[top]Tips & Strategies

LUMINES Terminology
  • deletion or clear - a deletion, also called a clear, occurs when four blocks, of the same color, are combined to create a square, which then becomes cleared upon sweep of the plane
    - 4 blocks = 1 square
    - 4 like blocks = 1 solid square = 1 deletion = 1 clear
  • plane - when I say plane, I'm talking about the plane, or vertical axis, that moves across the screen, from left to right, in a "sweeping" motion. It is essentially just a y-axis in motion.
  • sweep - a sweep is referred to as a movement of the plane from the left-most point on the grid to the right-most point on the grid. One movement like such is 1 full sweep.

[top]
Basic 3
Unlock 3 Skins in Challenge Mode "Basic"

Hit start > select single player > the screen will automatically shift to challenge mode, at which point select "Basic" > and off you go. This will be your first trophy in the game, if you decide to start easy and work your way up. The first time I played this game I hardly made it to the third skin, which is where this trophy unlocks.

Start out slow. If you have never played Lumines before, you will need just play for a bit before you start recognizing specific patterns. If you fail, just try again. This game is no different than any other puzzle game, in the respect that you're gonna need to make mistakes in order to get better. Start experimenting with different combination of blocks(See Basic 10 for more tips on achieving both of these trophies)

[top]
Basic 10
Unlock 10 Skins in Challenge Mode "Basic"

You will need some practice for this one. Basically, you're going to want to have as little on the screen as possible, so you're going to have to learn good block management.

Specific tips/strategies:
  • The skins are dependent on your score, and your score is dependent on, essentially, two things: the amount of blocks cleared, and the multiplier.
    - The multiplier can be increased by achieving clears in between consecutive sweeps of the boards. Until you feel comfortable with quick-paced block placement I would avoid worrying about your multiplier (at least when you're first starting out) because it will just cause careless errors that can screw up your whole board.
  • You are awarded bonus points for "Single Color Bonus" and "All Erased Bonus" which can happen by the following:
    - a "Single Color Bonus" is achieved by having only one color of blocks on the screen at any given time. You can achieve this bonus an unlimited amount of times in a round of play, as long as you can perform its requirement. It is possible to get these fairly easy in the beginning of the round. Each one will give you 1,000 points, which is a nice little bonus.
    - an "All Erased Bonus" is achieved by erasing all blocks from the screen at a given time during play. It too can be achieved an unlimited amount of times in one round and is easiest at the very beginning, when few blocks are on the screen. These are each worth 10,000 points.
  • Scroll up to Basic strategies and tips for more on this.

[top]
Advance 10
Unlock 10 Skins in Challenge Mode "Advance"

This trophy is not that much harder than Basic 10. The same basic tips and strategies will apply. The only real noticeable difference between Challenge Mode Basic and Challenge Mode Advance is that for some skins the sweeping plane moves at a much slower pace. This means that you will need get better at maintaining a low level of blocks on the screen at any one time, because blocks are cleared from the screen much slower.

Specific tips/strategies: (see Specific tips/strategies for Basic 10, above)

[top]
Time Attack 50
Score 50 Points in Time Attack Mode 60sec.

Hit start > select single player > scroll over to Time Attack, and select 60sec.

This Time Attack is not too difficult with a little practice. You need to clear 50 squares (not to be confused with 50 blocks, which would make it much easier) within 1 minute.

The best thing to do is to just play it over and over. If you fail, hit and it will start over, so its easy to just continue trying. You will notice your scores getting better little by little. This part of the game became very addicting for me. It was always, "Okay, just one more round, then I'll stop" and would continue like that for a while. I think its because it is very easy to see your progress with continuous attempts and it becomes an individual challenge. The game is very fun if you just give it a chance.

You should acquire this one pretty quickly, though the same cannot be said for the Time Attack 210 trophy. I would start on that one as soon as Time Attack 50 is unlocked, so you're already "warmed up" for it.

Specific tips and strategies:
  • Avoid looking at the clock to see how much time is left. It will not only waste precious seconds, but will likely cause you to panic more and lose momentum.
  • See Basic strategies and tips, above, for more guidance.

Mission Beginner
Clear Mission Mode Easy

If you go for the Challenge Mode trophies before this one, you should have a really easy time completing each mission. They will ask you to do things like, erase X amount of blocks in X amount of seconds, clear all blocks X amount of steps (2 and 3 step missions for easy), achieve X amount of "single color bonus" in X amount of time. After earning the challenge trophies, I was able to do the easy missions in about 15 minutes and the hard missions in about 20. It is all just pattern recognition and once you recognize those patterns you will know exactly how to use them to clear blocks.

You do not need to do the missions in any specific order. The ones you have completed will be accompanied by a little check next to its mission number. If you can't finish one, move on and go back later.

*Puzzles and missions will be explained further in the LUMINES Supernova Puzzle/Mission Mode Visual Guide, that other ps3trophies member, Kruasa, is generously putting together. Keep in mind that some puzzles/missions are quite difficult to diagram, let alone complete, so they will continue to be added in over time. Please be patient.

Puzzle Beginner
Clear Puzzle Mode Easy

Puzzle Mode was intimidating until I figured out a nearly fail-safe strategy for completing them. The method was quite tedious but thoroughly satisfying. See spoiler below for directions on how to make puzzles significantly easier for yourself.

Time Attack 210
Score 210 points in Time Attack Mode 180sec.

