[top]Tips & Strategies

There are certain areas that you cannot explore and power cells that you cannot get until you have turned on certain eco vents. There are two such vents in the world and pressing their switches opens up all the closed vents:
  • Blue Eco Vent: Can be found in the Forbidden Jungle Temple
  • Yellow Eco Vent: Can be found at the peak of Snowy Mountain near the Lurker Fortress hidden behind some pine trees.

Jak has many different moves that he can do in order to move about the world. Here are a few of the more necessary moves that I found to be the most helpful throughout my journey.
  • Roll Jump: Press while moving to roll and then to jump. This jump has the potential to be the fastest mode of transportation while walking and can help Jak get over most of the gaps in the game. The downside is that it is hard to change direction once you have started the jump.
  • High Jump: Press while standing still and then to high jump (with a split). This allows Jak to reach high ledges that he would not normally be able to reach.
  • Air Punch: Punch with and then press to jump and punch straight up into the air. This is rather helpful when you have an enemy hovering in the air just out of reach of your spin kick that is being annoying.

[top]Roadmap

  1. Part 1: Complete Story - Before trying to get all the collectables such as the Power Cells, Scout Flies, and Precursor Orbs, focus on just completing the game. Of course, you will need a minimum of 72 Power Cells in order to get through the Lava Tube, but that is all you need to complete the game. If you are worried about missing something early in the game and being unable to return later, don't fret, there are no sections in Jak and Daxter that you cannot return to at a later time. If you know you missed something, you can always return and get it later in the game.
  2. Part 2: Gather all Collectables - Once you have beaten Gol and Maia and saved the world (of course), you can go back and collect all the collectable items in each of the areas. Please note that there are about 4-5 Power Cells that do no show any hints as to how to obtain them (these are always referred to as 'Hidden Power Cell' when you get it). If you are having trouble finding any Scout Flies or Power Cells, please check out the appropriate section in the trophy guide for help.

Defeat the Dark Eco Plant

The battle against the Dark Eco Plant is pretty straightforward.

When you first start fighting the Dark Eco Plant, it will send out one little bug-like monster with spikes sticking out of it to start chasing you. Do not attack it until it withdraws the spikes back into its body. At the same time as as the bug is chasing you, the Dark Eco Plant will attack you by trying to eat you. Simply roll out of the way of the plant's mouth. Once the bug is dead, the plant will stop attacking you and allow you to jump up and hit it.

After the first hit on the plant, it will send out two bugs. Simply repeat what you did in the first stage again and do the same in the third stage when the Dark Eco Plant will send out three bugs. After hitting the plant three times, it will die, giving you a power cell and this trophy.

Connect the Eco Beams

When you first explore Sandover Village and speak to the mayor, he will mention that the series of lenses that bring Blue Eco to the town from the temple in the Forbidden Jungle have stopped working and that it is up to you to fix it. Of course, being the hero that he is, Jak decides to go and fix the mirrors.

In the Forbidden Jungle, you might eventually stumble upon a machine with some type of scaffolding on top of it. Destroying the scaffolding will stop the machine from working, free the Blue Eco beam being emitted from the temple, and also activate the first lens. Walk up to the lens and press to use it and position the beam towards the second lens. After connecting the beam to the lens, follow it and do the same thing at the second lens. Continue to follow and position the lens the correct way until you reach the lens on the beach at the beginning of the Forbidden Jungle. Fixing this one solves the Blue Eco energy problem, allowing you to return to the mayor for a power cell and this trophy.

Hand Over Fish
Catch 200 Pounds of Fish

In the first area of the Forbidden Jungle, when you reach the second wooden bridge with some parts missing, jump down to find the fisherman who will challenge you to a fishing contest.

When you first enter the Forbidden Jungle turn left and cross over the decaying wooden bridges and drop down to find a fisherman/pirate. Talk to him and he will challenge you to a fishing contest with the prize being a power cell.

In the contest, there are three different types of fish:
  • Green Fish: 1 Pound
  • Yellow Fish: 5 Pounds
  • Purple Eel: Game Over

You need to catch 200 pounds of fish in your net, but there are two rules. If you miss 20 total pounds of fish or you mistakenly catch a purple eel, it's game over and you have to start all over again.

