[top]Introduction

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 Expansion 1 adds three new decks to the game while also allowing you to play as the Archenemy for the first time. While playing as the Archenemy, you'll face off versus three opponents at once with double the starting health along with having the benefit of using the scheme cards. The three opponents can be either computer AI, online multiplayer, or a mixture of the two. Also, there are four new cards to unlock for the ten original decks.

Featuring 13 unique decks, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 also lets you customize those decks. As you progress in the game, you can enhance your deck by swapping in new, unlockable cards. However, unlike the previous game, this time around you can remove any card in your deck as long as you still meet the 60 card requirement.

[top]Tips and Strategies

  • The biggest and probably most useful tip or strategy to use while playing the game is to take advantage of the button which stops the timer. Do this whenever someone plays a card you're not familiar with and read the description. This leads to point number 2.

  • Use the button to zoom in on a specific card and read its ability. This often goes hand in hand with the first tip. Once you press to stop the timer, select the card and then press to zoom in and read its ability.

  • Don't be afraid to mulligan. If you start off with a bad hand, mulligan and draw a new one hoping it ends up being better. However, if you have to mulligan several times in a row its better off just restarting the duel.

  • Always try to act last in each altercation. The chance to go last means that your spell/ability will resolve before the spells/abilities that are already being played. This is known as FILO (First in, Last Out) and using this to your advantage will make many of the more difficult tasks easier.

[top]Roadmap

Step 1: Unlock the three new decks and win a single match with each of them.

First defeat Liliana Vess to unlock her Grave Whispers deck so that you can then move onto Ajani Goldmane and Ral Zarek. Once you unlock her deck, use it to defeat Ajani Goldmane and unlock his Auramancer deck. Then switch to Ajani Goldmane and defeat Ral Zarek to unlock his Cloudburst deck. Finally, switch to Ral Zarek and win a game to unlock the last trophy associated with winning a game with the new decks.

Doing so will unlock the Necromancer, Auramancer, and Tempest trophies.

Step 2: Host an Archenemy game and earn three wins.

Once you start the game, select Multiplayer, then Create Match, and then finally select the Archenemy setting. Next select to Play as the Archenemy. You will need at least one person to join the game to unlock the Your Puny Minds Cannot Fathom trophy. The other two slots can be filled by using the computer AI. Once the games starts, the trophy will unlock. You don't even need to win the game or play it all the way to the end. However, doing so will help you progress towards the Your Fate is Thrice Sealed trophy provided you win the match.

Step 3: Play through the campaign and defeat Jace, Jace, and Jace as the Archenemy.

The last match you have to play as the Archenemy during the campagin is against Jace, Jace, and Jace. Once you win the match you'll unlock the My Crushing Masterstroke trophy.

Your Puny Minds Cannot Fathom
Host a match online as the Archenemy

Once you start the game, select Multiplayer, then Create Game, and finally select the Archenemy setting. Next select to Play as the Archenemy. You will need at least one person to join the game. The other two slots can be filled by using the computer AI. Once the games starts, the trophy will unlock. You don't even need to win or finish the game.

Your Fate is Thrice Sealed
Win three Archenemy matches online

Just like Your Puny Minds Cannot Fathom, you have to start the game and select Multiplayer, then Create Match, and finally select the Archenemy setting. Next select Play as the Archenemy. You will need at least one person to join the game and the other two spots can be filled with the computer AI. Simply win three games and you'll unlock this trophy. To make this easier, you can post in the Oficial Magic 2012 Boosting Thread to try and find someone to help you with it.

Here is a tip from Helyx

When you find a boosting partner, select a good burn deck such as Chandra Nalaar's Unquenchable Fire. Then let your boosting partner host the game as the Archenemy and fill the other two spots as the computer AI. Once the game starts, use your burn cards to target the computer AI's creatures and health directly so that your boosting partner can quickly win the game. Now all you have to do is repeat this two more times for the trophy. Finally, after this, switch roles so that the you're now the Archenemy and your partner is helping you to quickly win while using the burn deck.