This time attack trophy is much more difficult than Time Attack 50. You need over 4 times as many clears in only double the amount of time. I have estimated that the sweep takes about 3 seconds to cross from one end of the screen to the next. 180 seconds divided by 3 seconds equals 60. 210 points divided by 60 sweeps is 3.5, so figure you need to clear almost 4 full squares between every sweep for the entire round. This will not come easily, unless you are a LUMINES veteran. I played Time Attack 180sec for about 20-30min a day for a week before I was able to achieve this (just for some perspective on it).

Specific tips and strategies:
  • You need to work very quickly on this one. It is hard to get more than a couple clears with the very first sweep so you will need to work extra hard to make up for it.
  • More time on the clock means more time to potentially screw up. Just be patient, you'll notice your scores improving if you play consistently, trust me. I couldn't break the 190 pt barrier for a while. The time I actually got the trophy my score was 222. You'll know when you're getting better at it.
  • Remember, keep your eyes on the board and off the clock. You do not have a second to waste
  • The Basic strategies and tips section won't really help you here, you simply need to play in order to get better and faster.
  • Challenge yourself. I know that might sound stupid but it will help. If you break one of your high scores...play another round to try to do even better. Its easier once you're all psyched up for it already.

Dig Down Master
Clear all Stages in Dig Down Mode

Dig Down Mode consists of 20 levels. On each level you will have a set amount of time to clear all blocks from at least rows on the screen. The two cleared rows can be right next to each other or at completely opposite ends of the grid, it doesn't matter. Clearing all 20 stages is quite difficult and will probably take several attempts. I couldn't get past level 12 for the longest time. Once I finally did, I got significantly better at clearing blocks and rows and hit level 20 soon after. When you do finally make it to level 20, if you're anything like me, your heart will be pounding and your pulse will be racing from the realization that you still have to beat level 20 in order to unlock the trophy. So calm down and take it easy, its just a game, and if you do fail, it doesn't take long to restart and hit 20 again.

Specific tips:
  • I strongly recommend following the detailed Road Map to 100% at the beginning of this guide, but you can also give this mode a try in between your other modes/trophies. Challenge, Time Attack, and, in particular, Mission Modes will help give you the essential strategies and "survival" tactics that will help see you through Dig Down.
  • You're going to want to make good use of the "special blocks". These are the blocks that have a small cross on them. They saved my ass many times in higher levels, and are extremely useful in almost all game modes. Basically, they can potentially make you or break you if you find yourself in a tight situation. Below I've attempted to explain what they do and how to use them.

    keep in mind:
    ( 1 square = 4 blocks) (1 solid colored square = 1 deletion)

Lets say, for example, a square begins to drop, and one of the four blocks in that square, an orange block, has a cross on it. If you use that block to complete a solid orange square, all blocks of the same color that are horizontally or vertically adjacent to that square, as well as all same color blocks horizontally and vertically adjacent to those blocks, will become highlighted and deleted on the next sweep. Scroll up to Basic strategies and tips for a visual explanation.

Mission Master
Clear Mission Mode Hard

You must first complete all easy missions before the hard ones will become available to you.

If you go for the Challenge Mode trophies before this one, you should have a really easy time completing each mission. The hard missions are not that much harder than the easy missions. They will ask you to do things like, erase X amount of blocks in X amount of seconds, clear all blocks X amount of steps (2 and 3 step missions for easy), achieve X amount of "single color bonus" in X amount of time. After earning the challenge trophies, I was able to do these in about 20 minutes. With a little experience, you should be able to power right through them. It is all just pattern recognition and once you recognize those patterns you will know exactly how to use them to clear blocks.

You do not need to do the missions in any specific order. The ones you have completed will be accompanied by a little check next to its mission number. If you can't finish one, move on and go back later

Puzzle Master
Clear Puzzle Mode Hard

In order to unlock the hard puzzles you must first conquer all of the easy ones.

Again, the puzzles can be difficult, but with a visual aid they become significantly easier. The hard puzzles are not that much worse than the easy ones. There are a few that will require you to lay your last few blocks quickly, before the plane clears away half your puzzle. You will know what I mean when you see them in the select screen. A Puzzle Guide is in the works, and will contain more info on these. If you wish to sketch them on your own click the spoiler.

Skin Master
Unlock all Skins

This will, more than likely, be the last trophy you obtain. There are 51 skins total, not including skins from the Classic and Holiday dlc packs. You need to unlock all 51 for this trophy. These can be acquired as noted below:
  • Challenge Mode
    - 20 skins from Basic (requirement: complete a 20 skin cycle, you just need to make it to the 20th skin. follow same tips stated for Basic 3, Basic 10, and Advance 10 trophies)
    - 20 skins from Advance (requirement: same as above requirement)
  • Puzzle Mode
    - easy (requirement: complete all easy puzzles)
    - hard (requirement: complete all hard puzzles)
    - super hard (requirement: complete all super hard puzzles) super hard puzzles become available after all hard puzzles are completed
  • Mission Mode
    - easy (requirement: complete all easy missions)
    - hard (requirement: complete all hard missions)
    - super hard (requirement: complete all super hard puzzles) super hard missions become available after all hard missions are completed

*The consensus is that you acquire 5 skins through Puzzle Mode and 5 skins through Mission Mode. Upon acquiring all 10 of those, the last 1 is unlocked. Totaling 51 skins for all modes stated above. This trophy is going to take some time to achieve. Mainly because some of the super hard puzzles can be quite difficult.

note: There has been problems with a couple of the super hard puzzles being glitchy. The Cyclist puzzle is the main one to watch out for. I personally, did not have a problem with that one, however, if you do, type in "Lumines supernova enter name of puzzle here" into google and you will find a solution to the problem.