When you first reach Sentinel Beach, you will notice a power cell on the sand with a pelican flying in circles over it. As you approach the power cell, the pelican will swoop down and swallow it before heading back to its nest. Continue down the beach and head towards the small island with the pelican and punch the bird once to make it throw up the power cell onto the far beach. As soon as you have control of Jak again, jump off the island and quickly make your way to where the power cell landed to retrieve it. If you are too slow the pelican will swallow the power cell again, forcing you to try again.

While the heat shield will protect you most of the time, the shield will only hold until 500 degrees, upon which the Zoomer (and you) will burst into flames and explode.

In order to avoid a fiery death, there are cooling balloons scattered throughout the canyon that will lower the temperature of the Zoomer by about ~5-10% of maximum.

In the Precursor Basin, there are 4-5 flying Lurkers in diapers that will start flying away from you as you approach them on the Zoomer. Cure Dark Eco Infected Plants

In the Precursor Basin while on the Zoomer, you may stumble upon a clearing of purple plants. These are the poisonous Dark Eco plants that the Green Sage wants you to cure. In order to do so, you need to drive the Zoomer over the Green Eco vent located nearby and then proceed to ‘run over’ the Dark Eco plants to cure them. Be careful and quick about it because if you leave the Dark Eco plants alive, they will start to spread into the areas that you have cured. Once you have cured every Dark Eco plant, a flower will appear and award you with a power cell and this trophy.

Protect Farthy's Snacks

He says that he can get it back, but you will have to defend the cupcakes/muffins that he placed out in the swamp from the swamp rats. If even one is taken, you will have to start all over again.

This minigame has three stages and in each one, you will have to use a constantly replenishing yellow eco vent to kill the swamp rats before they can reach the muffins. Unlike normal yellow eco, these blasts will only travel in a straight line and will not home in on an enemy. Once you have destroyed all the swamp rats in the three phases, the hillbilly congratulates you and gives you a power cell and this trophy.

In Foggy Swamp, there are four tethers keeping the zeppelin from floating away. When you destroy a tether, you get a power cell. If you explore every nook and cranny, you should easily find all four. In any case, here are the locations for the four tethers:
  1. Tether #1: The first tether is found fairly soon after entering the swamp. It can be found just before entering the first cave in Boggy Swamp and just past a set of extending spikes.
  2. Tether #2: The second tether is found after a series of platforms across the dangerous swamp water after exiting the cave.
  3. Tether #3: After breaking the second tether, you will notice a path next to a yellow eco vent that leads to the right. Take it and use the second jump pad (after the ledge with dark eco boxes on it) to reach the third tether.
  4. Tether #4: After helping (or not) the hillbilly find his pet, travel through the cave and exit out the other side. Continue past all the boxes of dark eco and Lurkers until you reach a yellow eco vent just before the last tether. Shoot it to get the final power cell and this shiny trophy.

De-Klawwed
Defeat Klaww

When you first enter Rock Village, you will see a giant Lurker throwing flaming chunks of rock down on the village. This half-machine, half-monster is Klaww and after an initial attempt by the local hero to defeat him, blocked off the path to the Mountain Pass. Once you have gathered enough power cells to power the Blue Sage's machine to lift the boulder blocking the pass, you can go and confront Klaww.

Much like the fight against the Dark Eco Plant, you have to 'hit' Klaww three times in order to defeat him. By 'hit' I mean make him hit himself. When you first jump down to confront Klaww, you will be on three platforms floating on a lake of lava (instant death). Klaww will notice you and wind up his mechanical hand and start throwing boulders at you. Jump from platform to platform to dodge the boulders. Once Klaww throws the last boulder, it will break and leave a blue eco cluster on the platform it hit. Pick it up to cause a Precursor bridge to form. Run down the bridge, avoiding the boulders that Klaww will roll toward you until you reach the yellow eco. Once you pick up the yellow eco, Klaww will start creating a large boulder above his head, shoot him with eco blasts to make him drop the boulder on his head. Once he does that, run back down the bridge to the initial three platforms.