My Crushing Masterstroke
Defeat Jace, Jace and Jace as the Archenemy in a campaign game

For this trophy, the staff over at Wizards of the Coast must have recognized how broken the tactic of using three copies of Jace Beleren's Realm of Illusion deck had become during an Archenemy game and decided to punish everyone by making it the last match in the campaign.

The reason why I say this is a broken tactic is because of the way you're quickly able to build up a huge Krovikan Mist, or even several of them. Jace's deck relies heavily on Illusion type creatures which work to boost Krovikan Mist. When you have three decks playing Illusion creatures, its easy to see how this one card can quickly become a juggernaut.

To win this match and unlock the trophy, I used Liliana Vess and her Grave Whispers deck. The deck relies heavily on making your opponent discard their cards by playing cards like Liliana's Specter, Guul Draz Specter, and Mind Rot. If you're lucky enough to also get Liliana's Caress into play, you'll cause each opponent to lose two life for every card they discard. Finally, by having the advantage of the scheme cards, you might end up getting lucky early on and activating Surrender Your Thoughts. All of this will help you to maintain card control and prevent the three Jace's from getting off many spells and hopefully a powerful Krovikan Mist.

Tempest
Win a game with Ral's deck

Ral Zarek is the third opponent you face in the Expansion 1 DLC single player campaign. Once you defeat him, you'll unlock his Cloudburst deck. To unlock the trophy you need to win any game type using his deck other than the challenges.

He uses a blue/red deck that relies heavily on creatures with haste/trample that must be sacrificed at the end of the turn as well as flying ones. Creatures like Arc Runner, Ball Lightning, and Spark Elemental can be used to dish out some good damage early on. By doing so, you'll make things a lot easier for when you play your creatures like Air Servant, Stormcloud Djinn, and Wind Drake.

Finally, you can use cards like Shock, Into the Roil, Ęther Tradewinds, and Sparkmage Apprentice to help control your opponents creatures. By doing all of this, you should be able to get the win.

Auramancer
Win a game with Ajani's deck

Ajani Goldmane is the second opponent you face in the Expansion 1 DLC single player campaign. Once you defeat him, you'll unlock his Auramancer deck. To unlock the trophy you need to win any game type using his deck other than the challenges.

He uses a white/green deck that relies heavily on Aura Enchantments. The deck itself is pretty slow starting off, but once you get cards like Mesa Enchantress, Aura Gnarlid, and Bramble Elemental out, you can then turn the tide of the game when you start playing your Aura Enchantments.

A good combination to use is to play Fists of Ironwood on your Bramble Elemental. This activates both abilities giving you four 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens instead of just the two from the Fists of Ironwood card. This also helps to boost Aura Gnarlid as well, giving him +1/+1 for every Aura on the battlefield. Finally, if you're lucky enough to have Mesa Enchantress in play while using the Aura Enchantments, you'll have the added benefit of drawing a card for each one played. This helps you maintain card control which is extremely useful when trying to win with this deck.

Necromancer
Win a game with Liliana's deck

Liliana Vess is the first opponent you face in the Expansion 1 DLC single player campagin. Once you defeat her, you'll unlock her Grave Whispers deck. To unlock the trophy you need to win any game type using her deck other than the challenges.

The deck is mono black and relies heavily on flying creatures along with spells that make you discard your cards such as Guul Draz Specter, Liliana's Specter, and Mind Rot. It also offers several spells that can be used to deal damage to your opponents creatures or health directly including Consume Spirit, Doom Blade, and Marsh Casualties.

The best way to win using this deck is to get out Liliana's Caress or Underworld Dreams early on and then play creatures like Guul Draz Specter and Liliana's Specter. You can then use cards like Consume Spirit, Doom Blade, and Marsh Casualties to kill off your opponents creatures during the mid game. You'll want to do this so that towards the late stages of the game you'll finally be able to play your heavy hitters like Grave Titan and Bloodgift Demon.
