[top]Tips & Strategies
- Trophies are listed in XMB order.
- The biggest and probably most useful tip or strategy to use while playing the game is to take advantage of the
button which stops the timer. Do this whenever someone plays a card you're not familiar with and read the description. This leads to point number 2.
- Use the
button to zoom in on a specific card and read its ability. This often goes hand in hand with the first tip. Once you press
to stop the timer, select the card and then press
to zoom in and read its ability.
- Don't be afraid to mulligan (see spoiler below for definition). If you start off with a bad hand, mulligan and draw a new one hoping it ends up being better. However, if you have to mulligan several times in a row its better off just restarting the duel.
- Always try to act last in each altercation. The chance to go last means that your spell/ability will resolve before the spells/abilities that are already being played. This is known as FILO (First in, Last Out) and using this to your advantage will make many of the more difficult tasks easier.

A mulligan, taken from the golf term, is a means of balancing out bad draws for your opening hand. The most common type of Mulligan these days is the 'Paris Mulligan', and it is the only legally supported method for sanctioned tournaments. When you draw your starting hand, you are free to shuffle it back into your deck if you are dissatisfied with it. Each time you reject your hand, you shuffle those cards back into your library and draw one less than you had before. This means that you can actually mulligan down to 0 cards, although this is inadvisable.
In the Two-Headed Giant format, each player may take a 'free' mulligan, meaning that they may draw a new hand of 7 cards. Subsequent mulligans after this, however, require one less card to be drawn each time, as normal.
Strategically, people tend to mulligan if your hand contains 0, 1, 6, or 7 lands. Too few lands means that you won't be able to play your spells, and too many means you won't have much to play in the first few turns. The cost for your spells is also an important factor to consider when performing a mulligan, as a card that costs 2 colored mana can probably not be played by turn 2 unless you have those two lands in your hand, and too many high-cost cards means you won't have much of an opening presence. If your deck's mana curve focuses more on 2 than 3 or higher, it may be worth the risk to accept a 1-land hand, but even that can be a risky proposition should you not get the second land when you need it. You'll also need to be more aggressive with your mulligans when you are taking the first turn, because you won't have as much time to get the lands you need.

Win a duel controlling at least five Auras
The best deck to use when going for this trophy is the Aura Servants deck which must first be unlocked by defeating Azorius in the Expansion Campaign. Also, to make earning the trophy even easier, you can win against one of the Encounter challenges from the regular campaign instead of a Planeswalker match.
With the Aura Servant deck, you'll easily come across enough Aura Enchantment cards to have the five minimum that's required for the trophy. Once the duel starts, simply play your Aura Enchantment cards on creatures like Invisible Stalker or Kor Spiritdancer which will either be unblockable or get buffed to be become very big very fast.

The best deck to use when going for this trophy is the Collective Might deck which must be first be unlocked by defeating Selesnya in the Expansion Campaign. Also, to make earning the trophy even easier, you can win against one of the Encounter challenges from the regular campaign instead of a Planeswalker match.
Because this deck focuses mainly on getting creature tokens onto the battlefield, you should have no problem controlling more than 20 creatures as tokens also count towards your total. By playing cards like Selesnya Evangel, Nemata, Grove Guardian, Sprout, and Jade Mage with Parallel Lives in play you'll quickly reach 20 creatures.

Win a duel with exactly 1 life
The best deck to use when going for this trophy is Chandra's Born of Flame deck. Also, to make earning the trophy even easier, you can win against one of the Encounter challenges from the regular campaign instead of a Planeswalker match. Once you start the match, make sure that you have Simple Targeting turned off in the options menu. By doing so, you'll be able to target yourself and creatures you control with your own spells and abilities. Thus enabling you to do direct damage to your own life total, bringing yourself down to one much more quickly.
If you can get Prodigal Pyromancer out early, you'll make unlocking the trophy very easy, especially if you're playing against one of the earlier and easier Encounter challenges. Other cards to look out for include Searing Spear, Flames of the Firebrand, and Chandra's Outrage.
