100% sure your progression has counted.

Like with all the other trophies for performing particular tasks such as collecting puzzle pieces and masks in chapters, your progress will not save if you die after performing the action, as such finishing off the current chapter or floor you are on is always the best option.

The list of firearms that are required for this trophy are below:

Pump Action Shotgun. You have 6 rounds of ammunition instead of two like the double barrel shotgun, this is one of the most versatile guns in the game due to less required accuracy.

Double Barreled shotgun. You have 2 rounds of ammunition with this firearm, acts in the same way as the pump action with a slightly faster fire rate but less killing potential with only two shots.

Suppressed 9mm/Pistol. This gun has 13 rounds in the magazine it is guaranteed to be found found on Chapter eleven, as soon as you enter the doorway to the chapter a guard will always have one, also at the exit of the elevator on the second floor another bad guy will carry one.
Useful for clearing out enemies without being detected.

Assault Rifle
. The Assault rifle is found throughout the game and due to its frequency is something you should get used to using, this firearm holds 24 rounds it has has a moderate fire rate compared to some of the SMG's in the game which helps preserve ammunition as enemies will die quickly anyway.

Uzi. This weapon has 30 rounds of ammunition to begin with and has a high rate of fire, an Uzi should be found on chapter Six, Clean Hit laying on the table to the right on the ground floor of the chapter.
The police chief on the top floor of chapter thirteen, "Assault" carries two of these if you need to complete the trophy challenge. Not to be confused with the Suppressed Uzi detailed below.

Suppressed Uzi. This weapon has 30 rounds of ammunition to begin with and has a high rate of fire, you must have the Richter the Rat mask to use it, useful for clearing enemies without being detected.

MP5 SMG. This firearm is found on the chapter Six, "Clean Hit" it is located in the bottom right hand of the second floor of the chapter next to some plants and a puzzle piece, the gun is also found in the hands of boss enemies in various chapters.
32 rounds in a magazine.

Magnum Revolver. This revolver that holds 6 shots can be unlocked through the via chapter points progression system, it will then spawn throughout any chapters you play thereafter, slower fire rate than the 9mm but does generally only take one shot to take out enemies instead of 2-3.

Scorpion. This firearm holds 20 rounds of ammunition and has the fastest fire rate of any gun in the game, it is unlockable via chapter points progression system, it will spawn in chapter you play after that.
(actually known as the Skorpion in the real world)

Two Birds with One Stone
Hit two enemies with the same weapon in one throw

See, Plain Luck for information on how to earn both of these trophies at once, despite the description you must use a brick to get the two kills.

[top]
Cat Fight
Kill the panthers using Brandon the Panther

To earn the Cat Fight trophy, you must have unlocked the Brandon mask (Panther) See: Zookeeper for more information.

Equip the mask in chapter select and pick the Final chapter, "Showdown" you will be faced with two panthers after you clear the first floor of the level and go upstairs, simply pick up the trophy to your right, indicated with a red arrow and then stand next to the pillar and kill the two pet panthers that attack you.
One method of killing them is to stand right next to the left hand corner of the pillar and swipe at them as they get stuck on the side, otherwise you will die very quickly.
Another method is to not use the pillars at all, get the attention of one panther and walk backwards while swiping to take it out, the panther will pause with your first hit and moving backwards will give you time to repeat swing as it comes at you again, repeat for the second panther and the trophy is yours.
Note: The panthers will take two swipes of the trophy to take down.

Smell Something Burning
Kill the crapping gangster with a fireaxe

To earn the Smell Something Burning trophy, you must kill the enemy thug that is sitting on the toilet using the Fire Axe as melee weapon in chapter Six "Clean Hit."
Your goal is to reach the second floor of the building, clear out the rooms underneath then head to the elevator at the top of the screen.
Your target is generally always the last left alive in the chapter so completing this challenge is just a matter of finding the Fire axe.
Simply clear out the thugs in the rest of the chapter, so you are left free to take out the target. You can either grab the Fire axe which is located at the beginning of the second floor of the chapter, the Axe itself is held in a box near the elevator doors you get out of, on the right hand side of the hallway next to the second lot of plants growing in the hallway.
An easy method to locate the fire Axe if you are having trouble is to simply walk down the hall hugging the right wall as Jacket will pick up the fire Axe when he walks over the container that holds it.
To complete the trophy just proceed to the target in the lower left section of the floor and kill him with the axe in hand.

Here is a video courtesy of Bonesickle Describing how to complete the level, it also includes the location of the fireaxe and how-to for achieving this trophy.

Get a Life
Get A+ on all the chapters

    General tips section:

The easiest way to achieve A+ on the chapters is to first learn the layouts of the level so you can progress through performing all of your kills quickly and efficiently, this will add points across the board for boldness as you have not been counted as playing through, moving into exactly the same rooms seems to be detrimental to your boldness points but if you have just run through an area and kill everyone first go your score should be greatly improved.

Comboing together kills is a huge boost to your points and is recommended if you want to get A+ scores.
Learning the chapters back to front before going for the A+ run will help you know where and when enemies will appear without having to make use of the look feature, speeding up your overall chapter progression and giving bonus points for mobility and time bonus.

If you feel you have spent a lot of time on a chapter you can always reset it after you have completed and attempt it again using anything you have learned in previous attempts to help you on your next run through sometimes a fresh approach will earn you more points towards an A+ than simply repeating the same section of the chapter until you complete it.

Bat-man
Clear Chapter 2 using Nigel the Bat

To earn the Bat-man trophy in Hotline Miami you must clear chapter 2 of the game whilst wearing the Nigel mask, which is a Bat.

You must finish the game with the secret ending to unlock the Nigel mask so this cannot be completed until you have finished the game at least once.
Finishing the game with the secret ending involves collecting letters throughout the chapters to use at the end of the game to finish the puzzle.

Nigel's Bat mask will reverse your movement controls when worn.
This makes it much more difficult to control your way through the level as your mind is making you do what you normally would, strangely your aiming with the still works like normal.
Unlike the PC version of Hotline Miami, you can not simply reverse your controls and then begin the level with your reversed controls reversed back to normal to make it simple to finish.

A video By Bonesickle outlining one method to deal with this trophy.

Plain Luck
Hit three or more enemies with the same weapon in one throw

I just grabbed this off of the steam achievements for this game... for some reason it was left as is for the PSN version.

Kill three or more enemies with the same *Brick* in one throw
I used a glass bottle/can of beer and unlocked both the two and three kill version of this trophy, so it may still work with one of those.

To earn this trophy it is a matter of finding three enemies next to each other to kill with a brick, make sure you aren't using the hammer to get this trophy.

One simple method to achieve this is to play chapter Five, "Full House, check the four weapon spawns from outside of the building while using the Jake the snake mask for thrown weapon kills.
Once you find a brick in one of the four weapon spawns. (west and east rooms of the building) enter the building and clear out all of the bad guys, pick up the brick and proceed to the next floor.

Once you go up the stairs to the second floor, your brick will be saved in hand for all your next attempts. Drop the brick in this room and deal with the three bad guys below you, there will be one enemy in the bathroom and two further south make sure you take them out silently, knock out and execute the guy in the bathroom, and since you are using the Jake mask you can pick up his gun and throw it with to kill the two bad guys below.
Once you have dealt with these guys, backtrack and pick your brick back up head to the room to the east, you should see two stationary guards and two patrolling next to the guards.
Stand behind the door wait for all of these three to line up and throw hopefully taking all three out, wait a few seconds for the trophy to pop.
If you fail to kill three you hopefully got the two birds with one stone trophy, simply get killed and you will restart at the top of the stairs with the brick to attempt this again.