Phases 2 and 3 are similar to the first phase except that Klaww will throw the boulders at you faster each time. The Precursor bridge will also lose segments every time you hit Klaww, leaving gaps that you will have to maneuver around or jump over. Once you cause Klaww to hit himself three times, the fight is over.

Destroy the Dark Eco Crystals

Inside of Spider Cave there are multiple purple dark eco crystals that you need to destroy. In order to do so, you can either shoot them with yellow eco, punch them, or simply walk up and touch them. The minute anything makes contact with a crystal, it starts a countdown before detonating. The crystals themselves are not hard to find and are usually out in the open. There are two exceptions to this however:
  • If you exit out the rear tunnel in the first large cave, you can see a dark eco crystal right in front of you on a ledge surrounded by a dark eco pool. Head to the right and go to the platform with the scout fly on it. Roll and jump across the smaller dark eco pool on the other side of the platform and dive into the water on the other side, the dark eco crystal is at the bottom.
  • Same as in the first hidden crystal. This one is hidden in a pool of water in the dark cave. You should see this pool when you are going to go and turn on one of the green glowing crystals.

It's Dark in Here
Survive the Lurker Infested Cave

Near the entrance to the Lurker Fort on Snowy Mountain are a series of wooden bridges that connect icy platforms together. To get to this area, face the entrance to the fort and head to the back-left corner outside of the fort. If you follow this path correctly, you should find a red eco vent just before entering a cave full of small lurkers and dark eco boxes. Attack the lurkers and make your way to the power cell above you. I found that the best attack to use was the spin attack since it knocked the lurkers into the dark eco boxes without damaging me.

[top]
It's Cold out Here
Stop the 3 Lurker Glacier Troops

On Snowy Mountain there three Lurkers in drilling/excavation machines digging into the ice. You can tell you are near one of them when you spot a red eco vent. In order to lure them off of their machines (where they are safe), you are going to have to power up with red eco and then kill a few lurkers around them to enrage them. When they jump off, you have to hit them twice while powered up to kill them.

Here are their approximate locations:
  • Head up the path with the boulders coming down at you and turn right at the top. Charge up with red eco and continue around the pass to find this glacier troop.
  • After heading through the ice cave and sliding over the frozen lake, power up with red eco and turn around the corner (not down the slide) to find this trooper.
  • The last glacier troop is located near the Lurker Fort. Instead of going inside, look down and drop to the level below the fort. Power up with red eco and enter the shallow cave to find the last glacier troop and a power cell.

Press the button to raise one of the tile puzzles and make your way across it. Through the door on the other side are a lot of lurkers that are being spawned by the three machines behind them. Make your way across the room until you reach a blue eco vent. Charge up and climb onto the blue eco platforms until you reach the ledge with the scout fly on it. The Final Battle Against Gol and Maia

Gol and Maia are the final two bosses in the game and they fight you together in a giant precursor robot that has been augmented with some of their own technology.

A hint for the fight: When the blue eco vent suddenly becomes active, run over it and use the jump pad to clear off of the fighting arena before the precursor robot fires a mine at the arena. If you are still on it when the mine hits, you will be killed.

1. Phase 1: When you reach the platform, the precursor robot will be focusing its efforts on opening the silo. Use the yellow eco scattered around to throw eco blasts at the head until the piece shooting the laser beam blows up.

2. Phase 2: In phase 2, the robot will shoot balls of green eco into the dark eco, causing monsters to form. Use (or don't use) the yellow eco to destroy the monsters and then use the blue eco vent to activate the launch pad.

3. Phase 3: The robot will use a cannon-like weapon on its right arm to shoot balls of red energy that eventually explode, causing a shockwave to ripple across the arena. Jump over the shockwaves and use the yellow eco to attack the arm until it explodes.

4. Phase 4: The robot will use its left arm weapon to shoot yellow eco blasts at you. Dodge them and return fire until it's destroyed.

5. Phase 5: Not really a phase, just dodge attacks until you can go pick up the white eco and win the battle.
